[[Sort Name|Sort Names]] are designed to make it easier to find a particular [[Artist]], [[Label]], or [[Work]] when they are presented in a list, by providing consistant rules for how the names are sorted. The sort name should work similarly to looking up an item in a phonebook or on a library or store shelf.

== Artist and Label Sort Names ==

Because the Artist and Label sort name fields do not allow you to specify the language, you must [[Style/Language/Transliterations|transliterate]] the name into Latin script before applying any of the following transformation rules. This does not apply to sort names on [[Alias|Aliases]]; they should be in the original script or the script specified by any language-specific rules that apply.

== Guidelines ==

=== Language-specific rules ===

Some languages have additional rules for sort names that clarify or override the general rules presented here.
==Description==

An "[[Artist|artist]]" is usually either a person or a group of persons. While artists in MusicBrainz are (mainly) the people responsible for creating music, they are also used in many different [[Advanced Relationships|AdvancedRelationships]], and in that context they can fulfill all kinds of roles, from producers, publishers, lyricists, conductors and many more.

To distinguish the different kinds of artists, there are different types available.
;Person
:This indicates an individual person.

;Group
:This indicates a group of people that may or may not have a distinctive name.

;Character
:This indicates an individual fictional character.

;Other
:This type should be used if none of the above types "Person", "Group", or "Character" fit.

;Unknown
:This is to be used when the type of the artist is yet to be found.

==Additional information and examples==

Note that for the same person, there may be several different artist entries in the database, with different [[Artist Name|artist names]] - this usually happens when a person uses different [[Performance Name|performance names]]:
* [[Artist:cb661251-3bc2-4373-bd7c-4b1531275c4c|Kieran Hebden]] (of type person) performs as [[Artist:3bcff06f-675a-451f-9075-99e8657047e8|Four Tet]] (of type person)

The members of a group are indicated with the [[rt:5be4c609-9afa-4ea0-910b-12ffb71e3821|member of band relationship type]], if the group represents a band, and the participants of a short-term collaboration are indicated with the [[rt:75c09861-6857-4ec0-9729-84eefde7fc86|collaboration relationship type]]:
* [[Artist:300c4c73-33ac-4255-9d57-4e32627f5e13|Ringo Starr]] (of type person) was a member of [[Artist:b10bbbfc-cf9e-42e0-be17-e2c3e1d2600d|The Beatles]] (of type group)
* [[Artist:cb661251-3bc2-4373-bd7c-4b1531275c4c|Kieran Hebden]] (of type person) collaborated on [[Artist:acef318f-bdd4-485d-b7e9-313e58e646fa|Kieran Hebden & Steve Reid]] (of type group)

In the case of a collaboration, the "members" can also be other groups. See for example:
* [[artist:0ecaa896-58fa-4dca-b53d-8da7bc5f59c5|Band Aid]] (of type group)
* [[artist:25f54bb7-c393-44e4-8e26-e4f4cd7aa61c|Queen & David Bowie]] (of type group)

The type of an artist can be modified by using the "Edit artist" link.

Finally, note that [[Special Purpose Artist|special purpose artists]] ([[Various Artists]], [[Unknown Artist]], [[No Artist]], etc.), being neither groups or persons, are of type "other".
Nikkihttps://wiki.musicbrainz.org/index.php?title=User:Kepstin/STYLE-227/Artist&diff=69191User:Kepstin/STYLE-227/Artist2015-06-06T04:21:06Z
Nikki:

An artist is generally a musician, group of musicians, a collaboration of multiple musicians or other music professional contributing to the works described in the [[MusicBrainz Database]]. In other words, artists are ''usually'' people who sing or play instruments.

Special cases include [[Fictitious Artist|fictitious artists]], [[Style/Unknown and untitled/Special purpose artist|special purpose artists]] and miscellaneous people such as graphic designers or illustrators that are added to the database an an "artist" in order to credit them for their work.

== Examples ==
* [[artist:cc197bad-dc9c-440d-a5b5-d52ba2e14234|Coldplay]]
* [[artist:53b106e7-0cc6-42cc-ac95-ed8d30a3a98e|John Williams]] (soundtrack composer & conductor)
* [[artist:8b8a38a9-a290-4560-84f6-3d4466e8d791|John Williams]] (classical guitar player)
* [[artist:83d91898-7763-47d7-b03b-b92132375c47|Pink Floyd]]
* [[artist:593abf14-4292-4d62-b365-79c7674cd1a5|Randy Jackson]] (brother of Michael and Janet.)
* [[artist:39828c81-cc39-4e8a-8e00-f0874c657d47|Randy Jackson]] (former bassist with Journey and American Idol Judge)

== Style guidelines ==
Please see the [[Style/Artist|guidelines for artists]].

== Artist properties ==

=== Name ===
The [[Artist/Name|artist name]] is the official name of an artist, be it a person or a band. In most cases it's the name as found on the liner.

For people, the name can either be a legal name or a performance name. When both are in the database, they can be linked together using the [[rt:dd9886f2-1dfe-4270-97db-283f6839a666|performance name relationship]].

;Legal name
:A legal name is the name of a person as used in official situations such as government dealings. This is usually the name which would be found on a birth certificate, although legal names can be changed, e.g. through marriage or by deed poll. Bands do not have legal names.

;Performance name
:A performance name is an alias used by a person for marketing or other reasons. A person may use several performance names and may also release material under their legal name.

=== Sort name ===
The sort name is a variant of the artist name which would be used when sorting artists by name, such as in record shops or libraries. Among other things, sort names help to ensure that all the artists that start with "The" don't end up up under "T".

=== Type ===
The type is used to explicitly state whether an artist is a person, group, or character. Artists with a known type that does not fit these categories are marked as "Other".

=== Gender ===
The gender is used to explicitly state whether a person or character identifies as male, female or neither. Groups do not have genders.

=== Country ===
The artist country, as the name suggests, stores the country with which an artist is primarily identified with. It does not necessarily have to be the birth country.

=== Begin and end dates ===
See the [[Begin and End Dates|page about dates]] for more information.

=== IPI code ===
An IPI (interested party information) code is an identifying number assigned by the CISAC database for musical rights management. See [[IPI]] for more information, including how to find these codes.

