Class of Advanced Relationship Types for Alternative Versions

This class relates two releases or two tracks that are the same music. This might be because they are the same recording, or because they are the same songs recorded by different artists.

Remixes are dealt with in a separate RemixRelationshipClass, compilations in a separate CompilationRelationshipClass. Composition and Arrangement are related to these questions but are dealt with separately in the CompositionRelationshipClass.

Advanced Relationship Types

There are several AdvancedRelationshipTypes in this class:

• SameTrackRelationshipType:

  • track is the earliest release of track

    • Indicates that two tracks are absolutely identical: No remastering has been applied and the track length is the same.

• EarliestReleaseRelationshipType:

  • release is the earliest release of release

    • Indicates that two releases contain mostly the same audio material. This means that the audio data is exactly identical. No remastering has been applied, but it is ok if e.g. a bonus track was added or the order of the tracks was changed. Please take care to always point to the first version ever released!

• RemasterRelationshipType:

  • release/track is a remaster of release/track

    • Indicates that an release or track is a remaster of another work. This means that the audio data was changed in this process but the same original recording material was used. Please take care to always point to the first version ever released!

• OtherVersionRelationshipType:

  • track is the earliest version of track

    • Indicates another version of the same song by the same artist. This is the case when the same artist made a different recording of the same song. Please take care to always point to the first version of that song ever released!

• CoverRelationshipType:

  • release/track is a cover of release/track

    • Indicates a cover version of a track. This means that another artist performed the same song. Please see CoverRelationshipType and WhatIsACover for more details.

• TranslationTransliterationRelationshipType:

  • release is the original language/script track listing of release

    • Indicates that an album has translated or transliterated titles on another album release. This relationship does not indicate a cover where the lyrics have been translated (that should be indicated with "cover" instead, although both relationships could apply). It refers only to the track titles of the two releases.

How does same track/remaster compare to the ISRC spec, which allows for the addition or removal of silence while remaining an 'identical' track? While on the subject of ISRCs, would adding ISRC/MCN data be a useful thing to do? AnswerMe, please. --MartinRudat
