+Various stuff from several wikipedia articles.+<br />
(Also there is need to translate the german ones which have more information. Further enwiki has merged the dilruba and the esraj, while we do have them separate. (here is stuff taken from an old revision of the now redirecting page))<br />
<br />
The Dilruba (Punjabi: ਦਿਲਰੁਬਾ) is an Indian string instrument found in two forms throughout the Indian subcontinent. It is a relatively young instrument, being only about 300 years old. The Dilruba (translated as heart stealing) is found in North India, primarily Punjab, where it is used in Sikh music and Hindustani classical compositions and in West Bengal. The Esraj is a modern variant of the Dilruba, differing slightly in structure.<br />
<br />
The Dilruba and its variant, the Esraj, had been declining in popularity for many decades. By the 1980s, the instrument was nearly extinct. However with the rising influence of the "Gurmat Sangeet" movement, the instrument has been once again attracting considerable attention. <br />
The dilruba was created some 300 years ago by the 10th Sikh guru, Guru Gobind Singh, who based it on the much older, and heavier, taus[1][2] This made it more convenient for the Khalsa, the Sikh army, to carry the instrument on horseback. <br />
<br />
esraj<br />
The same instrument family includes rubab, sarangi, sarinda and dilruba.<br />
<br />
For similar shaped instruments, see Ghaychak (Persia), Kobyz (Kazakhstan), Kyl kyyak (Kyrgyzstan), Sarinda (India & Nepali), Dhodro banam (Santhals in East India) Sarangi (Nepali), etc.<br />

*sitar*<br />
hindustani sitar seems to have more in common with large uzbek dutar than persian setar<br />
sitar and souther tambura (drone tanbura? yes!) to be evolved from the dutar?<br />
also Sarasvati vina from this?<br />
sitar has frets, tambura not<br />
terms "fretted and unfretted tambura" used to distinguish between sitar and fretless drone taMbura<br />
sursotta (transportable drone tambura)<br />
+other sitar types:+ (distribution and related features suggest a common development)<br />

modern: <br />
most common: +Hindustani concert sitar+ aka tarafdar sitar (singel gourd and duble gourd)<br />

resonator, front and bridge from sitar, upperpart of neck/pegboard like the *rabab*, tuned and played like *rabab*, plectrum like sitar.<br />
(clearly this is a sitar/rabab hybrid)<br />
it has a sub-branch the sitariya (see sitar \-_\-)<br />
<br />
*rabab* -> sarod<br />
<br />
double chested *rabab* (pearshaped lute rubab)<br />
long-necked {color:#707070}rabab{color} (spikefiddle rebab)<br />

<br />
*svaraj* fretless long necked plucked lute from bangladesj, it is a bangl version of the bengali/northindian dotara, it ought to be spelled saraj (see esraj) <br />
<br />
.<br />
<br />
+Conclusions:+<br />
To be added: the banam and the [sarinda|https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarinda]. <br />
is the sarinda the same as the saranda?<br />
What to do with the nepalese sarangi, is it reeally different enough to be separated? it seems only enwiki (therefore commons and WD) keeps them separate, we have it combined and, even _Nepalese_ wikipedia just redirects one to the other. (the name sounds the same but नेपाली redirects to सारङ्गी )<br />

rebab/rubab is a difficult names instrument, one is specifically a different thing which is not related to this(the thin spikefiddle), while one is indeed related(pearshaped lutefiddle/li(y)ra), herein also the ghaychak/ghijak problem from INST-371 is related:<br />
<br />
{color:#707070}rebab: bowed string instrument often has a spike at the bottom to rest on the ground and is thus called a spike fiddle in certain areas, but plucked versions like the kabuli rebab (sometimes referred to as the robab or rubab) also exist. {color}<br />
<br />
Besides the spike fiddle variant, there +also exists a variant with a pear-shaped body+(rubab?), quite similar to the Byzantine lyra and the Cretan lyra. This latter variant travelled to western Europe in the 11th century,[3] and became the rebec. <br />
<br />
rebec: bowed stringed instrument of the Medieval and the early Renaissance era. In its most common form, it has a narrow boat-shaped body and 1-5 strings. Played on the arm or under the chin, the technique and tuning may have influenced the development of the violin. Popular from the 13th to 16th centuries, the introduction of the rebec into Western Europe coincided with the Arabic conquest of the Iberian Peninsula. There is however evidence of the existence of bowed instruments in the 9th century in Eastern Europe. The Persian geographer of the 9th century Ibn Khurradadhbih cited the bowed Byzantine lira (or lūrā) as typical bowed instrument of the Byzantines and equivalent to the Arab rebab.(the pearshaped variant aka rubab?)<br />
<br />
rubab lute-like musical instrument originating from central Afghanistan (arab or afgan?)<br />
<br />
sarod <br />
The sarod is widely believed to have descended from the Afghan rubab, a similar instrument originating in Central Asia and Afghanistan.[1] Many scholars of Indian classical music believe that the sarod is a combination of the ancient +Chitra veena+, the medieval Rabab and modern +Sursingar+. There is also speculation that the oud may be the origin of the sarod. <br />
<br />
sursingar: It is larger than the sarod and produces a deeper sound. It precedes the sarod chronologically. (so the sarod is a combo of this and the chitra. here "medieval rabab", is pearshaped arabafgan rubab? )<br />
.<br />
<br />
+interlude+<br />
rebab: unrelated spikefiddle (\?)<br />
rubab: pearshaped arab/afgan lute/lira relevant here (\?)<br />
rabab: -idk?? (poss nothing but an alias for either)- rabab is a two bodied lute (aka the kabuli rebab)<br />
(either name is used for either thing, but for our uses it is imperative we make a decision for each name and Stick To It! )<br />

<br />

<br />
This article is about the north Indian "Seni rebab" used by Sikhs. For the Afghan plucked instrument otherwise known as the "Kabuli rebab", see Rubab. For the bowed spike fiddle, as used in Arab countries and in the Indonesian gamelan, see Rebab. For the mediaeval European instrument sometimes called the "rubible", see Rebec.<br />
<br />
The Calabrian lira is closely related to the bowed lira (Greek: λύρα) of the Byzantine Empire. The Persian geographer of the 9th century Ibn Khurradadhbih (died 911) was the first to cite the Byzantine lira, as a typical bowed instrument of the Byzantines (Margaret J. Kartomi, 1990). Similar bowed instruments descendants of the Byzantine lira have continued to be played in many post-Byzantine regions until the present day with small changes: the gadulka in Bulgaria, the lyra of Crete and the Dodecanese in Greece,the lyra of Pontos and the classical kemenche (Turkish:Armudî kemençe, Greek:Πολίτικη Λύρα ~ Politiki lira) in Turkey. The Byzantine lira spread westward to Europe, with uncertain evolution; authors in the 11th and 12th centuries use the words fiddle and lira interchangeably (Encyclopædia Britannica. 2009).<br />
.<br />
.<br />
<br />
This is how these then relate to eachother and to instruments already in the database:<br />