=== Alias ===
Aliases are alternate names for an artist, which currently have two main functions: localised names and search hints. Localised names are used to store the official names used in different languages and countries. These use the locale field to identify which language or country the name is for. Search hints are used to help both users and the server when searching and can be a number of things including alternate names, nicknames or even misspellings. For more information and examples, see the [[Style/Artist/Aliases|guidelines for aliases]].

=== MBID ===
See the [[MusicBrainz_Identifier|page about MBIDs]] for more information.

There are several places in MusicBrainz that store a set of two dates: "Begin Date" and "End Date"; these have different meanings for different cases. In all cases, the dates can vary in its accuracy from just a year to the exact day, although you cannot enter a day without a month or a month without a year.

==For artists==
The begin and end dates indicate when an artist started and finished its existence. Its exact meaning depends on the type of artist:

;For a person:
:Begin date represents date of birth, and end date represents date of death.

;For a group:
:Begin date represents the date when the group ''first'' formed: if a group dissolved and then reunited, the date is still that of when they first formed. End date represents the date when the group ''last'' dissolved: if a group dissolved and then reunited, the date is that of when they last dissolved (if they are together, it should be blank!). For listing other inactivity periods, just use the [[Annotation]] and the [[rt:5be4c609-9afa-4ea0-910b-12ffb71e3821|"member of" relationships]].

;For a character:
:Begin date represents the date (in real life) when the character concept was created. The End date should not be set, since new media featuring a character can be created at any time. In particular, the Begin and End date fields should not be used to hold the fictional birth or death dates of a character. (This information can be put in an [[Annotation]].)

;For others:
:There are no clear indications about how to use dates for artists of the type Other at the moment.

==For labels==
The exact meaning of the begin and end dates depends on the type of label. Note that it's usually hard to know if an imprint has folded or is just on hold, and in generally the end date should only be entered if there's a clear indication of its demise.

;Begin date:
* For officially registered trademarks or companies (holdings, distributors), it's the date at which it was registered.
* For imprints, collection names (when used as labels) and subdivisions (or subsidiaries) for which there is no available creation date, it's the release date of the first release ever issued under that label name.
* For bootleg companies (more generally for obscure/dubious companies), it's also tolerable to use the release date of the first release, unless more accurate data is available.

;End date:
* For companies (holdings, distributors), it's the date at which the company stopped to exist (be it bankrupted or dismantled).
* For imprints, collection names (when used as labels) and subdivisions (or subsidiaries) for which there is no available dismantling date, it's the release date of the last release ever issued under that label name.
* For bootlegs companies (or otherwise obscure/dubious companies), it's also tolerable to use the release date of the last release, unless one has more accurate information.

==For areas==
The dates indicate when a certain area was founded and/or ceased to exist. For example, the [[Area:32f90933-b4b4-3248-b98c-e573d5329f57|Soviet Union]] has a begin date of 1922 and an end date of 1991.

==For relationships==
The use of dates in relationships depends of the relationship type, and sometimes they are not used at all. Check the page for the specific relationship in the [[Advanced Relationship Type|relationship types list]] to know more.
Nikkihttps://wiki.musicbrainz.org/index.php?title=User:Kepstin/STYLE-227/Style/Artist&diff=69189User:Kepstin/STYLE-227/Style/Artist2015-06-06T04:20:59Z
Nikki:

{{Work in progress}}

==Name==

The artist name is the official name of an artist, whether it is a person, band, or character. In most cases, it is the name as found on releases. If an artist uses multiple names, see the guideline for [[/With multiple names|artists using multiple names]] for more details.

Note that you can change how an artist is credited on a release or track when you enter that release. There is usually no need to add a new artist to the database if the artist is already present in our database under a (slightly) different name.

===Definite Articles===
Where an artist name starts with a [[wikipedia:wikt:definite_article|definite article]] (eg. ''the'', ''le'', ''el'', ''der'') on a release, always check whether the definite article is actually part of the artist name when adding or editing the artist. If in doubt, ignore the definite article.

If an artist name does not start with a definite article, but is credited with a definite article on a release, include the definite article in the artist credit. The exception to this is where a join phrase is used before the artist name - in this case, include the definite article in the join phrase.

'''Examples'''
*[[artist:ce8cacb6-c917-41f5-b403-8fb601c89e70|The Glenn Miller Orchestra]] should actually be "Glenn Miller Orchestra", according to their US website.
**[[release:120c8867-f999-4aba-832e-74082964f27e|In the Mood]] should be credited to "Glenn Miller Orchestra" since that is the credit on the release.
**[[release:5b45204b-5de5-4192-a416-fd73dd1e2ca2|In the Nutcracker Mood]] should be credited to "The Glenn Miller Orchestra" since the definite article is used on the release, and there is no join phrase.
**[[release:f0cfc670-9f33-4792-9d7b-566a66d70d2c|The Chesterfield Broadcasts, Volume 1]] should be credited to "The Andrews Sisters" and "Glenn Miller Orchestra" using the join phrase "with the".

==Sort name==

See the guideline for [[/Sort Name|sortnames]].

== Disambiguation comment==

Disambiguation comments should be kept fairly short, with just enough information that someone reading it will recognize the artist they're looking for. The comment field is ''not'' a place to store general background information about the artist, that kind of information should go in the artist's annotation.

Examples:
* [[artist:593abf14-4292-4d62-b365-79c7674cd1a5|Randy Jackson]] has the disambiguation comment "brother of Michael and Janet."
* [[artist:39828c81-cc39-4e8a-8e00-f0874c657d47|Randy Jackson]] has the disambiguation comment "former bassist with Journey and American Idol Judge"

==Country==

For people, use the country where they were born and raised. For groups, use the country where the band was formed. For characters, use the country where the character was created. If the artist is predominantly active in a different country, use that country instead.

Examples:
* [[artist:f27ec8db-af05-4f36-916e-3d57f91ecf5e|Michael Jackson]] has the country "United States"
* [[artist:b10bbbfc-cf9e-42e0-be17-e2c3e1d2600d|The Beatles]] have the country "United Kingdom"

==Gender==

Use the gender the artist identifies as. Use "other" if the artist identifies as something other than "male" or "female".

For characters, the fictional gender of the character should be used. This might not match the gender of a person who performed the character.

The "other" gender option is meant to represent a gender that is neither male nor female, and is not intended for use with entities for which the concept of gender is illogical, such as companies.

==Aliases==

Most classical composers have their works contained either within opuses or catalogues. The Work and Opus Identification section of a CSG for Works title identifies a particular work and the catalogue or opus identifier to which the work belongs.

