You can easily link from a Wikipedia article to the corresponding [[MusicBrainz]] entry if you know its ID. See [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Linking_to_databases http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Linking_to_databases] for a full description. This is how the link is created within the article text in Wikisyntax: |

Linking Wikipedia and MusicBrainz together
Oops, this page was a duplicate of WikipediaAndMusicBrainz. The cluster of WikiPedia (missing) WikipediaAndMusicBrainz and LinkWikipediaAndMusicBrainz has been restructured.
Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia Wiki in multiple languages that is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License. It contains many articles on bands and other artists. This is a short draft describing the possible collaboration between MusicBrainz and Wikipedia.
Linking from MusicBrainz to WikiPedia
You can use the WikipediaRelationshipType to add an AdvancedRelationship (AR) between an artist or album and their Wikipedia url.
Thoughts
Once there are enough Wikipedia articles linking to MusicBrainz, a link from MusicBrainz database entries to Wikipedia articles in different languages could be added. A list of each article with a link to MusicBrainz is available here:
http://de.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Spezial:Whatlinkshere&target=Vorlage%3AMusicbrainz
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Special:Whatlinkshere&target=Template%3AMusicbrainz
You can export each article with MediaWiki's XML-export function and parse the template link to get the coresponding MusicBrainz ID.
Discussion
- Can you create a simple list of all artists and their permanent link URL? We could add links from Wikipedia to MusicBrainz much more easily this way!
- Is it ok to use this icon: File:Musicbrainz.png under GFDL?
ABBA; artist/d87e52c5-bb8d-4da8-b941-9f4928627dc8.html .. ... ZZ TOP; artist/a81259a0-a2f5-464b-866e-71220f2739f1.html
You can leave me a comment at my Wikipedia user page: http://de.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Benutzer_Diskussion:JakobVoss&action=edit§ion=new
Linking from Wikipedia to MusicBrainz
Linking from the English Wikipedia to MusicBrainz
At the English Wikipedia, use the templates
- Template:Musicbrainz artist,
- Template:Musicbrainz album,
- Template:Musicbrainz track (link to the earliest release),
to link to MusicBrainz objects, and
- Template:Musicbrainz wiki -- good for the references/external links section --,
- MusicBrainz:PAGENAME -- better to use in the middle of a sentence --,
to link to the MusicbrainzWiki, where the ALLCAPSWORDS are arguments.
Linking from the German Wikipedia to MusicBrainz
Unfortunatly the German Wikipedia changed its template and currently only artists can be linked and only with the Row ID. Don't ask why, its simply stupid. You can help discussing about this at http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vorlage_Diskussion:Musicbrainz. So if you want to link to a MsuicBrainz artist page in Wikipedia use the following code in the article:
{{musicbrainz|ROWID}}
See http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABBA#Weblinks for an example.