== Yazh ==<br />
<br />
''Translation of the [https://ta.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%AE%AF%E0%AE%BE%E0%AE%B4%E0%AF%8D Tamil] Wikipedia page''<br />
<br />
The yazh is the most important of the ancient musical instruments. Yazh means it is made of "nerves" (strings). The basic classifications of musical instruments are those made with hide, those contaning holes, those with strings and meedatru karuvi (?). Of these, the stringed instrument yazh was the first musical instrument played by Tamils.<br />
<br />
The yazh was the first instrument based on which other stringed instruments were developed. This instrument has become completely forgotten and is basically an ancestor of the veena. Yazh is also called "kellvi" (question mark) due to its shape. <br />
<br />
<br />
== History ==<br />
<br />
One of the instruments in use in hilly regions was the bow (?). When the bow is strung and arrow released, the sound that was made was the source for the creation of the yazh. This bow gave rise to the "bow lute" (vil yazh). Though the Paditrupattu (a book of poems) says that the yazh originated in forest land, its more appropriate origin is in the hilly regions because hunting was a major occupation only in hilly regions.<br />
<br />
This vil yazh, because of human effort and labour, has multiple types. <br />
<br />
Even though descriptive text can be found in ancient literature, the absence of drawings or sculptures stops one from exactly knowing the shape and structure of the yazh; it can only be postulated. Sangam literature (puranaanooru, kalithogai, paripadal and aatrupadai books, thirukkural, silappadhikaram, perungadai, jeevagachintamani etc. epics and spiritual literature) contain information about the yazh. Still, we can only make out the types as peri yazh (big), siri yazh (small), magara yazh (red), sakoda yazh (?) but we don't know the real structure. <br />
<br />
Pallava temples (Kanchi Kailasnath, Rajaraja Chola's temple etc.) have yazh sculptures. <br />
<br />
<br />
== Development ==<br />
<br />
Even though the yazh originated in hilly landscapes, it spread to other regions as well. Players of this instrument were called "banars" and literature talks about them. Of the yazh players, there were two divisions - big and small yazh players. Based on the musicians there are two books in Sangam literature using which we can understand the importance of these musicians. <br />
<br />
These books describe how the kings praised and revered these musicians. This is an accompanying instrument while singing. From being a common man's instrument it became one worthy of worship. <br />
<br />
Tamilians gave prime importance to music that originated from the yazh. Because of this, starting from one string, 3, 5, 7... 1000-stringed yazh came into being. Though the shape was not initially a consideration, different kinds of red yazh came into being. The yazh grew like this until the 9th century A.D. Afterwards it developed into the veena. This veena is today one of the foremost instruments in music. <br />
<br />
<br />
== Yazh and Veena ==<br />
<br />
In Sangam literature and early epics, only the yazh is mentioned. Later on, in Bhakti literature, both yazh and veena are described as reflected in ‘seven-music yazh’ ‘veena along with bow’ which are lines from Manickavasagar’s poem. 9 century AD ‘s Seevaga Chinthamani line ‘Veena aka Yazh and song’ indicates yazh-along-with-a-plectrum as a veena. While explaining the line ‘Seevagan won against vellimalai (silver mountain) Verkannaal’, the translator means that Seevagan won with yazh and song. Through this we can infer that yazh was referred to as veena and developed as an independent musical instrument. In Silappadikaaram, there is a line which says ‘Naarada’s veena and song’. Adiyaarku Nallar<br />
translates this as Yazh. <br />
From around 1800 years ago, the word veena has been in use in Tamil. Even Ilango-adigal uses the line ‘for auspicious beginnings along with the sound of veena’. The word veena here refers to the human body. So the word veena was possibly in use in multiple contexts.<br />
Later on, the word came to refer to the musical instrument.<br />
<br />
<br />
== In literature ==<br />
<br />
In Akananuru, Purananuru, natrinai, Perumpaanatruppatai, Porunaratruppatai, Cirupanatruppatai, Paripaatal, Malaipatukataam etc. describe and have various references of how to play the yazh, types of yazh and their structure and parts. Silapadikaaram vividly narrates the types of yazh, parts of a yazh, how to tune the yazh and how to play it. In Seevaga Chintamani, while detailing a contest between a lady who is a Gandarvadatta musician and Seevagan, there are mentions of what can go wrong with the yazh, the grammar needed to play the yazh etc. The writings of the Thirumarai teachers, in multiple places the yazh is said to be used for worship. Thirugnana Sambandar’s Thevaaram has been translated beautifully on the yazh by Thiruneelakanda yazhpaanar.<br />
In 1947, Swami Vipulaananda, a Sri Lankan, has compiled many research pieces into his book called ''Yazh nool''.<br />
<br />
<br />
== Structure ==<br />
<br />
<br />
The yazh is a stringed instrument. The lowest portion is the resonator, which is made from the ''Thannakku'' tree. This is boat-shaped. The top is covered by a layer of skin called sheet-skin. There is a rod that is positioned across this skin, which has pegs. Strings are attached to the top of the stem. Some yazh had mechanisms to tighten the strings. In some cases the positions of the strings were moveable, and the sound was thus adjusted. Sangam literature refers to various parts of the yazh by naming them.<br />
<br />
== Song which describes yazh ==<br />
<br />
<br />
== Yazh’s shape according to Perumpaanaatrupadai ==<br />
<br />
''“Yazh, which is made of skin which is red like a split trumpet flower, with a sheet covering that is smooth like it was derived from the betel-nut tree, its mouth looks like a the mouth of a dried-up spring. The strings look taut like bangles on the hands of much-wearied girls. It has a big long stem like a blue-mountain. The strings look like they were made of molten gold.”'' <br />
With these words, we can picture how the yazh looked.<br />
<br />
<br />
== Yazh according to Adiyaarku Nallaar ==<br />
<br />
''"Each person measures about 8 times their hand-measure (i.e., from tip of mid-finger to thumb, at max stretch). The Periyazh is 12 hand-measures. It’s width is one hand-measure(??)"''<br />
says Nallaar, who lived in the 12th century.<br />
<br />
<br />
== Types of yazh ==<br />
<br />
''Kallaadam'', an ancient text from 9 th century talks about the following types of yazh:<br />
1. Bow yazh – 21 strings<br />
2. Periyazh – 21 strings<br />
3. Makara yazh or Red yazh – 17 or 19 strings<br />
4. Sakoda yazh – 16 strings<br />
5. Keechaka yazh – 100 strings<br />
6. Sengotti yazh – 7 strings<br />
7. Seeri yazh – 7 strings<br />
Other than these, there are also Naarada yazh (100 strings), Naarada periyazh, ancient periyazh (100 strings), thumburu yazh, medicinal yazh (deva yazh), antique (1000 strings), parrot yazh, lute yazh, hilly yazh, desert yazh, forest yazh, fertile-land yazh, seashore yazh (These are the five kinds of land described in ancient Tamil literature, each having its own yazh) and many such types of yazh described in ancient literature. Makara yazh is said to have originated in Greece (Yavana). Mr. A. Raghavan from Saathaankulam refers to 24 types of yazh in his book:<br />
1. Bow yazh<br />
2. Seeri yazh<br />
3. Sengotti yazh<br />
4. Periyazh<br />
5. Sakoda yazh<br />
6. Makara yazh (lancet-flag yazh, Kaama-flag yazh, Varna’s-vehicle yazh)<br />
In the Tamil Conference Exhibition held in Coimbatore, the following types of yazhs, which are ~700<br />
years old, were on display:<br />
1. Sengotti yazh<br />
2. Bull yazh (likely bull-skin yazh?)<br />
3. Peacock yazh<br />
4. Mayuri yazh<br />
<br />
== How to play ==<br />
<br />
Each string of the yazh helps sharpen each sruti (?). Only sruti surs can be played on the yazh. The yazh was tuned using the Sembaalai or harikaamboji melam (?) first, then they played using grihabedas (?).<br />
<br />
<br />
== Decline ==<br />
<br />
Today yazh is out of favor and not in use. Experts feel the rise of the veena has been the cause of the fall of the yazh. They also opine that over a period of centuries the yazh slowly transformed into the veena. It is possible to play subtle srutis using the veena. Also, the veena has metallic strings with bridges (frets?). Being easier to play and learn, and also being able to produce more nuanced sounds, were the reasons for the veena’s popularity, but still, both the yazh and the veena apparently coexisted for many centuries.</div>Reosarevokhttps://wiki.musicbrainz.org/index.php?title=User:CatCat/v*na&diff=77566&oldid=0User:CatCat/v*na2024-03-25T07:39:49Z<p><a href="/User:Reosarevok" class="mw-userlink" title="User:Reosarevok"><bdi>Reosarevok</bdi></a> moved page <a href="/index.php?title=User:CatCat/v*na&redirect=no" class="mw-redirect" title="User:CatCat/v*na">User:CatCat/v*na</a> to <a href="/User:ApeKattQuest,_MonkeyPython/v*na" title="User:ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython/v*na">User:ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython/v*na</a> Automatically moved page while renaming the user "<a href="/User:CatCat" class="mw-redirect" title="User:CatCat">CatCat</a>" to "<a href="/User:ApeKattQuest,_MonkeyPython" title="User:ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython">ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython</a>"</p>

Initially used as a name for any chordophone, ancient "veena" were musical bows with increasing strings such as <br />
these later developed into Harp veena like yazh and the burmese saung gauk.<br><br />
concordantly, short necked lutes originating from graeco-buddhist northwestern gandhara province. these where played standing but held variously, pearshaped pipa-like lutes appear in peninsular India, these were played sitting or standing. kaccapi vina is believed to be lute-type.<br />

=== Fretless Stick Zither ===<br />
<br />
The Vicitrā vīṇā is the northern fretless instrument, it is a Stick Zither, but this is actually of the hybrid bīṇ sitār type: it has a wide neck (about 10 cm) which is D shaped with the sympathetic strings' pegs set in the side. The neck ends in an integrated wood resonator, often carved like a peacock's head, in some cases it is smaller and pear-shaped, in others it is larger like the sitar's. The hollow neck has two large bottle-gourds screwed into the back. The main strings are tuned in descending 4th and 5ths, the slider (baṭṭā) is a glass egg.<br />

== ngɔni: donso ngɔni, kamalen ngɔni, jeli ngɔni ==<br />
<br />
Depending on the context, ''ngɔni'' may refer to one of these three instruments:<br />
* ''donso ngɔni'' -- six-stringed lute-harp from Wassoulou, West Africa, traditionally played by hunters<br />
* ''kamalen ngɔni'' -- modern derivative of the ''donso ngɔni'', it comes with more strings and/or a different size<br />
* ''jeli ngɔni'' -- four-stringed lute from West Africa, traditionally played by griots<br />
<br />
Warning, ''ngoni'' is often misused to designate any instrument close to one of the above, and conversely! <br />
<br />
Sources:<br />
* A '''reference book''' is “Mande Music: Traditional and Modern Music of the Maninka and Mandinka of Western Africa” by Eric Charry which can be partially read (unfortunately not all of chapters 2, 3, and 5) at https://books.google.fr/books?id=_gA9a3qkglwC thanks to https://voyageforum.com/v.f?post=2864337#2864337<br />

<br />
<p>Yes! it's been quitesome time since last, haven't it! but despite the lack of bloposts, I haven't been faffing the *entire* cornona time! Instead we have been updating quite a lot of instruments with <a href="https://blog.metabrainz.org/2020/12/31/musicbrainz-servers-update-december-2020/">IROM images </a> and also doing a few tickets here and there, as well as updating A LOT of aliases.</p><br />
<br />
But Thankfully now we are up in gear again and can release a (albeit small) proper release! I present to you Endelig Belg!<br />
<br />
<br />

</ul><br />
</li><br />
</ul><br />
<br />
Finally we also had some other instruments including in Harmonia/Reed Organ alias-disambiguations and adding, sorting out various other related instruments and their aliases and IROM images. these don't have tickets, but see the https://tickets.metabrainz.org/issues/?filter=12216 for things that have also been closed in the meantime.)<br />
<br />
<br />
Do not despair Fellow Instrument Afficionadoes! the broad strokes of another MiniVersion has already been done as well!<br />