This is the form, or type, of the overall composition, such as 'symphony'.<ref>A list of common (and uncommon) work forms is [[Proposal:CSGv2/Resources#Work_Forms|available on the CSG resource page]].</ref>
# The form should normally be capitalized using '''sentence case''', e.g., 'Incidental music'.
# The form should almost always use the correct linguistic equivalent for whichever version of CSG for Works is being used. For example, if English CSG for Works is being used, 'Symphonie' would be incorrect, while 'Symphony' would be correct.
#: ''Note:'' This should '''not''' be understood to mean that [[Artist Intent]] is overidden. If the composer invented a ''new'' name for the composition's form, then that name should be used '''untranslated'''. 'Symphonie fantastique' would be correct in English CSG for Works, whereas 'Fantastic symphony' would not.
# When listing more than 2 instruments and/or vocal types, '''spell out 'and'''' (or its linguistic equivalent). '''Do not use an ampersand'''.
# For a case which the count is singular (1 of something), '''do not indicate singular counts'''.
# No particular ordering is ''more'' correct. However, if an instrument is featured in the composition, it should be listed first.
# Certain work types imply an instrument, e.g. a 'concerto' is defined as a composition for solo instrument and orchestra. Thus, any concerto should always have 'orchestra', listed last, in the instruments list.
This is the key and scale in which overall composition is composed.<ref>Some work forms, such as a symphony, can change key and/or scale within or between movements. For such works, use the initial key and scale of the first movement, unless there is good reason to use a different key and scale. However, '''always''' stay consistent; do not use the key of the first movement but the scale of the third movement. For the special case of ''modulating'' keys, modes, and/or scales, see the [[#Modulating_Keys.2C_Modes.2C_and.2For_Scales|applicable advanced structure]].</ref>

# The key and scale should always '''stay consistent with the language being used for the title''', e.g., '''do not''' use the French 'La dièse majeur' in a German CSG for Works title.
# '''Keys should always be uppercased''', unless it is more musicologically correct within the particular language that minor keys be lowercased. e.g. 'si minore'.
# '''Scales should always be lowercased''', unless it is more musicologically correct within the particular language that minor keys be uppercased. e.g. 'His-Dur'.
# When keys are written in English, "sharp" and "flat" must always be lowercased and linked to the key with a hyphen ('E-flat'). For other languages, use whatever hyphenation and/or spacing is most musicologically correct.
Some classical composers, especially the more well known ones, have had their works catalogued by another person.<ref>[[Cataloguer Relationship Type]] can be used to link these cataloguers with the [[Artist|artist]] whom they catalogued.</ref> These catalogues often have quite long names, and thus standard abbreviations are used for them, e.g., 'BWV' or 'KV'. The catalogue abbreviation should be used<ref>This '''overrides''' [[Abbreviation Style]]; catalogue identifiers '''should''' be abbreviated.</ref>, with the catalogue's number for the work then following.
; Examples: BWV 954
: HWV 295
: K. 509 No. 1

Alternately, some composers catalogue themselves using [[WikiPedia:Opus_number|opus numbers]].
; Example: The opus contains only one composition: Op. 88
: The opus contains multiple compositions: Op. 116 No. 1
: Note: Opus should always be abbreviated 'Op.' (including the period)<ref>This '''overrides''' [[Abbreviation Style]]; Opus '''should''' be abbreviated.</ref>.

# A catalogue or opus number can refer to only a single composition, or to many, each individually numbered within the catalogue or opus number.
#* ''Reference [[Proposal:CSGv2/Work/Title/Work_and_opus_identification#abbreviating_number|Abbreviating 'number']] for more information on how the word "number" should be indicated.''
# Some composers have had multiple catalogues made of their works. Such catalogues, if they are considered definitive (and are not musicologically unimportant) may each be listed in the [[Work|work]] title, each catalogue identifier separated by ' / ' (space forward-slash space).
# Some rare movements have two catalogue numbers from within the same catalogue; one for the movement, and one for the overall composition. The catalogue number which should be used at this point is the one assigned to the overall composition.
====Abbreviating 'number'====
: Each language abbreviates the linguistic equivalent of 'number' differently. The correct abbreviation should be used, depending on whichever language version of CSG for Works is being used. '#', 'Number', and 'Num' should '''never''' be used.
: Do not mistake the character "º" (masculine ordinal<ref>To type a masculine ordinal (U+00BA): Windows: Alt+0186, Linux: Ctrl+Shift+U 00BA, Mac: [http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1518 See Apple's support]</ref>) with "°" (degree). A composition may be named. This may be an official name given by the composer, e.g., "[[WikiPedia:Tristan_und_Isolde|Tristan und Isolde]]", "[[WikiPedia:The_Seasons_(Haydn)|The Seasons]]", or "[[WikiPedia:A_London_Symphony|A London Symphony]]", or a name by which the work has come to be known (a 'common' name), e.g., the "[[WikiPedia:Symphony_No._41_(Mozart)|Jupiter]]" symphony.

# For works with a name, the name should be placed after the catalog or opus number.
# If there is a opus work number present, the name is placed after that as well.
# The name ought to be surrounded by quotation marks of the type correct for the CSG language style being used.
# If there is more than one name for a composition, within the quotes use ' / ' (space forward-slash space) to separate the names.
# The name should be capitalized according to the appropriate [[Capitalization Standard]] for that name's language.

; Examples:
: Symphony No. 41 for Orchestra in C major, K. 551 '''"Jupiter"'''
: Missa brevis No. 9 for Soloists, Chorus & Orchestra in C major, K. 196b / KV 220 '''"Spatzenmesse"'''
: Kantate, BWV 106 '''"Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit / Actus tragicus"'''

Within a catalog number, when dealing with more obscure or fragmentary works, the terms 'Anh', 'Anhang', 'Appendix', 'deest', 'desunt', 'vel', and 'WoO' will be sometimes be encountered.

