This is a CSG Standard page giving appropriate ReleaseTitle and TrackTitle strings for the works of composer Vincenzo Bellini, which conform to the Classical Style Guide. It also contains hints which can help you create Advanced Relationships for a Release and its Tracks in MusicBrainz.

Draft: this is an early draft of this page. There are probably errors here. Please feel free to make corrections here (be bold, please), or start a discussion on the Talk page.

Operas

Opera ReleaseTitles should follow Classical Release Title Style. Below we give a template for the ReleaseTitle, but you need to fill in the FeaturingArtist part. Usually this is the name of the orchestra and chorus, "feat. conductor:" the conductor. Normally the singers aren't included in the FeaturingArtist, but for iconic singers in a Release it might make sense to.

Opera TrackTitles should follow OperaTrackStyle. Below we give TrackTitle strings for each scene or number of the opera. You need to check which scene(s) each Track of your Release includes; it may have different granularity than we do here.

The ReleaseArtist and TrackArtist should be set to the composer.

It's very helpful to apply Advanced Relationships to each track of opera Releases. We give reminders of which scenes involve which Artists. As a general rule, apply the Conductor, Composer, Librettist, and Orchestra Artists to every track in the Opera. Apply Singer, Chorus, and Chorus Director Artists to the tracks corresponding to the scenes where they appear, as marked by the abbreviations at the start of each row.

Norma

ReleaseTitle: Norma (FeaturingArtist) (disc k). e.g. Norma (Chorus and Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala feat. soprano: Maria Callas, conductor: Tullio Serafin) (disc 2). (N.B. normally singers don't get included in FeaturingArtist for operas, but in this case Callas's performance is so iconic, her name is likely more meaningful to a MusicBrainz listener than the conductor's.)

ReleaseArtist: Vincenzo Bellini

AdvancedRelationships: For all tracks of the opera, link these Artists:

  • Vincenzo Bellini composed (track) (composition years: blank-1831)
  • Felice Romani wrote the libretto for (track) (composition years: blank-1831)
  • (fill in your symphony) performed orchestra (track) (performance dates: fill in first and last dates of recording sessions, if known)
  • (fill in your conductor) conducted (track) (performance dates: fill in first and last dates of recording sessions, if known)

Vocal parts: Here is a list of each vocal part, with abbreviations. Below that is a table giving track titles, and which vocal performers appear in each segment. For each track where an artist appears, link the Artist as follows:

  • (fill in your artist) sang vocal (fill in the voice type) on (track) (performance dates: fill in first and last dates of recording sessions, if known)
Abbrev. Character Voice type
P Pollione Tenor
O Oroveso Bass
N Norma Soprano
A Adalgisa Soprano
Cl Clotilde Mezzosoprano
F Flavio Tenor
Co Chorus Chorus

TrackTitles: The first columns indicate which vocal performer appears in each scene, according to the musical score. Follow these first columns when assigning ARs to tracks. The rows here are fairly fine-grained.

Your Release may have one track which includes multiple rows of the table. Also, if your Release uses different wording for the music type (before the quotes) and within the quotes, you can use that instead. Some Release liners divide the acts into Scenes, but the vocal score does not. It divides each act into seven parts, e.g. "Scena e Cavatina".