For years, we've done an amazing job of combining individual users' donations and commercial data users' financial support to be a sustainable non-profit which finishes almost every year in the black (see [https://metabrainz.org/finances/ our financial reports]), which is quite the achievement when even tons of commercially successful companies lose money every year and only survive through new investment. That said, IT is a very competitive field and we can't pay the most competitive wages, since we're still a relatively small non-profit. That means we keep losing some of our talented engineers to large companies who can afford to treat them a lot better. After years of this, we've decided we need to find additional sources of income.<br />
<br />
During the last couple years we've been following with interest the talk about Web3 and specifically Music3, and how it has become a great way of giving users something they really want and enjoy while raising significant amounts of money in the process. As such, we've taken a historical decision: We're going to sell NFTs of MusicBrainz artist pages! (and book people, don't worry; if the reception is as positive as we expect, we will expand this to BookBrainz author pages to help finance and accelerate the development of BookBrainz).<br />
<br />
If you purchase an NFT of a MusicBrainz artist page, you'll not only get the NFT itself, but you will get credited on the artist page so that everyone knows that you supported us by purchasing the NFT (and, of course, so that they know who to contact if they want to make you an offer to buy it themselves). We will track any resales and update the displayed name accordingly.<br />
<br />
<center>[[File:liszt_nft.png||A full commitment's what I'm thinking of]]</center><br />
<br />
We can already announce the system we're planning to use for determining the starting sale price for the NFTs: we will base it on the [https://listenbrainz.org/ ListenBrainz] count of listens for that specific artist. For example, given that Radiohead have (as of now) around 840,000 listens, while Def Leppard have around 84,000, we would set the starting price for the Radiohead NFT around 10 times higher than the Def Leppard one. Of course, that's just the starting price, and resale prices will likely depend also on the specific buyer's music tastes! We are still working on deciding what the cost-per-listen will be, but expect a new post with more details about pricing soon. You'll notice this also means that the more usage ListenBrainz gets, the higher the prices; this is intentional, and we expect that this system where the income grows as ListenBrainz grows too will help us scale the development as needed.<br />
<br />
How will you be able to purchase our NFTs? We weren't really satisfied with any of the available options, and we want to be in control of the whole process, so we've teamed with a group of blockchain experts to build our own blockchain, which we're naming Ricast. We are aware of [https://www.investopedia.com/tech/whats-environmental-impact-cryptocurrency/ the large environmental impact] of the most common proof-of-work blockchains, so since we're an environmentally conscious organization who was never gonna run around and desertify the planet, the Ricast blockchain will of course operate on proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, which has significantly lower environmental costs. Our PoS NFTs will allow you to support MetaBrainz without feeling bad about it! We will give more details about the Ricast blockchain in a further, more technical post, so for the geekier of you, stay tuned! Together with the Ricast blockchain, we will also be launching its accompanying coin, the rollcoin.<br />
<br />
We're hoping this is a huge success, because it would really help us hire more full time developers to give our users all the new features they've wanted for years (and some they don't even know they want yet). We've known each other for so long, and we really want to take this relationship to a new level. Trust us, and we're never gonna let you down!<br />
<br />
As a final teaser, here's the icon for our new coin, the rollcoin:<br />
<br />
<center>[[File:coin.png||Inside we both know what's been going on]]</center><br />
<br />
We understand some of you might be skeptical about the whole idea, whether for technical or ethical reasons. Our founder Robert Kaye goes deeper into our reasons for doing this and why we think it's the right decision for us at this moment in [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ this video]. If you've watched it and your doubts are still not assuaged, feel free to start a discussion in the comments below.</div>Reosarevokhttps://wiki.musicbrainz.org/index.php?title=User:CatCat/aprilsnarr/22&diff=77554&oldid=0User:CatCat/aprilsnarr/222024-03-25T07:39:48Z<p><a href="/User:Reosarevok" class="mw-userlink" title="User:Reosarevok"><bdi>Reosarevok</bdi></a> moved page <a href="/index.php?title=User:CatCat/aprilsnarr/22&redirect=no" class="mw-redirect" title="User:CatCat/aprilsnarr/22">User:CatCat/aprilsnarr/22</a> to <a href="/User:ApeKattQuest,_MonkeyPython/aprilsnarr/22" title="User:ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython/aprilsnarr/22">User:ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython/aprilsnarr/22</a> Automatically moved page while renaming the user "<a href="/User:CatCat" class="mw-redirect" title="User:CatCat">CatCat</a>" to "<a href="/User:ApeKattQuest,_MonkeyPython" title="User:ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython">ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython</a>"</p>
<p><b>New page</b></p><div>Another year, another update!<br><br />
Just as many of you have noticed that a lot of people have written a lot about these coins/tokens/things, and a lot of people are trying to get you to invest in exactly *their* thing, but should you? no. <br><br />
<br><br />
Not until now! Because...<br><br />
<br />
nft's<br />
<br />
Introducing the new coin! :<br><br />
<center><br />
[[File:coin.png||alt text: nft's are dumb, ya'll!]]roll coin <br></center><br />
This coin is legit guys! It'll never give you up <br><br />
Nor will it let you down when stakes are high <br><br />
All the other nft's run around and try to be cool and stuff, but this coin will never desert you <br><br />
All the various things you read about nft's a will make you cry, and will make you want to say goodbye to your fortune, but not this coin! <br><br />
And honestly I won't tell a lie, because that shit will hurt you. <br><br />
<br />
<br />
So, anyway, what exactly are nfts? No-one can actually explain it, but basically they are non-fungible tokens, so that's tokens that are not fungible. So that means you can't fungibale [sic] them. Also there is something about furi-kuri, anyway to learn more click here [link to a video where someone is singing the funiculi-funicula song ]) <br><br />
<br />
<center>[[File:sopp.png|300px]]<br><br />
[a fungi-ble token]</center><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
And now, pretend this is in french : <br><br />
[[File:ffish.png|400px|flying text, erh I mean fish]] <br><br />
<br />
in french: poisson d'april (april fish) is a rare breed of fish that only comes swimming (flying) this time of year. This fish isn't poisonous, but can be found hiding out in the strangest of places, such as jackets, cd's, bookmarks and in your money! If you see april fish hiding in your jacket pocket know that someone has come and poisson'd you (or make a better french pun), but that's ok! You can just poisson'dem back! <br><br />
<br />
<br />
Anyway, you might be wondering what fish has to do with non-🍄-ble coins, well that's where it comes in: This is how you mine the rollcoin! <br><br />
Yes! by collecting paperfish you can now obtain wast amounts of this exiting new totally-not-a-scam coin! <br><br />
You do that by exchanging fish for coin!, or something, I don't actually know how nft's work, but then again who does!! <br><br />
<br />
So as you see these tokens are non fungible but not non fishable! :D <br><br />
<br />
Were should you fish for? All over, today go out and paste paper fish on everything including animals. You too will be able to put fish tokens in circulation! <br><br />
Soon fishtokens can be mined from your pockets, bags, doors and behind ears! <br><br />
<br><br />
To turn in fishtokens for rollcoins all you have to do is go to this link [link to a rickroll,obvs]<br />
<br />
Happy Fishing! <br><br />
<br />
<br />
<small>just kidding guys, we all know nft's are the cause of the headaches of mayhem</small></div>Reosarevokhttps://wiki.musicbrainz.org/index.php?title=User:CatCat/aprilsnarr&diff=77552&oldid=0User:CatCat/aprilsnarr2024-03-25T07:39:48Z<p><a href="/User:Reosarevok" class="mw-userlink" title="User:Reosarevok"><bdi>Reosarevok</bdi></a> moved page <a href="/index.php?title=User:CatCat/aprilsnarr&redirect=no" class="mw-redirect" title="User:CatCat/aprilsnarr">User:CatCat/aprilsnarr</a> to <a href="/User:ApeKattQuest,_MonkeyPython/aprilsnarr" title="User:ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython/aprilsnarr">User:ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython/aprilsnarr</a> Automatically moved page while renaming the user "<a href="/User:CatCat" class="mw-redirect" title="User:CatCat">CatCat</a>" to "<a href="/User:ApeKattQuest,_MonkeyPython" title="User:ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython">ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython</a>"</p>
<p><b>New page</b></p><div>Our servers are on the move again!<br />
<br />
You might remember that a few years ago we moved all our servers from the US to Europe. Sadly, that has proven too costly* and prone to fires (https://www.datacenterdynamics.com/en/news/ovh-fire-update-four-halls-sbg1-destroyed-well-all-sbg2/), so we have decided our servers will continue their travel east and move to India, where hosting them will be significantly cheaper and cooling can be provided by sun-covering swarms of locusts. Most of the non-slacking members of our dev team are based in India by now anyway, so it feels like the right place!<br />
<br />
As part of our cost-cutting process, and since air travel is not environmentally friendly anyway, we sent our servers East by boat. Unluckily, that means they had to wait their turn for quite a while in the only traffic jam you can see from space (https://www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Images/2021/03/Suez_Canal_traffic_jam_seen_from_space). Luckily that is starting to get resolved now, but it will still take quite a while for the servers to clear the traffic jam, reach their destination and then be located among the twenty thousand containers in the ship carrying them, especially with all other jammed ships arriving at the same time! We're hoping to be done with it all in a couple months though, after which you can hopefully expect a return to our usual (not-particularly-)fast service.<br />
<br />
In the meantime, our whole infrastructure is being hosted on some old servers that our friends at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona donated to us. They claimed they were getting too old for use in a rigorous academic environment, that as we all know in Spain requires systems to work continuously for a few hours every weekday with only a short break for a midday nap. These donated servers are now running from our executive director's basement. Any issues you have noticed recently are solely caused by this (and have nothing to do at all with the skill and attention span of our development team).<br />
<br />
* It could be argued that we should be able to cover the costs given we have had several years of good financial stability by now. While that is true, when we realized that the alternative is to cut costs and spend the savings on fancy ham and beers, the right choice became obvious to us.</div>Reosarevokhttps://wiki.musicbrainz.org/index.php?title=User:CatCat/Work_Formats&diff=77550&oldid=0User:CatCat/Work Formats2024-03-25T07:39:48Z<p><a href="/User:Reosarevok" class="mw-userlink" title="User:Reosarevok"><bdi>Reosarevok</bdi></a> moved page <a href="/index.php?title=User:CatCat/Work_Formats&redirect=no" class="mw-redirect" title="User:CatCat/Work Formats">User:CatCat/Work Formats</a> to <a href="/User:ApeKattQuest,_MonkeyPython/Work_Formats" title="User:ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython/Work Formats">User:ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython/Work Formats</a> Automatically moved page while renaming the user "<a href="/User:CatCat" class="mw-redirect" title="User:CatCat">CatCat</a>" to "<a href="/User:ApeKattQuest,_MonkeyPython" title="User:ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython">ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython</a>"</p>
<p><b>New page</b></p><div>work types: (format) call it "type"<br />
<br />
fictional (skjønnliteratur): BB-404<br />
roman - novel<br />
novelle - short story<br />
poetry - diktsamling<br />
picturebook - chiefly for children, there is no or very little text<br />
screenplay - textual script of a play, movie or series<br />
comic/graphic novel/manga - the distinction from picturebook is several squares of images and text, though it can be difficult to pin-point as there are text-less graphic novels.<br />
<br />
diary? is a diary based book a novel though? a picture book can be a short story...<br />
<br />
<br />
non fiction: (Sakprosa) subject prose (a much better term than "non" fiction). BB-403 <br />
colouringbook/activitybook - books designed to be drawn and written in for amusement and leisure.<br />
artbook - contains depictions and dissertations on art<br />
photobook - contains photos<br />
notebook - contains musical-notation<br />
crafts - books about knitting, embroidery papercraft, etc - almost always contains diagrams and patterns.<br />
educational - faktabøker, many subtypes.<br />
<br />
the diff between art and photo book as a "type" of work is: artbooks are about the work of an artist, ex Dail<br />
a photobook is about the photography of an artist.. this does sound like the same thing after all actually.<br />
probably art and photobooks are the same "type" of work, the diff between these and "picture book" is that in the former the work is *about* the images, where in the latter the images are *part of the work it is in* ie themselves part of the book's work. this is true too of comics.<br />
<br />
pulp<br />
saga/kvad<br />
prosa<br />
eventyr<br />
<br />
<br />
"omnibus" (collected works of (an) author possible most or all)<br />
"collection" (curated selection of works by several authors.)<br />
<br />
<br />
abridged<br />
guided reader/<br />
<br />
<br />
(imho we should brobably *not* separate comics from manga/manwa from "graphic novel" these are all boxes with images and textbubbles. there is indeed some distinction in *genre* of eg Calvin & Hobbes serialised 3ruters setup-delivery-punchline and serialised continuised stories like Attack on Titan or Sandman, but how do these relate?)<br />
Another problem is that comics can be both skjønnliteratur *and* sakprosa<br />
<br />
comic<br />
graphic novel<br />
Comic fanzine: a non-professional and non-official publication produced by enthusiasts of a particular cultural phenomenon (such as a literary or musical genre).<br />
Comic strips: A compilation of comic strips is a sequence of drawings arranged in interrelated panels to display brief humour or form a narrative, often serialized, with text in balloons and captions.<br />
Graphic novel: a fictional story that is presented in comic-strip format and published as a book<br />
Manga: Japanese comic books<br />
Manfra: Franco-Belgian comics inspired by manga.<br />
Manhua: Chinese comics produced in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan<br />
Manhwa: Korean comics<br />
<br />
<br />
non fiction: (Sakprosa) subject prose (a much better term than "non" fiction). BB-403 <br />
it's problematic because how much "fiction" does a magazine contain? history books? an educational book in a language for teaching? (ex: an english book will contain snippets of fiction!)<br />
conversely is a colouringbook fiction or no? and comics can be either. more and more I think of this I feel having distinctions between the two is pointless. see also comic above. additionally it would remove any problems with classifying religious texts as fiction/notfiction.<br />
<br />
informational:<br />
newspaper - monthly, weekly or daily news.<br />
magazine - <br />
journal - scientific journal<br />
biography - book about someone<br />
<br />
educational: <br />
educational - faktabøker<br />
historic - historiebøker<br />
religious - religjøse tekster<br />
- salmebøker<br />
atlas - atlasbøker<br />
school - specifically schoolbooks as opposed to general informational. (skolebøker)<br />
the kind of book o'reilly and "x for dummies" books are<br />
herbaries<br />
flora (some overlap with herbary?)<br />
fauna<br />
heraldry<br />
ancestorial<br />
letters<br />
<br />
crafts - books about knitting, embroidery papercraft, etc - almost always contains diagrams and patterns.<br />
embroidery - brodering(burder være under craft, for du has strikking mm. sigh)<br />
cook book - recepies for making food.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
utility:<br />
manual - technical description or instructions.<br />
map book (separate from atlas as these are were used chiefly as driving and hiking aids)<br />
catalogue (purchasing)<br />
telephonecatalogue (directory)<br />
colletors catalogue - (stamps, coins, etc)<br />
<br />
ordbøker:<br />
dictionary - <br />
encyclopaedia - leksikon<br />
thesaurus - synonymordbok<br />
crossword-book - kryssordbøker<br />