; Anh or Anhang
: German for 'Appendix'
; Appendix
: The appendix to a classical composer's works list. This may contain such items as variant versions and/or arrangements of a composition numbered in the main listing, compositions of doubtful attribution, compositions which only exist in fragmentary or sketch form, spurious works, etc.
; deest
: Latin for 'not present'. These works are typically ones discovered after a composer's catalog is published. In some cases, where later editions of a composer's catalog are published, these works are deest for the initial catalog(s), but have assigned catalog numbers in the later edition(s). Occasionally, if it is decided that the work is perhaps spurious, then later editions may also remove a work from the catalog, such that the work originally had a catalog number, but later became deest.
; desunt
: Plural form of 'deest'.
; vel
: Latin for 'if you prefer'. This will be found between two work forms or catalog numbers.
:: Between two work forms, this indicates that, for the specific composition, the two forms were considered equivalent:
:: Between two catalog numbers, this indicates that the two compositions were assigned different catalog numbers, but are ''almost'', but not, the same. The "vel ..." section is sometimes omitted, but if it is present, the most correct catalog number includes it.
; WoO
: An abbreviation for 'Werk ohne Opuszahl' (German), which translates to 'Work without Opus number'. Like deest, this indicates works which are not otherwise cataloged.

# Works with an Anhung number should use the abbreviation 'Anh' (without a period).<ref>This '''overrides''' [[Abbreviation Style]]; catalogue identifiers '''should''' be abbreviated.</ref>
# None of these terms should be translated. If the catalog number includes "Appendix", then German CSG should use "Appendix". If the catalog number includes "Anhung", then English CSG should use "Anh".
# Note the spelling and capitalization for WoO. The abbreviated term is the German one, not the English translation. "WOO", "WwO", "Wwo", "Woo", etc. are not correct.

; Examples:
* Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Canonical Study, K. 73x/K2 '''''Anh''''' 109d
* Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Psalm in C major, K. 166h/KV '''''Anh''''' 23 / Fr 1774a (fragment): "In te Domine speravi"
* Johann Sebastian Bach - Partita, BWV '''''Anh''''' 78, "Wenn wir in höchsten Nöten sein"
* Sanctus for 4 Voices in E-flat major, K. 296c/K3 296b(discussion)/KV '''''deest'''''
:: This composition was not listed in the original or second edition Köchel catalogs. The third edition of the Köchel catalog listed in the discussion section of K3 296b, but did not assign it its own catalog number. Then the sixth edition of Köchel finally decided it was likely composed by Mozart, and assigned it K. 296c.
* Matthias Weckmann - Toccata '''''vel''''' praeludium in D minor
:: As Weckmann described it, when this work was composed, he considered a 'toccata' to essentially have become the same work form as a 'praeludium', thus the work could be considered to be of either work form.
* Johann Sebastian Bach - Cantata for 2 voices, mixed chorus, and orchestra, BWV 197a/7 '''''vel''''' 398 "Ehre sei Gott in der Höhe"
* Johann Sebastian Bach - Cantata for 2 voices, mixed chorus, and orchestra, BWV 398 "O Gott, du frommer Gott"
:: BWV 197a/7 vel 398 has a passage in the bass line which is lower by an octave than the version in BWV 197a/7, but otherwise the two compositions are identical.
* Johannes Brahms - Hungarian Dance for Four Hands in G minor, '''''WoO''''' 1 No. 1: Allegro molto
Works are assumed, by default, to use the seven note diatonic scale. This is the scale most frequently used in Western music, especially any music composed since the 15th century.<ref>[http://www.medieval.org/emfaq/misc/modality.html When did modal music give way to the modern key system?]</ref>

However, in some cases, an alternate [[WikiPedia:Musical_mode|mode]]<ref>[http://www.dolmetsch.com/musictheory25.htm#modes Music theory online : notes, harmonies & scales: Modes]</ref> may be indicated.<ref>[http://www.medieval.org/emfaq/misc/modes.html What were the twelve modes?]</ref> These can include the augmented, chromatic, whole tone, aeolian, pentatonic, octatonic, and diminished modes, to name only the more common ones. '''When needed, the key and scale should be modified to include the mode'''. Typically the mode will go after the scale, but in some cases (chromatic and whole tone), it is more grammatically and musicologically correct that it either precede or replace the scale.
:* C/C-sharp chromatic
When dealing with alternate temperments<ref>[http://www.dolmetsch.com/musictheory27.htm Music theory online : pitch, temperament & timbre]</ref> or microtones<ref>[http://www.dolmetsch.com/musictheory7.htm The Tone and Semitone; Microtones]</ref>, especially in [[WikiPedia:Enharmonic|enharmonic]] compositions or compositions from non-Western sources<ref>[[WikiPedia:Antoine_de_Bertrand#Music_and_influence|True not only for modern or non-western compositions; see Antoine de Bertrand's ''Je suis tellement amoureux''.]]</ref>, quarter-, three-quarter, and other unusual keys may be encountered.

For works using keys other than the standard diatonic full and half-tone ('flat' or 'sharp') keys, use them as needed. Just as with 'flat' and 'sharp', the key should be spelled out and linked to the scale using the same standard method as the more common half-tones.<ref>The CSG resource page has a [[Proposal:CSGv2/Resources#Keys_and_scales_in_commonly_used_languages|reference listing for full and half-tone keys]] in various languages.</ref>
<nowiki>*</nowiki> Note that there is not yet any standardized term for quarter-tone accidentals in German, though there is a standardized term in for each of the four accidentals in Arabic, English, French, Italian, Norwegian, Portugese, Russian, and Spanish. It is suggested that any work which would require mention of a quarter-tone accidental be limited to CSG in a language which can adequately describe the correct key for the work.
For works using scales other than major or minor, use them as needed.
# The scale ought to be correctly capitalized, depending upon the name of the scale and the rules within the language being used.
# For works using non-diatonic scales, such as Persian or Yaman, insert the scale indication before the key: "...in Yaman A major".
# For works using diatonic scale modifications such as harmonic or melodic, insert the scale modification indication before the key and (if applicable) after the non-diatonic scale name: "...in Yaman harmonic A major".
Some rare works use modulating keys, modes, or scales. In such cases, list both keys, modes, and/or scales. The linguistic equivalent of 'to' should then be used to connect the two.
; Example:
:* Modulating Prelude for Piano in F major '''to E minor''', K. deest NMA IX/27/2 No. 2

[[Composers]] > Erik Satie

==Purpose of this page==

This page is an attempt to list all [[Artist:e1d521ea-5b97-4981-987c-ba988b2a87d7|Erik Satie]] compositions, and to decide of a standard naming for them, having in mind both historical/discographical exactitude, and [[MusicBrainz]] CSG. Once reviewed, this page should serve as an authority for Satie track titles change.

