Some thoughts for adding Podcasts into MB:
Questions
Who is the artist of a podcast?
the good thing is: there is no such thing as an artist in a podcast. there are:
- people who moderate
- people who talk
- people who perform music
- people who do things that may be artistic
but a podcast itself is not an artwork. so we only must question how we fill the ID3-tag 'Artist'. id3 doesn't specify a tag for "Moderator" and most media-player software only use(needs) the artist field --akirom
Should the moderator be the artist or connected through relationships?
Possible structure
- a podcast has a url
- a podcast usually has an internal number (this should be handled like a catalogue number, some podcasts have their own logic)
- a podcast title may have an abbreviation for example "CR" for "Chaosradio" and "TWiT" for "This Week in Tech"
- each podcast issue has a release date.
Possible relationships
- artist was interviewed in podcast {at timestamp}
- track is played in podcast {at timestamp} {in background}
- podcast at timestamp refers to url
- podcast_1 at timestamp refers to podcast_2 at timestamp
Possible features
Cue sheets
A few rare podcast series come with .cue sheets for each episode, e.g. the Bitjam podcast. Because they come with a .cue sheet, it makes sense to have a tracklist for a podcast. An example in the database is this Bitjam episode: http://musicbrainz.org/release/f705c5b2-c3dc-4c2f-88e6-9c4657b329f6.html --warp.
- Another example is Armin van Buuren's A State of Trance podcast. The podcast is bootlegged as one single recording, but because the tracklist is listed online each week we also have another release in the group that contains a proper traditional tracklist.
Import from RSS feed
most podcasts are available through RSS. It could be usefull to simply import the titles, releasedates topics and urls from rss feeds--88.72.236.161 11:25, 6 December 2009 (UTC)
- I like this idea, a 'podcast_bot' user could be created and tasked with importing from an rss feed. Perhaps the rss entries could then end up in a holding area (like CD Stubs) where editors could add them one by one to ensure proper guideline usage. Also an additional edit type could be created to handle users adding feed urls (or updating them) to the bot. --navap 15:52, 6 December 2009 (UTC)