Introduction from [http://www.popsike.com/THAI-RECORDJohnny-Guitar-SHADOW-MUSIC-THAILAND-LP-60s-psych-garage-LP-not-EP/300680118989.html popsike]<br />
<br />
<br />
The music of ''Payong Mukda'', as well as ''Noparatana Tipayaosot'' (a. k. a. ''Johnny Guitar''), was known as "Shadow Music". The term was in reference to the British instrumental band '''The Shadows''', who were quite popular throughout all of Asia. Recordings of this music were often billed as "Thai Modernized Music", taking classic Thai compositions and mixing in elements of surf guitar, a-go-go music and other styles to create an entirely new form of music. Sublime Frequencies' "'''[http://beta.musicbrainz.org/release/b658a4bb-0e9e-4869-b433-3c7fb42eabce Shadow Music of Thailand]'''" compilation features tunes by ''P.M. Pocket Music'', ''The Son of P.M.'', ''P.M.7'', ''Johnny Guitar'' and ''Jupiter''. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
'''SHADOW MUSIC''' was a broad term given to the Thai guitar pop movement of the 1960s and the groups that came out of it, all under the profound influence of early Western rock and roll. British instrumental wonders '''The Shadows''' (as in Cliff Richards & the Shadows) were the origin of the genre's title, also coined 'Wong Shadow' or early Thai 'String' music. Shadow records were often marketed as 'Thai Modernized Music' which it was in the truest sense. Traditional Thai melodies were given the Shadow treatment; incorporating rock, surf, a-go-go, exotica, soul, blues, Latin and other worldly styles of the times. Featured on this collection are a handful of the leading recorded artists from the time; ''P.M. Pocket Music'', ''The Son of P.M.'' Throughout the 1960s, these groups forged a unique and highly self-referential Thai sound. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
'''Shadow Music of Thailand''' is at its most interesting where the mixture is most explicit. ''P.M. Pocket Music'', ''The Son of P.M.'', and a confusing amalgamation called ''P.M.7/Jupiter''. The P.M. groups were named for their manager, ''Payong Mukda'', who kept a cast of musicians recording under different band names. The compiler Mark Gergis tells us that ''Son of P.M.'' employed Mukda's adopted son ''Kabuan'' on keyboard, which means that he's probably the one to the far left of the photograph on Shadow Music's front cover with his hair standing up and his eyes staring at the camera as if it might be coming to get him. As far as musicianship goes, he's not noticeably better or worse than anyone else, so from the modern listener's long perspective this piece of nepotism seems fairly harmless. Young aspiring Thai pop musicians of the 1960s would not have been so sanguine. <br />
<br />
<br />
Johnny Guitar<br />
This band was one of the first Thai guitar bands and they mixed Thai Classical music with Thai popular A go-go music for dancing and listening. T. NOPARATANA was the Leader of Johnny Guitar. He was born in Bangkok, He composed and played Electric Organ. was a member of "Bangkok Blue Band". In 1966 Johnny Guitar released their first record “SUPHAN-NAHONG”. the second Record "LAO CHA REON SRI".<br />

<p><b>New page</b></p><div>= Rebab = <br />
There is a lot of confusion about instruments named [[R*bab|r*bab]], historically "rebab" was a generic named for chiefly bowed string instruments, from this evolved also plucked variant (see rubab), originally arabic, it traveled around the world and became the origin of many stringed instrument-families.<br><br />
<br><br />
There are chiefly 3 large groupings:<br><br />
<br />
* Stick, small soundbox, spike-fiddle bowed family, chiefly south-east asian - from here evolved all kinds of spike fiddles, including such where the spike is vestigial, also south-eastern europe.<br />
** to wit the ghijak [https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q54995817 wd] [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghijak en] [https://musicbrainz.org/instrument/0d766870-3021-47ce-bd51-78d2d2484e1b mb] and the Indonesian Rebab, probably the chinese huquin as well.<br />
* Large, short neck, boat-shaped or indented bowed (but including plucked variant) lutes, chiefly middle-eastern south asian - from here many various folk fiddles, plucked lutes, both of which also inspired evolution of european instruments.<br />
** herein the sarinda, sarangi, esraj, ravaj, among these the guitar and vielle families.<br />
* Medium, varying neck pear-shaped bowed lute, chiefly middle-eastern, european - from here many bowed and plucked families.<br />
** alike kamanche, byzantian lyra, presumably sitar, (thus [[User:CatCat/v*na|vina]]) barbat, oud and the actual lute itself. possibly including such as mandolin and balalaika.<br />