Please note this project is still in its early phase. Please also note that Satie compositions naming presents several specific difficulties and that, to some extent, there exist a number of pieces for which there is simply ''no'' standard naming. Hence, please take this page as a ''convenient helper'', and '''not''' as a ''definitive authority''.

Language used in this listing should be French and titles should follow French typographic rules.
Panda, if I can add two more, I found these on a classical VA compilation, didn't see them in your list. No cat/opus #'s on the liner, all I know is they're piano works.

The first is a typo of "1ère Gymnopédie" (<- you can safely fix it to that), which *maybe* should be harmonized to "Trois Gymnopédies : I. Lent et douloureux". The second is a typo of "Le Picadilly" (one "c" only according Satie, apparently). As for opus/cat # and stuff, well, that's Erik Satie :] - means you can forget the CSG altogether with him ;) -- [[User:dmppanda|dmppanda]] 09:06, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
dmppanda: [http://members.ozemail.com.au/~davcooke/satie.htm This site] suggests that the Trois Gymnopédies were "dedicated" to people. Shouldn't your suggested titles also include these dedications as you have done for the Quatre Ogives? -[[User:AaronCooper|AaronCooper]]
* I'm not too sure. Are dedications even part of the track titles? Or should that go to [[Track Annotation|TrackAnnotation]]
<nowiki></nowiki>
s? Yet an open question actually... both for the Gymnopédies and the Ogives... -- [[User:dmppanda|dmppanda]] 10:28, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

dmppanda: [[[Image:satievol1inlaynh7.jpg]] This cover] suggests different titles for the Quatre Ogives than you have listed here. Is the CD cover incorrect? -[[User:AaronCooper|AaronCooper]]
* I tend to think so. IIRC, the three first titles given here are for "Trois Mélodies", and the last is the third of "Trois Autres Mélodies". Please note that these are supposed to be pieces for voice and piano, while this CD only mention a pianist. So, if there is an error on their part (hence assuming I'm right!), it's in the titling of the pieces... THOUGH, Satie is a complicated composer, and this page is '''far''' from being complete, accurate, or even helpful! Please just take it for what it is: an helper, and stick with sleeves when CDs contradict my data. -- [[User:dmppanda|dmppanda]] 10:28, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
Nikkihttps://wiki.musicbrainz.org/index.php?title=User:Nikki/Lowercase_pages&diff=69167User:Nikki/Lowercase pages2015-06-06T03:45:17Z
Nikki:

== Guidelines ==

# The position (and any attribute used) should be documented; it must not be assumed.
# At any one time, an [[Artist|artist]] may have more than one conductor, but never more than one principal conductor.
# A conductor must be a person [[Artist|artist]].
# The [[Artist|artist]] conducted by the conductor must be a group [[Artist|artist]].
# Only one of the attributes 'assistant', 'associate', 'emeritus', or 'principal' should be used at the same time.
# If the [[WikiPedia:Conducting|conductor]] position specifically involves the training, leading, and/or conducting of a ''choir'' or ''chorus'', then while the action is still 'conducting', the more correct title is 'choirmaster', not 'conductor'. [[Proposal:Choirmaster Position Relationship Type Proposal|Choirmaster Position Relationship Type]] should be used to describe this position, and ''not'' this [[:Category:Relationship Type|relationship type]].
#* In some cases, both an orchestra and a choir coexist, and are conducted by the same [[Artist|artist]]. In such cases, both this [[:Category:Relationship Type|relationship type]] ''and'' [[Proposal:Choirmaster Position Relationship Type Proposal|Choirmaster Position Relationship Type]] should be used.
# This [[:Category:Relationship Type|relationship type]] describes a [[WikiPedia:Conducting|conductor]] ''position'' one [[Artist|artist]] holds with another [[Artist|artist]]. [[Conductor Relationship Type]], ''not'' this [[:Category:Relationship Type|relationship type]], should be used to describe the fact that an [[Artist|artist]] ''conducted'' on a recorded [[Track|track]] or [[Release|release]].
# '''Do not infer attributes.''' The use of any relationship attribute to indicate a specific position should be documented, and not assumed. An inexperienced conductor is not automatically an assistant or associate conductor, nor is a very experienced conductor automatically a conductor emeritus. Likewise, 'guest conductor' is a specific position title; simply because a conductor is credited with "guest conducting" on a release, that conductor '''does not''' automatically become a 'guest conductor'.
== Guidelines ==

# The position (and any attribute used) should be documented; it must not be assumed.
# At any one time, an [[Artist|artist]] may have more than one choirmaster, but never more than one principal choirmaster.
# A choirmaster must be a person [[Artist|artist]].
# The [[Artist|artist]] conducted by the choirmaster must be a group [[Artist|artist]].
# Only one of the attributes 'assistant', 'associate', 'emeritus', or 'principal' should be used at the same time.
# This musical position specifically involves the training, leading, and/or conducting of a ''choir'' or ''chorus''. If the position did not involve a choir, then [[Proposal:Conductor Position Relationship Type Proposal|Conductor Position Relationship Type]], not this [[:Category:Relationship Type|relationship type]], should be used.
#: In some cases, both an orchestra and a choir coexist, and are conducted by the same [[Artist|artist]]. In such cases, both this [[:Category:Relationship Type|relationship type]] ''and'' [[Proposal:Conductor Position Relationship Type Proposal|Conductor Position Relationship Type]] should be used.
# This [[:Category:Relationship Type|relationship type]] describes a [[WikiPedia:Conducting|choirmaster]] ''position'' one [[Artist|artist]] holds with another [[Artist|artist]]. [[Conductor Relationship Type]], ''not'' this [[:Category:Relationship Type|relationship type]], should be used to describe the fact that an [[Artist|artist]] was the choirmaster on a [[Track|track]] or [[Release|release]].
# '''Do not infer attributes.''' The use of any relationship attribute to indicate a specific position should be documented, and not assumed. An inexperienced choirmaster is not automatically an assistant or associate choirmaster, nor is a very experienced choirmaster automatically a choirmaster emeritus. Likewise, 'guest choirmaster' is a specific position title; simply because a choirmaster is credited with "guest conducting" on a release, that choirmaster '''does not''' automatically become a 'guest choirmaster'.
*'''[[Minor Relationship Attribute|founder]]''':This attribute indicates that the person artist was a founding member of the group artist.
===Guidelines===
* Some person artists leave a group artist, then rejoin again later. This should be represented through the use of more than one relationship between the person and group artists, with the appropriate start and end dates set.
* If a person artist is usually known by a particular performance name, use that performance name to link them to the group artist instead of their legal name. If the artist uses multiple performance names, the performance name that should be used is the one that they usually performed under while in the group artist. ''Artists are usually credited by their performance names, rather than their legal names. In fact, the real names of some very well known members of group artists are quite obscure. If an artist's legal name were used to link them to the group artist, instead of their performance name, this would create confusion, and people would likely try to link the performance name anyway.''
==Description==

The type of a [[Release Group|release group]] describes what ''kind'' of release group it is (e.g. single, compilation album). It is divided in two: a release group can have a main (primary) type and an unspecified number of extra (secondary) types.

