Creative Commons is a not-for-profit organization devoted to expanding the range of creative work available for others to legally build upon and share.
MusicBrainz uses a Creative Commons non-commercial share-and-share-alike license 
for derived data (mainly search indexes), moderation data (moderators, moderations/notes/votes, statistics) and the artist-to-artist relationships (Similar artists, not AdvancedRelationships) (artist_relation) (Data provided by Agent Arts)
The core data (artists, albums, tracks, etc.) is in the Public Domain.