<br />
Or, the workflow of an Instrument Inserter and how to do the job without going crazy, by ApeKattQuest.<br />
<br />
== Basic tools ==<br />
<br />
Hi! If you're here, you probably need to (temporarily or permanently) substitute as the Instrument Inserter. In that case, you'll need to understand how I've organized the whole instrument thing so far, so let's start from the basics:<br />
<br />
The list of all the instruments already in MB is at https://musicbrainz.org/instruments - keep in mind this list does not list aliases, so if an instrument seems not to be there, it can't hurt to search for it using the website search too, just in case it is in the database under another name.<br />
<br />
Instrument requests are tracked in JIRA. We have an INST (instruments) project for that, which you can find at https://tickets.metabrainz.org/projects/INST (you can also check [https://tickets.metabrainz.org/projects/INST/summary/statistics the statistics dashboard] for more detailed links, or [https://tickets.metabrainz.org/projects/INST/issues a list of all issues]).<br />
<br />
I often use [https://tickets.metabrainz.org/projects/INST?selectedItem=com.atlassian.jira.jira-projects-plugin:release-page fix versions] to group tickets more or less thematically and then work on one of them all together.<br />
<br />
I've created a fair amount of filters that I find useful to see subsets of the tickets. To get a list, go to [https://tickets.metabrainz.org/secure/ManageFilters.jspa?filterView=search this search page] and search for owner <u>ApeKattQuest</u><br />
<br />
== Adding and closing instrument tickets ==<br />
<br />
Usually, you will not need to add tickets for things yourself - the community will provide a steady trickle of tickets. Now, while we have the [[How_to_Add_Instruments#How_to_request_an_instrument|documentation]] that explains how to do just that, there will be adders that will not have read it (or understood, or cared) so you'll often get tickets that will need to be improved.<br />
<br />
The Jira system allows setting different types for the tickets. The different types are explained in the documentation above, but basically:<br />
* for new instruments we have "new feature" / "sub-new feature"<br />
* for tickets that require updating or changing, description or adding aliases we have "improvement" / "sub-improvement"<br />
* for actual errors we have "bug"<br />
* "task" is rarely used but it can occasionally be useful for large unspecific things like "research the difference between these concepts" or "translate this wiki page"<br />
<br />
If we have several very related tickets (such as different instruments for a specific instrument family) I usually create a "mini-version" type ticket to collect them, with the related tickets linked as sub-tickets of that.<br />
<br />
Once you're done with a ticket (whether you've done what it asks for or decided you should not), it should be closed. You will need to select a resolution:<br />
<br />
* for fixed finished tickets, close as "fixed" and add a comment with a link to the finished instrument if adding a new one or a description of what has been done (e.g. "added all aliases and fixed description"). Also, if adding a new instrument, link to the ticket from the edit note so that they are connected in both ways.<br />
* for tickets that are duplicates, close as "duplicate", point to the one we already have in a comment, and add a Jira duplicate link too. Recently I've also been upping the priority of still-open tickets which receive duplicates, since that suggests multiple people want it.<br />
* for tickets which you have decided will not be added (usually novelty instruments and the like), close as "won't fix" with a comment explaining why and a link to the appropriate guideline.<br />
* if the ticket does not have enough information and a search on the internet has yielded no usable information, close it as "incomplete" - these can always be reopened if someone has more information and adds it!<br />
* in situations where something is totally not actionable by the Instrument Inserter (for example because it's just not an instrument ticket at all), close it as "invalid". (This doesn't happen very often and even then the ticket should probably instead be *moved* to the appropriate project rather than being closed).<br />
<br />
=== A little bit about fix versions ===<br />
<br />
As mentioned above, for each new group of related tickets I want to work on I make a "fix version". Mine always have some silly name because I'm easily amused and life's too short not to be silly; it's up to you whether to continue the tradition or not. For example, my second batch of Māori instruments is in the "Taonga puortwo" version.<br />
<br />
There's also a few versions that have no tickets and are only used in "affects versions" on tickets. They are "Strings 'n' Things (...(formerly just Strings))" and "Instruments IV: Electric Boogaloo". They might get repurposed or deleted in the future, but for now you can just ignore them.<br />
<br />
You'll also notice a couple of GCI versions, named with parentheses, which are usually combined with another version on tickets. These were related to the (now defunct) Google Code-In program, in which high school students from around the world helped us (among other things) to research tickets and improve our instrument coverage.<br />
<br />
A version shouldn't be officially marked as released until all tickets in it are done. This can take a long time: the largest version by far, "Ensemble This!", was started in 2018 and is yet to be finished at this time. <!--\\and was finished in ($date) the reason for this delay was the same as all other delays worldwide in the years 20-22.--><br />
<br />
=== A little bit about components ===<br />
<br />
Components are used to indicate which kind of instrument the ticket is about. As such, there are components for string, wind & percussion instruments, an "ensemble/family" component for instrument groupings, and finally "electric" and "electronic". "electronic" is for instruments that work with digital audio signals (such a synthesizer keyboard), while "electric" is for things that have been electrified (such a piano with pickups) and is therefore ''always'' used together with another component.<br />
There's also a "modify existing instrument" component, which should be self-explanatory.<br />
<br />
=== A little bit about labels ===<br />
Labels are used to add "tags" to tickets that wouldn't fit a version nor a component. They are shared between projects, so be careful about creating these because they'll also appear for everyone else using JIRA.<br />
* "GCI" was set on tickets we thought would be interesting for Google Code-in students. Quite a few instruments have this label.<br />
* "Extensive research" was created specifically for instrument tickets, and it marks the ones where a short research process is not enough to close the ticket. These are **difficult** instrument tickets.<br />
<br />
== Researching instruments ==<br />
<br />
If the ticket is not obviously un-actionable, it will now be the time to research it. This is my general process for that:<br />
<br />
To begin with, usually the ticket will have a Wikipedia link. I start by following that and reading the article, and possibly also reading the Swedish/Danish/Norwegian Wikipedia articles as well if they exist (replace those with whatever languages you happen to speak, but the general idea is that sometimes different Wikipedia articles provide different information and sources).<br />
<br />
I will then do a DuckDuckGo search for the instrument to see what I can find, as well as following any other links in the ticket.<br />
<br />
Additionally, I have a set of resources I almost always check.<br />
<br />
For string instruments especially (which at least as of 2022 are the most common group of instruments requested as INST tickets):<br />
<br />
* http://www.atlasofpluckedinstruments.com/<br />
* http://stringedinstrumentdatabase.aornis.com/t.htm<br />
<br />
Wikipedia, of course, even if not linked from the article.<br />
<br />
Oxford Music Online (http://oxfordmusiconline.com/) which while is usually a paid resource, I have full access thanks to the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:The_Wikipedia_Library Wikipedia Library]] (https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/). (the reason this was granted me was that I ''also'' work to create and improve wikidata items about instruments, but how this is done is definitely out of scope for this article.)<br />
<br />
MIMO (the Musical Instruments Museum Online, https://mimo-international.com/MIMO/search.aspx), which is a consortium aggregating musical instrument data from museums all over Europe and also maintains the Hornbostel–Sachs classification of instruments.<br />
<br />
There are also countless blogs and other websites that have specialist info, such as https://chandrakantha.com/music-and-dance/instrumental-music/indian-instruments/ for Indian instruments.<br />
<br />
Finally, there are the IROM sites, where you can sometimes find images (that we can use in MusicBrainz, there's a section further down just for that). Someone who speaks Japanese could possibly get additional info from the pages as well as the images.<br />
<br />
* https://saisaibatake.ame-zaiku.com/gakki/a-musical_instruments.html<br />
* https://digitalstamp.suppa.jp/musical_instruments_a/index.html<br />
* https://graphic.nobody.jp/<br />
<br />
<br />
Then I have some offline sources I also make use of; if you have to replace me, I'd suggest trying to get your hands on some of them! Your library might have a copy (since my library is where I got most of them):<br />
<br />
* The excellent "The New Grove Encyclopedia of Musical Instruments I-III", 1984 edition<br />
* "The History of Musical Instruments" by Curt Sachs (only borrowed from library)<br />
* "Percussion Instruments and Their History" by James Blades (for percussion instruments, an excellent book that I've gotten from the library and I wish I owned!)<br />
* "Taonga pūoro: Singing Treasures (The Musical Instruments of the Māori)" by Brian Flintoff (when working on Māori instruments I borrowed this book from the library several times, (it has an [[https://musicbrainz.org/release/a9cf5c54-7bd0-4fc5-af24-0651251835ba accompanying music CD]], which of course has been added to MusicBrainz ;) - another book I wish I owned)<br />
<br />
Else I just see what books on the specific topic I'm looking into are available at the library and borrow them. I also go through https://www-jstor-org.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/action/doBasicSearch?Query=SEARCH (and, sometimes, other less-reputable sources of scholarly articles) searching for any article or book on the topic that could also help. For example, while trying to piece together how ancient Indian string instruments connect to each other, I searched extensively for these "[[User:CatCat/v*na|Veena]]" instruments in all these sources.<br />
<br />
== How to determine if a ticket is not actionable? ==<br />
<br />
A ticket can be not actionable because:<br />
<br />
* it has insufficient information, calls for more information have not yielded any result in a fair amount of time and searching in the ways explained above has found nothing good enough -> close as"incomplete".<br />
* it is a duplicate -> close with the appropriate resolution as explained above.<br />
* it is a valid ticket, but not an instrument ticket -> move to the appropriate project (such as MBS for MusicBrainz bugs).<br />
* it is spam -> report to a JIRA admin (if in doubt, report it in #metabrainz on IRC).<br />
* it is a valid instrument or issue, but nothing can be done right now because something else is blocking it, such as an implementation detail (such as [https://tickets.metabrainz.org/browse/MBS-9642 MBS-9642] blocking [https://tickets.metabrainz.org/browse/INST-658 INST-658]) -> set the status as "blocked" with an explanatory comment.<br />
<br />
Which leaves then the difficult last case, "it is an instrument, but it's not reasonable or useful to add it to MusicBrainz". Whether this is the case often needs to be decided on a case by case basis, but in general the logic for deciding this has been outlined in https://wiki.musicbrainz.org/How_to_Add_Instruments#Not_to_be_added_as_instruments (which was written specifically in order to have a document that describes the rationale for inclusion/non-inclusion).<br />
<br />
In general, any instrument that seems to be exclusive to a specific artist (a "signature move", to borrow a Pokémon term) is likely to be too much of a novelty for inclusion.<br />
<br />
If after reading this the right decision still seems unclear, then as mentioned it will just come down to your own judgement! As you can see from the document, all the cases have exceptions and counter arguments, because nothing is ever actually that clear in the music world!<br />
<br />
So what I've usually done when in doubt is to just ask other people in the team or the rest of the community for their point of view, chiefly reosarevok as the style leader, sometimes Freso or yvanzo for things that they might know more about, such as folk instruments.<br />
<br />
Reaching out to the community to get specific opinions, research help and translation help for useful sources in languages you can't read can be very rewarding! (we have a fairly international community so if you're not sure who speaks the language you need, just ask around on IRC or on the forums, and often you'll find help. Hopefully we will keep attracting more and more people from all around the world who can help with this in the future - yet another reason why it is important to make MusicBrainz easy to use by everyone!)<br />
<br />
However keep in mind that the community is mostly comprised of volunteers with their own interests, and sometimes even a simple question which from your point of view seems to be simple to answer can turn into a long discussion that might not even answer the question. It's always worth engaging with the community, but try not to get too discouraged if you end up not getting any useful answer. Remember that anything can always be edited if an answer arrives way later when you were no longer expecting it.<br />
<br />
== What to do when two (or more) sources contradict each other ==<br />
<br />
If there is ''one'' source contradicting several others:<br />
* unless it is very reputable, ignore it.<br />
* if it is reputable and the others may in fact be all following one or a few not so reputable original source(s), go with the contradicting source (but be discerning).<br />
<br />
If two reputable sources contradict each other (also applicable if more sources do, but they seem based on these two reputable ones):<br />
* if a piece of information seems like it might be variable (rather than wrong in one case), try to combine the info (e.g. if one source says 4 strings and the other says 6, write "4-6 strings").<br />
* try finding a third reputable independent source and see what it says. It might clarify why the two seem to disagree. Sometimes sources can be a bit like the telephone game: in different places different bits of info are given different weight, and then when the whole story gets retold with omissions, you eventually get results that seemingly contradict each other.<br />
* if it is an openly known fact that there are several leading ideas that contradict each other, try to include both in your description.<br />
<br />
* if all sources list conflicting information, just omit it entirely. It is better to omit unclear information than to perpetuate wrong data.<br />
<br />
* if a Western and a native source disagree, go with the native source.<br />
* check what other language Wikipedias say, and investigate their sources. It might be a translation error. You can ask for help with translations, or use machine translation if needed.<br />
<br />
In the end, if it is still unclear, simply write "it is unclear if", since this is literally true.<br />
<br />
== What makes a source reputable? ==<br />
Reputable sources:<br />
* in general academic, sourced, researched stuff is good for (Western) musical instruments.<br />
* hobbyist blogs that are written by people with a passion for whatever you are looking into; often this will be your best bet with native and non-Western instruments (if only reading in English, in the native languages there is often academic, sourced, researched data as well).<br />
* reputable data can come from surprising places, like a Reddit thread or blog. Never assume that hobbyists don't know what they're talking about; if possible engage with them and ask more. Naturally be discerning in any case!<br />
<br />
Unreputable sources:<br />