==Primary types==

===Album===

An album is perhaps better defined as a "Long Play" (LP) release. Typically albums have more than 25 minutes of play time (often much more), and more than four tracks, though this will not always be the case. If the release group is fairly long and not a single, EP or broadcast, it is probably an album. When used without secondary types, an album is usually an original full-length studio release.

===Single===

A single typically has one main song and possibly a handful of additional tracks or alternative versions of the main track. The single is usually named after its main song. There are also sometimes longer versions of a single (in some cases longer than the release the single comes from!) but as it's all alternative versions of the same 2-3 songs it is still classified as a single.

There are other variations of the single, including a "double A-side" single, where two songs are given equal prominence. There is also a "split single" where songs by two different artists are released on the one disc, typically vinyl. In both these cases the single is usually named after the two main songs. The term "B-Side" comes from the era when singles were released on 7 inch (or sometimes 12 inch) vinyl with a song on each side, and so side A is the track that the single is named for, and the other side - side B - would contain a bonus song, or sometimes even the same song.

===EP===

An EP is a so-called "Extended Play" release and often contains the letters EP in the title. Generally an EP will be shorter than a full length release (an album or "Long Play") and the tracks are usually exclusive to the EP, in other words the tracks don't come from a previously issued release. EP is fairly difficult to define; usually it should only be assumed that a release is an EP if the artist defines it as such.

===Broadcast===
An episodic release that was originally broadcast via radio, television, or the Internet, including podcasts.

===Other===

Any release that does not fit or can't decisively be placed in any of the categories above.

The type of a [[Release Group|release group]] describes what ''kind'' of release group it is. It is divided in two: a release group can have a "main" type and an unspecified number of extra types.

==Primary types==

===Album===

An album, perhaps better defined as a "Long Play" (LP) release, generally consists of previously unreleased material (unless this type is combined with secondary types which change that, such as "Compilation").

===Single===

A single has different definitions depending on the market it is released for.
* In the '''US market''', a single typically has one main song and possibly a handful of additional tracks or remixes of the main track; the single is usually named after its main song; the single is primarily released to get radio play and to promote release sales.
* The '''U.K. market''' (also Australia and Europe) is similar to the US market, however singles are often released as a two disc set, with each disc sold separately. They also sometimes have a longer version of the single (often combining the tracks from the two disc version) which is very similar to the US style single, and this is referred to as a "maxi-single". (In some cases the maxi-single is longer than the release the single comes from!)
* The '''Japanese market''' is much more single driven. The defining factor is typically the length of the single and the price it is sold at. Up until 1995 it was common that these singles would be released using a mini-cd format, which is basically a much smaller CD typically 8 cm in diameter. Around 1995 the 8cm single was phased out, and the standard 12cm CD single is more common now; generally re-releases of singles from pre-1995 will be released on the 12cm format, even if they were originally released on the 8cm format. Japanese singles often come with instrumental versions of the songs and also have maxi-singles like the UK with remixed versions of the songs. Sometimes a maxi-single will have more tracks than an EP but as it's all alternate versions of the same 2-3 songs it is still classified as a single.

There are other variations of the single called a "split single" where songs by two different artists are released on the one disc, typically vinyl. The term "B-Side" comes from the era when singles were released on 7 inch (or sometimes 12 inch) vinyl with a song on each side, and so side A is the track that the single is named for, and the other side - side B - would contain a bonus song, or sometimes even the same song.

===EP===

An EP is a so-called "Extended Play" release and often contains the letters EP in the title. Generally an EP will be shorter than a full length release (an LP or "Long Play") and the tracks are usually exclusive to the EP, in other words the tracks don't come from a previously issued release. EP is fairly difficult to define; usually it should only be assumed that a release is an EP if the artist defines it as such.

===Mini-Album===

A Mini-Album (or Mini-LP) is a release that is in between EP and Album in terms of number of tracks and length. The number of tracks is around 7-9,
and the length varies from around 20-35 mins. There is no strict definition along these terms, as many EPs and Albums fit these criteria. What is
important is that the artist or label consistently refers to the release as a Mini-Album. Where this is not the case, notably where Mini-Album and EP
are used interchangeably, EP should be used.

===Broadcast===
An episodic release that was originally broadcast via radio, television, or the Internet, including podcasts.

===Other===

Any release that does not fit or can't decisively be placed in any of the categories above.

==Secondary types==

===Compilation===

A compilation, for the purposes of the [[MusicBrainz]] database, covers the following types of releases:
* an anthology, which is defined as being a group of songs from various sources combined together as a "best of" or retrospective type release.
* a various artists song collection, usually based on a general theme ("Songs for Lovers"), a particular year ("Hits of 1998"), or some other kind of grouping ("Songs From the Movies", the "Café del Mar" series, etc).

The [[MusicBrainz]] project does not generally consider the following to be compilations:
* a reissue of an album, even if it includes bonus tracks.
* a tribute release containing covers of another artists work.
* a classical release containing new recordings of a classical artists work.
* a release containing two albums and/or EPs (these should be tagged as either an 'album' or an 'EP' depending on the circumstances).

Note that there is a certain amount of crossover within the definition of compilation and the other types of release, for example a various artists soundtrack could also be considered a compilation. In general, compilation should be superseded by other release attributes when required.

===Soundtrack===

A soundtrack is the musical score to a movie, TV series, stage show, computer game etc. In the specific cases of computer games, a game CD with audio tracks should be classified as a soundtrack: the musical properties of the CD are more interesting to [[MusicBrainz]] than the data properties.

===Spokenword===

Non-music spoken word releases.

