Ideas for if/when we have instrument entities (MBS-3674).
Possible relationships
Instrument-instrument
- <instrument> is a type of <instrument>, e.g. <huqin> is a type of <string instrument>.
- <instrument> is derived from <instrument>, e.g. <shamisen> is derived from <samisen>.
- <instrument> is a style of playing of <instrument>, e.g. <fiddle> is a style of playing of <violin>.
- <instrument> consists of <instrument>, e.g. <drumset> consists of <hi-hat>, <tom tom>, ....
- Perhaps <instrument> is related to <instrument> for cases where it's not clear whether it's derived or just related.
- Instruments could be migrated using a generic <instrument> has child instrument <instrument> relationship which would be deprecated immediately and removed once we've fixed all the relationships.
Instrument-URL
- <instrument> has a Wikipedia page at <URL>. Obviously.
- <instrument> has an image at <URL>. Ideally Commons links that we could display in the sidebar.
Possible fields
- Hornbostel-Sachs classification
- A type, to distinguish families of instruments (string instruments, duct flutes) from individual instruments (viola, descant recorder). But what about vague ones like "recorder"? "Generic instrument" perhaps.
- Disambiguation comment, e.g. <tar> (drum), <tar> (lute).
- Aliases, e.g. descant recorder (en-GB) and soprano recorder (en-US); recorder (en) and Blockflöte (de), double bass (en) and contrabass (en)
Issues
- Ordering things by range, e.g. saxophone has sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, bass, contrabass and we order them from highest to lowest.
- Descriptions should be translatable.