* sites that *sell* instruments (unless data also matches other better sources).<br />
* wikis (including Wikipedia, but specially smaller ones like Fandom), are not a great main source. Disregard them unless they link to better, reputable sources.<br />
* be on the lookout for badly written text; while it *might* just be badly translated or written by a non-native, it often also means the data is less reputable.<br />
<br />
------------------<br />
<br />
== How to (actually) add an instrument ==<br />
<br />
The link to add instruments is in the "Admin" dropdown at the rightmost of the user menus. Or you can just go to https://musicbrainz.org/instrument/create directly.<br />
<br />
[[File:add_instrument.png]]<br><br />
The "Add instrument" screen<br />
<br />
<br />
Once you're done researching and have enough data, it's time to create the instrument. You'll want to put together a disambiguation and a description.<br />
* The '''name''' should always be in lowercase, unless an actual proper noun is part of it (e.g. "Saraswati veena", "French horn", "Rhodes piano"). Do not include anything ''but'' the name (even if there's other instruments with the same name). For that we have better fields:<br />
* The '''disambiguation''' should be as short and clear as possible. It should just contain the main idea of what makes the instrument different from others. As such, include where and/or when it was used, what it is made of, and some other defining qualities: if the neck is short write "short-necked", if it is goblet shaped write "goblet drum"... Just combine all this to create the disambiguation: examples could be "Namibian short-necked lute" or "ancient cedarwood goblet drum" or "double-reed brass used in western orchestra", etc.<br />
* The '''type''' is one of "Percussion" (membranophones, in here also idiophones), "Wind" (aerophones), "String" (chordophones), "Electronic" (electrophones), as well as "Family", "Ensemble" and "Other". The choice should usually be obvious.<br />
* The '''description''' is where the majority of your research results. Try to use as few helper conjugations as possible, don't repeat the name of the instrument, be concise and get to the point as fast as possible. As an example: "Used in traditional dance and religious ceremony, its 40 cm long, heavily decorated bamboo soundbox has 3-4 metal strings plucked by bone plectrum."<br />
<br />
In the '''Relationships''' section you can connect the instrument to other entities in MusicBrainz:<br />
<br />
* Area: linking the instrument to the area(s) where it is from. You can also use relationship credits for historical place names and instrument names.<br />
* Artist / Label: if it was invented by a person or company, add this relationship. Try to find the invention year and list it on the relationship. It is acceptable to add a new artist or company/label for the inventor(s) of an instrument. (Note: due to limitations in the way MusicBrainz works, it is currently possible for regular users to add this relationship from the ''artist or label side'', and they will sometimes erroneously use this when trying to say that an artist ''plays'' an instrument, since such a relationship does not exist yet. However, happily there are users patrolling and reverting such edits, and so fast that you almost never have to do that yourself!)<br />
* Instrument: <br />
** '''children''' is an obsolete type from before we had more specific ones. If you see it, try to change it to something more specific:<br />
** '''[https://musicbrainz.org/relationship/5ee4568f-d8bd-321d-9426-0ff6819ae6b5 part of/consists of]''' is to be used if this instrument is part of an ensemble or a family. (see below for details on this)<br />
** '''[https://musicbrainz.org/relationship/deaf1d50-e624-3069-91bd-88e51cafd605 derived from/derivations]''' is to be used if this instrument is derived, developed, based on or evolved from of another instrument. For example, the electric violin is derived from the violin.<br />
** '''related instruments/related to''' is kind of obsolete as well, since it doesn't specify ''how'' two instruments are related. But if this is all you can find out, it's probably better than nothing, but if you know and we don't have a relationship for it yet, consider requesting that to be added instead (with a STYLE ticket in JIRA).<br />
** '''[https://musicbrainz.org/relationship/2f522cbc-46f9-409b-9957-d0308d0899ef hybrid of/has hybrids]''' is to be used if this instrument is a combination of other instruments. Sometimes an artist will get an idea to combine the body of one instrument with the mouthpiece or some other mechanism of another, for example. Be sure to only add hybrids that are reasonably established, rather than novelties, however!<br />
** '''[https://musicbrainz.org/relationship/40b2bd3f-1457-3ceb-810d-57f87f0f74f0 type of/subtypes]''' is the most common instrument relationship and the basis of our instrument tree: e.g. "talharpa" is a type of "bowed lyre" which is a type of "bowed string instruments" which is a type of "string instruments".<br />
<br />
Finally, the '''External Links''' section is where you should paste the Wikidata link, the image link for IROM/StaticBrainz (see the related section below) and any very interesting sites that look stable. It is permissible (and encouraged!) to create Wikidata items for instruments that do not have them (but their creation is out of the scope of this guide).<br />
<br />
In the '''edit note''' you should enter a link to the JIRA ticket, and any interesting/unusual extra comments you have, if needed (which has been up to now uncommon, but can become much more useful in the future.).<br />
<br />
<br />
=== A little bit about families and ensembles ===<br />
<br />
As mentioned above, the '''part of/consists of''' relationship is mostly used for families and ensembles. <br />
<br />
'''Families''' are a more "fuzzy" type of instrument. For example, the "lute family" encompasses most necked string instruments. A family can itself contain a family ("lute family" contains "guitar family"), although this can lead to some problematic overlap with "type of".<br />
<br />
Ensembles are a lot more defined. These are standard groupings with mostly defined components, such as "string quartet", or combination of instruments like "pipe & tabor", "guban" or "samba drums". This includes even large groupings, such as a western orchestra or a gamelan.<br />
<br />
This relationship can have two attributes: '''optional''' and '''amount'''. These are both used for ensembles. "Amount" can be used to indicate e.g. that a [[instrument:708c6d50-c768-4f93-a5c7-b41fb3cf029f|string quartet]] consists of 2 violins, 1 viola and 1 cello. "Optional" can be used to indicate that e.g. a [[instrument:d2385a89-bb39-4316-b562-27b2c19ff531|string quintet]] consists of 2 violins and other three string instruments which can vary: 1 or 2 violas, 1 or 2 cellos, and optionally a double bass.<br />
<br />
More attributes can be requested if needed.<br />
<br />
<br />
Press "Enter edit!" and we're done! Yay!<br />
<br />
<br />
Well, actually not ''quite'', because there is still:<br />
<br />
== A little bit about aliases ==<br />
<br />
Aliases help users find and use the correct instruments whatever the language of their source, so we want to have as many as we can. Generally I will start by checking the Wikidata list of names for an instrument (which most commonly means "the names used by the Wikipedia pages in every available language"). I will also add other actual aliases written on that Wikidata page (in the "Also known as" column). Additionally, some Wikipedia pages will sometimes have more names in their article text that haven't been copied to Wikidata (usually the first or second sentence includes them in bold and/or italics). I will include these (provided they don't duplicate any actual language names) as "search hint".<br />
<br />
Then I will add any extra names/spellings from Grove or Oxford Dictionary (or any other source) as an alias too (often as "instrument name").<br />
<br />
For aliases in a script other than Latin I make an exception on the general alias guidelines, and follow the common practice for ''artist'' names and sort names instead. That is, for the alias name I use the original script, but for the sort name I use a Latin transliteration. This makes it easier for me to see what an alias is, and the connection between original and transliterated names. It does have some issues however, since it means aliases won't sort according to how the language in question (for example, Japanese names should probably use Hiragana instead of Latin) should be sorted. Once it is possible to list aliases as transliterations, I will change the format and try to use the actual script's sort name. <!-- it's worth noting also, that currently sort names of aliases do ''nothing!'' the list of aliases will sort on language code no matter what. (this should be fixed) --><br />
<br />
In addition, there are a few number of languages for which we ''have'' no Locale - in these cases I will write the lowercase name of it in parentheses in the sortname. It should be possible to programmatically move these to the right place should these locales be added in the future.<br />
<br />
For actually adding the aliases I use [https://github.com/loujine/musicbrainz-scripts/blob/master/mb-edit-add_aliases.user.js a script that loujin created per my request]. This allows me to submit several aliases at the same time; since some of the more well documented instruments can have over 20 aliases + alternate names, it is an indispensable tool to avoid spending hours adding aliases.<br />
<br />
== A little bit about image (IROM) extraction ==<br />
<br />
Since we [[https://blog.metabrainz.org/2019/06/25/we-were-sued-by-a-copyright-troll-and-we-prevailed/|can no longer]] use Wikimedia Commons images to illustrate entities, we looked into possibilities and found a Japanese illustrator named IROM who is an enthusiast of musical instruments and makes all their illustrations free for reuse. We store the ones we want to use on GitHub in the repository [https://github.com/metabrainz/irombook-instrument-images irombook-instrument-images].<br />
<br />
IROM has a set of websites with often somewhat different information (and sometimes different images):<br />
<br />
* https://saisaibatake.ame-zaiku.com/gakki/index.html<br />
* https://digitalstamp.suppa.jp/musical_instruments_r/index.html (in English but older)<br />
* https://graphic.nobody.jp/illustrations/index.html (which usually has images of people playing instruments rather than just the instruments alone, but these are better than nothing if you can't find anything else)<br />
<br />
In addition there are blogs like:<br />
<br />
* https://gakki5.blogspot.com/ (see the links also)<br />
* https://animal.tyabo.com/musical_instruments/2string_instruments.html<br />
* https://irom-gakki.blogspot.com/search/label/%E3%82%AE%E3%82%BF%E3%83%BC?updated-max=2010-03-25T13:00:00%2B09:00&max-results=20&start=20&by-date=false<br />
<br />
Usually saisaibatake will have the best images, but occasionally digitalstamp will surprise you. And at times graphic.nobody will have pages that will *link* to a page (on saisaibatake) that is different than the usual one.<br />
Additionally, there's also [https://digitalstamp.suppa.jp/musical_instruments-chordophone/bowed_strings.html a list of string instrument images without people playing them], and [https://animal.tyabo.com/musical_instruments/1string_instruments.html another, older one].<br />
<br />
I strongly recommend installing [https://github.com/Arnie97/katakana-terminator katakana-terminator] in order to be able to see more quickly what things are on IROM's sites (unless you can easily read kana, of course).<br />
<br />
In general, I go with the largest, clearest and cleanest image. The saisaibatake page for an instrument will sometimes have more images, and clicking on the main image will usually get you to an /instrument2 page that ''may'' have other images. Sometimes there is even a ''third'' page obtainable by clicking the image on the second page, and if there's more than one image on any of these pages, do always check every one of them, as they may contain even more links!<br />
<br />
I also take the icon in front of the instrument name as seen in the sidebar and the [https://saisaibatake.ame-zaiku.com/gakki/r-musical_instruments.html dictionary pages], to also upload it as a separate icon image. Finally, it can be beneficial to also have an image of a person playing the instrument, especially if any other image if the instrument is older or not as descriptive (or if the playing of the instrument itself is interesting, e.g. keytar).<br />
<br />
You can upload the instrument images yourself, or contact a member of the team for it (reosarevok is a good bet if around). Images uploaded to the [https://github.com/metabrainz/irombook-instrument-images irombook-instrument-images repository] are automatically made available as static PNG files for MusicBrainz use on the domain https://staticbrainz.org/irombook/ - you'll want to upload them to folders for the instrument and name them following the convention below to get images in the format https://staticbrainz.org/irombook/$instrumentname/$instrumentname_(possible_variation).png<br />
<br />
example<br />
* [https://staticbrainz.org/irombook/cello/cello.png https://staticbrainz.org/irombook/cello/cello.png] (main image, shares the folder name)<br />
* [https://staticbrainz.org/irombook/hardingfele/hardingfele_alt.png https://staticbrainz.org/irombook/hardingfele/hardingfele_alt.png] (alternate image, with ''_alt'')<br />
* [https://staticbrainz.org/irombook/keytar/keytar_player.png https://staticbrainz.org/irombook/keytar/keytar_player.png] (player image, with ''_player'')<br />
* [https://staticbrainz.org/irombook/xylophone/icon.png https://staticbrainz.org/irombook/xylophone/icon.png] (icon, just named ''icon'')<br />
* [https://staticbrainz.org/irombook/ngoni/ngoni_donso.png https://staticbrainz.org/irombook/ngoni/ngoni_donso.png] (a subtype stored in the same folder)<br />
* [https://staticbrainz.org/irombook/cabasa/cabaça.png https://staticbrainz.org/irombook/cabasa/cabaça.png] (a somewhat different, but closely related instrument stored in the same folder)<br />
<br />
As seen above, sometimes a related instrument should just be in the same folder as that one. Use your own judgement to decide when to split or keep together. It often makes sense to keep instruments of a close family (like ngoni, kacapi, etc.) in the same folder, unless they're very well known and would be expected to be separate (violin/viola/cello). Replace spaces in the names with underscores, but use hyphens if they are part of the name itself. If in doubt, ask reosarevok to do a quick check to make sure the choice makes sense.<br />
<br />
== How to deal with community friction ==<br />
<br />
How to deal with community friction when decisions that you are sure are better for the data lead to arguments and complaints about how a specific instrument should or should not have been added, or a name is better than another, or a change will make it harder to add instrument performer relationships?<br />
<br />
* First thing, don't panic or get angry! People can have different opinions and that does not mean anything against you personally (unless you get personal attacks, which you should always report to the community manager).<br />
* Don't just "give in" and give the people what they (think) they want and compromise data, unless you become convinced that you made a mistake.<br />
* Learn to walk away and ignore toxic people and arguments; don't engage with toxic arguments if you can at all avoid them.<br />
* Always listen to constructive opinions and do reconsider your choices, but try to always get a third person's opinion about the issue before you make a decision to change your original choice to make sure you're not just doing it to avoid the situation.<br />
* Simultaneously, don't be haughty and think you always know best, even if you are a specialist or have a doctorate in instruments there is always room for more knowledge and points of view!<br />
<br />
== In closing ==<br />
<br />
I've learned a lot about instruments in my years as the Instrument Inserter, and I'm still learning every time I look into some new ticket. If you're now in charge of instrument insertion for a while, or even permanently, you're probably going to learn a lot of stuff too! (even if you're already an expert on musical instruments, you're still going to probably learn a lot!). Try to have fun with it, not get too frustrated with the most challenging or annoying bits, and don't forget that you don't have to do it all on your own; the team and the community are there to help, at least most of the time!<br />

url relationship to mb:<br />
when an author(bb) is related to an artist(mb), married or family<br />
when a bb work is related to an mb work: is the same, is the poem/prose/etc song is based on<br />
when bb work is *about* an mb artist : biography, dissertation paper, etc.<br />
when a mb work (song) is about a bb work (book) or bb author (person), or even bb publicist<br />
<br />
(eventually we will need a VB (videobrainz) set of links too, in-fact that would prove most benefactory when it comes to adaptations of bb works into movies)<br />
<br />
(personally I would also want an GB (gamebrainz) where games can e *based on* a bb work¹ and have music from a mb work)<br />

work types: (format) call it "type"<br />
<br />
fictional (skjønnliteratur): BB-404<br />
roman - novel<br />
novelle - short story<br />
poetry - diktsamling<br />
picturebook - chiefly for children, there is no or very little text<br />
screenplay - textual script of a play, movie or series<br />
comic/graphic novel/manga - the distinction from picturebook is several squares of images and text, though it can be difficult to pin-point as there are text-less graphic novels.<br />
<br />
diary? is a diary based book a novel though? a picture book can be a short story...<br />
<br />
<br />
non fiction: (Sakprosa) subject prose (a much better term than "non" fiction). BB-403 <br />
colouringbook/activitybook - books designed to be drawn and written in for amusement and leisure.<br />
artbook - contains depictions and dissertations on art<br />
photobook - contains photos<br />
notebook - contains musical-notation<br />
crafts - books about knitting, embroidery papercraft, etc - almost always contains diagrams and patterns.<br />
educational - faktabøker, many subtypes.<br />
<br />
the diff between art and photo book as a "type" of work is: artbooks are about the work of an artist, ex Dail<br />
a photobook is about the photography of an artist.. this does sound like the same thing after all actually.<br />
probably art and photobooks are the same "type" of work, the diff between these and "picture book" is that in the former the work is *about* the images, where in the latter the images are *part of the work it is in* ie themselves part of the book's work. this is true too of comics.<br />
<br />
pulp<br />
saga/kvad<br />
prosa<br />
eventyr<br />
<br />
<br />
"omnibus" (collected works of (an) author possible most or all)<br />
"collection" (curated selection of works by several authors.)<br />
<br />
<br />
abridged<br />
guided reader/<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
comic<br />
graphic novel<br />
<br />
<br />
non fiction: (Sakprosa) subject prose (a much better term than "non" fiction).
<br />
informational:<br />
newspaper - monthly, weekly or daily news.<br />
magazine - <br />
journal - scientific journal<br />
biography - book about someone<br />
<br />
educational: <br />
educational - faktabøker<br />
historic - historiebøker<br />
religious - religjøse tekster<br />
- salmebøker<br />
atlas - atlasbøker<br />
school - specifically schoolbooks as opposed to general informational. (skolebøker)<br />
the kind of book o'reilly and "x for dummies" books are<br />
herbaries<br />
flora (some overlap with herbary?)<br />
fauna<br />
heraldry<br />
ancestorial<br />
letters<br />
<br />
crafts - books about knitting, embroidery papercraft, etc - almost always contains diagrams and patterns.<br />
embroidery - brodering(burder være under craft, for du has strikking mm. sigh)<br />
cook book - recepies for making food.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
utility:<br />
manual - technical description or instructions.<br />
map book (separate from atlas as these are were used chiefly as driving and hiking aids)<br />
catalogue (purchasing)<br />
telephonecatalogue (directory)<br />
colletors catalogue - (stamps, coins, etc)<br />
<br />
ordbøker:<br />
dictionary - <br />
encyclopaedia - leksikon<br />
thesaurus - synonymordbok<br />
crossword-book - kryssordbøker<br />

right now we can not link editions from a publisher. we can add new ones, but if you want to give an existing edition a publisher you have to go to the edition to do it (ie, can't mass-link editions to a publisher)<br />

FAQ:<br />
<br />
"When to use work "Illustrator" and "Photographer" relationships and when to use edition relationship.<br />
<br />
Simply, ask yourself this question: "If I remove or change the illustrations/photographs, does this book still make sense?"<br />
If the answer is yes, use Author-Edition. If no, use Author-Work.<br />
<br />
= Extended =<br />
Use work if:<br />
* There is no text<br />
* The text is predominantly discussing the images<br />
* The work is about the artist<br />
<br />
Use Edition if:<br />
* There is only a few images or just the cover of the book<br />
* Removing the images has no impact on the logic of the text in the book<br />
* Replacing images with different ones has no impact on the logic of the text in the book</div>Reosarevokhttps://wiki.musicbrainz.org/index.php?title=User:CatCat/BB_Formats&diff=77514&oldid=0User:CatCat/BB Formats2024-03-25T07:39:43Z<p><a href="/User:Reosarevok" class="mw-userlink" title="User:Reosarevok"><bdi>Reosarevok</bdi></a> moved page <a href="/index.php?title=User:CatCat/BB_Formats&redirect=no" class="mw-redirect" title="User:CatCat/BB Formats">User:CatCat/BB Formats</a> to <a href="/User:ApeKattQuest,_MonkeyPython/BB_Formats" title="User:ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython/BB Formats">User:ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython/BB Formats</a> Automatically moved page while renaming the user "<a href="/User:CatCat" class="mw-redirect" title="User:CatCat">CatCat</a>" to "<a href="/User:ApeKattQuest,_MonkeyPython" title="User:ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython">ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython</a>"</p>

These could be topmost,. then possibly we can have sub-options or similar, so that something like "pocketbook" or "softback" are subs of paperback, meaning that if you do not know it is better to chose paperback and be less specific, than to chose pocket and be wrong.<br />
<br />
Suggestions?<br />
<br />
<br />
* hardback (glued/sewn, paper/vellum?)<br />
* paperback<br />
* spiralbound<br />
* booklet/magazine/digest (it may have a spine)<br />
* paper/newspaper/pamphlet (any distinction between glossy/non glossy?)<br />
* audiobook (physical or digital)<br />
* scroll/parchment <br />
* stone/clay tablet<br />
<br />
* non-bound/unregular/loose pages<br />
<br />
* other<br />
<br />
should we make a distinction between sewn(ie hardback) and glued (ie boardbook)<br />
<br />

| Manuscript<br />
| traditionally, any document that is written by hand. modernly, any written, typed, etc, copy of the author's work, distinguished from the printed version.(seems the only distinction between incunable/manuscript is printed/handwritten, the modern idea creates problems)<br />
it maybe a codex(bound), or it may be a scroll<br />
the diffe between scroll and codex seems to be the bounding of codices then.<br />
paper, vellum, papyrus. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manuscript<br />
Manuscript seems a very broad general, perhaps more suitable as a tag than a type of format, given that <br />
manuscripts can *be* other types "...may be a codex or a scroll"<br />

| Board Book <br />
| kids books printed on cardboard-type material "paperboard".<br />
|-<br />
| Padded Baby Book <br />
| distinction between "padded" or "hard/soft/board" back though? I can only imagine crossover/gradient will be common.<br />
|-<br />
| Pop-Up Book (I would prefer Interactive book) <br />
| interesting, but, I've seen both hardback and boardbooks with this ability. the norwegian term is "utbrettsbok" (folding out book). the "animated book" (Livre animé) of french is also a nice term. I'm unsure if this is "its own thing". I think something can be *both* hardback and interactive, etc. Hell I even own greeting-cards that are somewhat like this. <br />
|-<br />
! multiple media<br />
|-<br />
| colspan="2" | my gut instinct here is to a) link it to mb, b) each "type of medium" is "It's Own Thing"™ so we need no "combo format". if we eventually have "types of audio format" and "multi medium editions" as on mb, this solves itself. For now, I think we ignore "additional (non-book) things attached to editions", and leave that info for annotations.<br />

|-<br />
| Stamped/Die Cut Stories <br />
| Die-cutting is a printing process for cutting shapes in a material. It allows publishers to insert a 'window' into a book's dust jacket, or a page or pages, or even a slipcase. [https://pictures.abebooks.com/inventory/21789296890_4.jpg example]<br />
|-<br />
| Club Edition <br />
| Also known as Book Club Edition (BCE) or Book of the Month Club Edition (BOMC). Printed by a “book club”, usually with cheaper materials than the original publisher. Generally not priced, may have a blank box where barcode usually appears. The name of the book club can often be found on the copyright page.<br />
|-<br />
| Flexibound <br />
| A “flexibound” binding is a flexible cover that is thicker than a typical paperback and extends beyond the page edges. It is intermediate between the traditional “paperback” and “hardcover” styles, and many sellers simply list it as one of those categories, causing some confusion.<br />
|-<br />
| Promo <br />
| Used for promotional material, like guides, flyers, pre-publication samplers.<br />
|-<br />
| Journal <br />
| A periodical or magazine based around a specific topic, could be academic, medical, etc.<br />
Not to be confused with a diary style of journal (this would be a genre rather than format). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journal<br />
|-<br />
| BARD Cartridge <br />
| Abbreviation of Braille and Audio Reading Download service. Digital audio recording of books that can be transferred to a USB cartridge and played on a Digital Talking Book Machine (DTMB).<br />
|-<br />
| Sheet Music <br />
| Handwritten or printed musical notation that uses musical symbols to indicate the pitches (melodies), rhythms or chords of a song or instrumental musical piece. Does this deserve to be a separate physical format?<br />
|-<br />

| seems to be not a physical "format"<br />

In the U.K., there are A-format, B-format, and the largest C-format sizes." so these are "market specific formats" the differences between them are minimal. I think they might be used as sub-types, but given that the same thing will be defined differently in different markets, this is also problematic (also we should not be US-centric (or any other market for that matter) but defining our formats 1:1 with their definitions.<br />

<br />
<br />
formats of electronic books basically falls into the same holes as digital formats of music: <br />
we have format types, mobi, epub, pdf, etc, which is irrelevant as usually they're either available as several or, they can be converted.<br />
we have distribution channels: amazon, archive, ebooks etc, which can vary from the exact same file to completely unique per platform.<br />
we have no actual physical borders to lean on so the size, format and even page numbers (see community post) are irrelevant.<br />
<br />
the only separation I'd make between "digitals" is if it's words or audio (ie audiobook)<br />
<br />
<br />
finally, what to do with tactiles, ie braille books?<br />
gut instinct tells me this should be a separate category.</div>Reosarevokhttps://wiki.musicbrainz.org/index.php?title=User:CatCat/ARTreeReArrangement&diff=77512&oldid=0User:CatCat/ARTreeReArrangement2024-03-25T07:39:43Z<p><a href="/User:Reosarevok" class="mw-userlink" title="User:Reosarevok"><bdi>Reosarevok</bdi></a> moved page <a href="/index.php?title=User:CatCat/ARTreeReArrangement&redirect=no" class="mw-redirect" title="User:CatCat/ARTreeReArrangement">User:CatCat/ARTreeReArrangement</a> to <a href="/User:ApeKattQuest,_MonkeyPython/ARTreeReArrangement" title="User:ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython/ARTreeReArrangement">User:ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython/ARTreeReArrangement</a> Automatically moved page while renaming the user "<a href="/User:CatCat" class="mw-redirect" title="User:CatCat">CatCat</a>" to "<a href="/User:ApeKattQuest,_MonkeyPython" title="User:ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython">ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython</a>"</p>

* I used the "has additional guest other vocal performed by" AR but I feel it is wrong. Is there something like a "contains speech of another artist" AR? [http://bugs.musicbrainz.org/ticket/3032 http://bugs.musicbrainz.org/ticket/3032] (asked by gioele on IRC, copied here by me --[[User:kuno|kuno]]). <br />
* I would like some way to indicate that a track is a live performance of some other track in the DB, this was already suggested by someone else on the [[Other Version Relationship Type|OtherVersionRelationshipType]] page. --[[User:kuno|kuno]]. <br />
* I would like a "has book by" AR for musical theater. "Libretto" or "Lyrics" could be used, but neither is really correct for these. Wiki has a short (but decent) discussion/example of this: "In the case of musicals, the music, the lyrics, and the "book" (i.e., the spoken dialogue and the stage directions) may each have their own author. Thus, a musical such as Fiddler on the Roof has a composer (Jerry Bock), a lyricist (Sheldon Harnick), and the writer of the "book" (Joseph Stein)." * something to link multi-disc sets e.g. X "is the first disc in a set containing" Y, Z etc. This isn't ideal because a) only the first disc will point to all the discs in sets of 3 or more, b) you can have sets that overlap i.e. a disc belongs to more than one set, c) it's a bit of work for not much gain (though probably easily automatable in all cases but the ones where it counts e.g. two different sets with the same name but different component discs). Possibly one AR for two discs sets, and another for 3+ sets might make sense? Or, maybe like in Wikipedia you could link to previous and next discs in the series <br />
* something to link Series of Releases (e.g. [http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/Series http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/Series]). Similar issues multi-disc sets above i.e. link to next in sequence?, link to first? <br />
* something to link compilations that consist of multiple entire albums (or an album and singles, or 2 or 3 E.P.s). Example: several Beach Boys 2-for-1 albums like [http://musicbrainz.org/release/455301b6-e1d1-4d93-8d2e-bc91207d83a5.html Surfin' Safari / Surfin' USA] <br />
* a way to link to a person who whistles on a track using just their lips, as opposed to playing a [tin|slide|penny|referee's] whistle instrument like [http://musicbrainz.org/artist/19fc62c0-3241-499d-bc75-739e50cab1c1.html Alessandro Alessandroni] on [http://musicbrainz.org/track/9f9ea2e7-2f51-4b8d-b4f5-47bcc5b97e8a.html Titoli] from A Fistfull of Dollars.</div>Reosarevokhttps://wiki.musicbrainz.org/index.php?title=User:CatCat&diff=77510&oldid=0User:CatCat2024-03-25T07:39:43Z<p><a href="/User:Reosarevok" class="mw-userlink" title="User:Reosarevok"><bdi>Reosarevok</bdi></a> moved page <a href="/index.php?title=User:CatCat&redirect=no" class="mw-redirect" title="User:CatCat">User:CatCat</a> to <a href="/User:ApeKattQuest,_MonkeyPython" title="User:ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython">User:ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython</a> Automatically moved page while renaming the user "<a href="/User:CatCat" class="mw-redirect" title="User:CatCat">CatCat</a>" to "<a href="/User:ApeKattQuest,_MonkeyPython" title="User:ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython">ApeKattQuest, MonkeyPython</a>"</p>