===Interview===

An interview release contains an interview, generally with an Artist.

===Audiobook===

An audiobook is a book read by a narrator without music.

===Live===

A release that was recorded live.

===Remix===

A release that primarily contains remixed material.

===DJ-mix===

A DJ-mix is a sequence of several recordings played one after the other, each one modified so that they blend together into a continuous flow of music. A DJ mix release requires that the recordings be modified in some manner, and the DJ who does this modification is usually (although not always) credited in a fairly prominent way.

===Mixtape/Street===

Promotional in nature (but not necessarily free), mixtapes and street albums are often released by artists to promote new artists, or upcoming studio albums by prominent artists. They are also sometimes used to keep fans' attention between studio releases and are most common in rap & hip hop genres. They are often not sanctioned by the artist's label, may lack proper sample or song clearances and vary widely in production and recording quality. While mixtapes are generally DJ-mixed, they are distinct from commercial DJ mixes (which are usually deemed compilations) and are defined by having a significant proportion of new material, including original production or original vocals over top of other artists' instrumentals. They are distinct from demos in that they are designed for release directly to the public and fans; not to labels.
===Album===

An album is perhaps better defined as a "Long Play" (LP) release. While there's no clear boundary that separates an album from an EP, if a release is longer than 25 minutes and isn't explicitly called an EP "album" is usually the best choice. Albums generally consist of previously unreleased material, except for compilation albums.

===EP===

===Other===

Any release that does not fit or can't decisively be placed in any of the categories above.

==Extra types==

===Compilation===

A compilation, for the purposes of MusicBrainz, covers the following types of releases:
* an anthology, which is defined as being a group of songs from various sources combined together as a "best of" or retrospective type release.
* a various artists song collection, usually based on a general theme ("Songs for Lovers"), a particular year ("Hits of 1998"), or some other kind of grouping ("Songs From the Movies", the "Café del Mar" series, etc).

MusicBrainz does not generally consider the following to be compilations:
* a tribute release containing covers of another artist's work, or any other release containing new recordings of an artist's work, by himself or others, whether the music is popular (like [[ReleaseGroup:0096c5ef-5135-31a0-9b47-a93fca2ee119|Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells 2003]]) or classical (like any new recording of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons).
* a release containing two albums and/or EPs (these should be tagged as either an 'album' or an 'EP' depending on the circumstances).

Note that there is a certain amount of crossover within the definition of compilation and the other types of release. In that case, just select both "compilation" and any other type that applies, like "soundtrack" or "remix".

===Soundtrack===

A soundtrack is the musical score to a movie, TV series, stage show, computer game etc. In the specific cases of computer games, a game CD with audio tracks should be classified as a soundtrack: the musical properties of the CD are more interesting to [[MusicBrainz]] than the data properties.

===Spokenword===

Non-music spoken word releases.

===Interview===

An interview release contains an interview, generally with an Artist.

===Audiobook===

An audiobook is a book read by a narrator without music.

===Live===

A release that was recorded live.

===Remix===

A release that primarily contains remixed material.

This is a proposed replacement for the Type section of [[Style/Release_Group]].

==Description==

The [[Release Group|release group]] type is a release group attribute that describes what ''kind'' of release group it is. It consists of two parts, both of which are described in the sections below. Firstly there is the ''base type'', which should be exactly one of ''Album'', ''Single'', ''EP'', ''Compilation'' and ''Other''. Secondly, there are additional flags, which may or may not be set for the release group: ''Soundtrack'', ''Spokenword'', ''Interview'', ''Live'' and ''Audiobook''.

==Base types==

Every release group falls in to exactly one of the following categories.

===Album===

An album, perhaps better defined as a "Long Play" (LP) release, generally consists of previously unreleased material. This includes album re-issues, with or without bonus tracks.

Examples:
* [[releasegroup:1a272023-10d3-38ee-bab3-317b55fcc21d|Wish You Were Here]] (by the English rock group [[artist:83d91898-7763-47d7-b03b-b92132375c47|Pink Floyd]])
* [[releasegroup:d1cfc4b2-1ca9-34a2-839c-4ecd090bebec|The Five Cello Sonatas / Variations (Jacqueline du Pré feat. piano: Daniel Barenboim)]] (an example with classical music)

===Single===

Examples:
* [[releasegroup:2a581f1f-20bf-3797-803c-ec3ac1a7c6c5|Whole Lotta Love / Living Loving Maid]] (by rock group, [[artist:678d88b2-87b0-403b-b63d-5da7465aecc3|Led Zeppelin]])
* [[releasegroup:fcd58b7d-77c0-37db-9334-5f50d92b09f1|LOVEマシーン]] (by [[artist:9bffb20c-dd17-4895-9fd1-4e73e888d799|モーニング娘。]], or Morning Musume, a Japanese idol girl group)

===EP===

Examples:
* [[releasegroup:b673c2a9-bba0-37ee-8bdc-07386f12541c|Loops of Fury]] (The first EP from the electronic music duo [[artist:1946a82a-f927-40c2-8235-38d64f50d043|The Chemical Brothers]])
* [[release:a595c429-6590-47cd-b827-11bd542ebd14|Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos Soundtrack EP]] (The sound track from a computer game)

===Compilation===

The MusicBrainz project does not generally consider the following to be compilations:
* a tribute release containing covers of another artists work.
* a classical release containing new recordings of a classical artists work.
* a release containing two albums and/or EPs (these should be tagged as either an 'album' or an 'EP' depending on the circumstances).

Note that there is a certain amount of crossover within the definition of compilation and the other types of release, for example a various artists soundtrack could also be considered a compilation. In general, compilation should be superseded by other release attributes when required.

Examples:
* [[releasegroup:169b09fc-ab80-355b-b5ef-9423f0c21a5d|La Vie en rose]] (A collection of [[artist:4f8ef4a3-40fa-46b5-8773-97686a8424f4|Édith Piaf's]] greatest hits)
* [[releasegroup:62d3ac79-89e1-3499-902d-10f2914bffb5|The Best of Naxos 9]] (A collection from [[label:615fa478-3901-42b8-80bc-bf58b1ff0e03|Naxos]]'s enormous catalogue of classical recordings).

===Other===

Any release that does not fit or can't decisively be placed in any of the categories above.

Examples:
* TODO
* TODO

==Additional Flags==

A release group has one or more of these properties. Two of them only make sense with the ''Other'' base type, so the first part of each description lists the base types with which the flag can be used.

===Live===

Can be used with any base type.

A release that was recorded live.

Examples:
* [[release:92485616-606b-331c-af8e-b66304893aac|Jazz at Oberlin]] (A live session from the Jazz quartet, [[artist:7bf711e9-4e69-4e08-b6e8-c0cb5805f1e7|The Dave Brubeck Quartet]])
* [[releasegroup:77934bf6-ea7e-3f26-9e68-5ba1f95b6fd0|Symphony No. 5 (Berliner Philharmoniker feat. conductor: Claudio Abbado)]] (A live classical concert)

===Classical===

Can be used with any base type.

A release group with this flag follows the [[Classical_Style_Guide]]. This is used for releases that are entirely, or predominantly, performances of classical music. The flag is useful because it allows tagging software such as [[MusicBrainz Picard]] to automatically treat such releases differently.

===Soundtrack===

Can be used with any base type.

This flag signifies that the release group contains the musical score to a movie, TV series, stage show, computer game or the like. In the specific case of computer games, a game CD with audio tracks should be classified as a soundtrack: the musical properties of the CD are more interesting to [[MusicBrainz]] than its data.

===Spokenword===

Can be used with any base type.

Spoken word releases are not music. See [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoken_word_album]].

===Interview===

Can only be used with the ''Other'' base type.

An ''interview'' release contains an interview, generally with an [[Artist]].

===Audiobook===

Can only be used with the ''Other'' base type.

An audiobook is a book read by a narrator without music.

===Remix===

Can be used with any base type.

A release that primarily contains remixed material.
:Originally referred to as "Advanced Relationships".
:A relationship is a connection between two [[#Entity|entities]] in a database.
:They can be thought of, loosely, as the "verb phrases" in a Subject-Verb-Object statement.
::Example:

!!!;[[Release|release]]
:Casually, "release" is often used interchangeably with "album", as in "Hey! The New Originals have a new release out!"
:But for the purposes of MusicBrainz, a "release" is a specific printing/pressing/issue sold in a specific locale. While MB doesn't have an "album" entity ''per se'', the "release group" entity is close.

;[[Release/Date|release date]]
:The date that a release was released in a particular region. It is <underline>not</underline> the date on which the release was recorded or performed, and it is not the copyright date.

!!!;[[Release_Group|release group]]
:A "container" used to group together all the various versions and reissues of a release. This is the closest thing MusicBrainz has to an "album" entity.
::Example: the release group for [[ReleaseGroup:8e8a594f-2175-38c7-a871-abb68ec363e7|Kind of Blue]] by Miles Davis

;RFV
:"Request for Veto", the second stage in the [[#proposals|proposal]] process, a 2 day window in which a prosal can be vetoed.

;script
:In the context of MusicBrainz, "script" might mean
:#The "[[Release#Script|release script]]", a particular writing system or alphabet, such as "Latin", "Katakana" or "Cyrillic".

;[[Sort_Name|sort name]]
:A name that has been re-ordered (as needed) to facilitate alphabetically ordered lists.
;[[Standalone_Recording|standalone recording]] (or ''SAR'')
:A [[#Recording|recording]] which does not appear on a [[#Release|release]]. Prior to [[#NGS|NGS]], these were referred to as "[[#NAT|Non-album Tracks]]" (aka NATs).

;[[Sub Optimal Credits]]
:There will always be some credits that cannot be entered in the database exactly as they appear on a release. In such cases, an explanation can be included in the [[#Annotation|annotation]] under the heading <nowiki>[[Sub_Optimal_Credits]]</nowiki>.

In [[MusicBrainz Terminology|MusicBrainz terminology]], a prototypical medium is one of the physical, separate things you would get when you buy something in a record store. They are the individual CDs, vinyls, etc. contained within the packaging of an album (or any other type of [[Release|release]]). Mediums are always included in a [[Release|release]], and have a position in said release (e.g. disc 1 or disc 2). They have a format, like CD, 12" vinyl or cassette (in some cases this will be unknown), and can have an optional title (e.g. disc 2: The Early Years).

Note that a side of a disc, like side A of a vinyl, is not its own medium; the whole vinyl disc is. Digital (as opposed to physical) releases don't have "real" mediums, but they should be entered as several mediums if they are officially divided in several "discs". Exceptions in the treatment of mediums can exist: DualDiscs are usually entered as two mediums if the tracklist is the same on both sides, but with different mixes.

[[Disc ID]]s are linked to mediums.

==Examples==
These are mediums of their respective [[release]]s.
* CD 1 of the 1984 US release of ''"[[release:4bd2dbd5-a961-335a-a618-39c26b2ee791|The Wall]]"'' by Pink Floyd.
* CD 2 of the 2005 UK release of ''"[[release:f205627f-b70a-409d-adbe-66289b614e80|Aerial]]"'' by Kate Bush, named ''"A Sky of Honey"''.
* 12" vinyl 1 of the 1975 US release of ''"[[release:0d06025c-afff-49fd-a1db-8005e686e4d9|Physical Graffiti]]"'' by Led Zeppelin.
** And also 12" vinyl 2 of the same release (but not sides A, B, C and D!).
* Digital Media 1 of the 2010 US digital release of ''"[[release:f49244dd-7921-41d0-b5d8-ebf531c776b1|My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy]]"'' by Kanye West.

==Dates==
When adding a medium to an existing release, please ensure that year of release does not conflict with the medium being added. Here are the dates of first commercial releases for some common formats:

* 7" records: c.1895

* 10" records: c. 1898

* 12" records: 1903

* Reel-to-Reel: 1954

* 8-Track: 1964

* Cassettes: late 1965

* Compact Disc: October 1, 1982

* SACD: September 1999

* DVD-A: 2000

__TOC__
A recording is an entity in MusicBrainz which can be linked to [[Track|tracks]] on [[Release|releases]]. Each track must always be associated with a single recording, but a recording can be linked to any number of tracks.

A recording represents distinct audio that has been used to produce at least one released track through copying or [[Mix_Terminology#mastering|mastering]]. A recording itself is never produced solely through copying or mastering.

Generally, the audio represented by a recording corresponds to the audio at a stage in the production process before any final mastering but after any editing or [[Mix_Terminology#mixing|mixing]].

The diagram below shows some examples of recorded audio, recordings and released tracks and the relationships between them:
