This wiki page is made to point out some of the specific techniques for tagging the A State of Trance radio shows.
These '''unofficial''' guidelines cover the [[mb:series/3940c456-afeb-4b2f-9a27-8f5876889b4d|A State of Trance series]] of radio broadcasts.

This page is intended to be expressed in the same way as the '''official''' guidelines for [[Style/Specific types of releases/Broadcast programs|Broadcast programs]] but with specific examples related to A State of Trance.
= Overview =
==Guidelines==
===Release group type===
The [[Release Group/Type |release group type]] should be set to "Broadcast" and "DJ-mix". If the show was recorded in front of a ''live audience''<ref>The original style guideline refers to "live studio studio" audience, but that doesn't really apply to these broadcasts, so this is interpreted as episodes that were recorded in front of a live audience.</ref>, add "Live".
===Release name===
Follow this format: YYYY-MM-DD: A State of Trance #1234[, "Program Title"][: Location]

Only include ''Location'' if it is a live recording, or if the location of the recording changes often and is mentioned in the program or on the program's website. Don't add the location for most studio recordings. ''Location'' is of this syntax: <nowiki>[Venue, ]City, [State, ]Country</nowiki>
Almost all broadcasts (studio and live sets included) consist of a ''continuous mix'' and ''split track'' version. These are effectively the same audio but the former is a single track consisting of all the tracks. Normally a continuous mix would not exist in MusicBrainz but since this is a live broadcast that is originally mixed as one solid block it is necessary to keep continuous mixes.

General Notes:
The guidelines outlined here are based on the (newer) [[Style/Specific types of releases/Broadcast programs]] style guidelines.

* Some episodes - especially those that are live yearly concerts - can be split into multiple parts, these are denoted like #500.5.
= Terminology =
* The episode number may not be unique to the release group if the event has multiple stages.
* The ''Program Title'' should only be used for episode that have a known title such as "Top 20 of 2001" and not be used to annotate guest mixes "Airwave Guest Mix".
* Avoid using UTF-8 double quotes (angled) for the ''Program Title'', use regular double quotes (").
* Do not include "XXL" in the ''Program Title'' as this is descriptive but not actually part of the title.

Examples:
== Broadcast Episode ==
*[[mb:release-group/80b71cf0-f2a9-4a58-b5cc-c536850590e2|2001-11-01: A State of Trance #20: Club Scanners, Dordrecht, The Netherlands]]

*TODO: Add example of multistage.
===Artist credit ===
The artist credit should always include [[https:477b8c0c-c5fc-4ad2-b5b2-191f0bf2a9df|Armin van Buuren]], along with any artists that have provided guest mixes.

Examples:
For studio broadcasts it is simply a single broadcast. However in the case of live events a broadcast episode will consist of all the parts of a single stage at a single event. For example lets say an event spanned 5 cities and each city has 3 stages, each of the stages has 6 DJs playing in one continuous show. There would be 15 release groups (5 cities x 3 stages) but each release group would contain 6 releases, each is Part numbered with the DJ name.

* [[mb:release-group/5a6423d6-9f56-4336-a95b-54a7a94269af|2002-04-18: A State of Trance #44 – Armin van Buuren]]: A regular episode with no guest mixes.
== Continuous Mix ==
* [[mb:release-group/0b5f2659-4df1-484a-afb2-875cb3cb4364|2002-06-27: A State of Trance #53 – Armin van Buuren & Airwave]]: Includes a guest mix from Airwave.
* [[mb:release-group/63160ed7-c3c7-4e5e-b722-ab6c660408c7|2023-07-27: A State of Trance #1131 – Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten & John O’Callaghan]]: Includes two guest mixes from Ferry Corsten and John O’Callaghan respectively.

===Track listings===
Is a single audio track spanning an entire ''broadcast episode''.
Episodes can be distributed in a several forms, each version should be a different release within the release group.

== Split Tracks ==
==== Single MP3 (Bootleg) ====
In most cases this will be the full 2 hours, however, there are some cases where it may less or more (1 or 3 hours). It should contain a single track that is the same name as the release group:

* [[mb:release-group/63160ed7-c3c7-4e5e-b722-ab6c660408c7|2023-07-27: A State of Trance #1131]] (1 track)
A ''continuous mix'' is split into separate tracks.

This is a Bootleg and should not contain a release event, label or catalog number.
= Check List =

==== Multiple MP3 Parts (Bootleg) ====
This is a good way to make sure each ''broadcast episode'' is complete.
Some older episodes are split into the episode sections. Each track should have the title of the section.

This is a Bootleg and should not contain a release event, label or catalog number.
* There is one release group per '''broadcast episode'''.

==== Split/Individual Tracks (Bootleg) ====
* Artist: '''Armin van Buuren'''
This is the original episode split into tracks:
* Name: The name of the release group follows Naming Conventions below.

==== Streaming Release (Official) ====
Episodes are now released on streaming platforms such as Spotify or Apple Music. These follow the standard guidelines for official releases.

Spotify has almost all episodes dating back to #0. However, it's worth noting that many episodes have a different track list because some tracks have been removed (perhaps because of licensing issues). Furthermore, the same recent release on Spotify vs Apple Music can also have very different track lists.
* A release for the split track and continuous mix versions. These will both have the same name, which is also the same name as the release group.
* For the continuous mix version it must contain only one track that has the artist '''Armin van Buuren''' and the title the same as the release group.

===Label===
* Example continuous mix: http://musicbrainz.org/release/a156f737-c59f-4d53-9c73-667b558e1465
Bootleg versions are easily available for download from many sources. However, they were never available for download through any official or label-endorsed website so they should not be attributed to any label.
* Example split tracks: http://musicbrainz.org/release/6473e847-4544-4c04-9e30-b2f1346d51c6

Streaming releases are official and follow the standard guidelines for labels.
=== Live ===

===Release date===
* Each stage works like a Studio episode (called a Part that belongs to a DJ). There is a continuous mix and split track version of each part.
Bootleg versions were never officially endorsed or released by any label, so they should never contain a release date.
* Each release belonging to a DJ should be ''DJ-mix'' relationship.

According to [https://www.astateoftrance.com/news/a-state-of-trance-now-exclusively-streamed-on-spotify/ this official blog post] the episodes were available on Spotify from 2012-09-09 which would be [[mb:release-group/7027081b-7771-4d22-86c3-2e886484fcf5|2012-09-13: A State of Trance #578, "Universal Religion Chapter Six Release Special"]] and beyond (which is also the episode shown on the same page). So I'll focus on all the episodes up there.
* Example: http://musicbrainz.org/release-group/ff9dac7f-9ed9-4b5f-ac5e-85a7f3ee116d

=== Cover art ===
The date used on the release name as per the [[Live Bootleg Style]] is the date of ''broadcast'' not the date of when the event happened. Many of the episodes feature one or two hours of a live set at a given event, but the date of the broadcast (which is often several days later) is used in all cases. For any event that spans multiple dates it should be made into multiple release groups as these would have to be different broadcasts.
There have been many fan-created artworks over the years. Some are included in the Bootleg releases. However, '''the Bootleg releases should never include artwork''', even if the artwork was later present on streaming services.

=== Terminology ===
= Naming Conventions =
There are some words or phrases that popup a lot, but are generally not consistent or might be ambiguous:
For the most part the naming scheme is derived from [[Live Bootleg Style]]. However, there is some flexibility required to accommodate the varying radio shows.

== Pure Studio ==
The most common, where all the of tracks are broadcast from a studio.
* This includes special mixes like Yearmix and Top 20.
* Naming follows official MusicBrainz style guidelines.

Example:
* [http://musicbrainz.org/release-group/b60422c9-1cc2-47be-b305-f848c54d9087.html 2011-01-06: A State of Trance 490]

== Pure Live / Events ==
The second most common; broadcasts that have no studio time or are recorded from an event.
* This does not apply to broadcasts that only have part of a live set.
* Naming follows official MusicBrainz style guidelines.

Examples:
* [http://musicbrainz.org/release-group/80b71cf0-f2a9-4a58-b5cc-c536850590e2.html 2001-11-01: A State of Trance 20: Club Scanners, Dordrecht, The Netherlands]
* [http://musicbrainz.org/release-group/73ec42fb-ea32-40ca-b94d-5e2cbaf7d15a.html 2002-07-11: A State of Trance 55: Godskitchen, Club Code, Birmingham, UK]

== Guest Performances ==
Mostly occurring early on in the ASOT series (up to episode 200). The 2 hour set was split into 2 single hour sets usally with the first hour being mixed by Armin van Buuren and the second hour likewise by another DJ.
* Append "Guest[s] [Guest1], [Guest2]... & [Guest3]".

Examples:
* [http://musicbrainz.org/release-group/39e2e01e-50dd-4d06-997d-e019c5418de9.html 2002-12-12: A State of Trance 76: Guest Signum]
* [http://musicbrainz.org/release-group/2bfff312-00f2-427f-85c2-7b1f144b4595.html 2003-05-01: A State of Trance 95: Guests Misja Helsloot & Gesture]

* '''b2b''' means back-to-back when 2 (or more) DJs will take turns selecting songs for the mix. Use the lower case '''b2b''' (not '''B2B''') in artist names.
== Mixture ==
* '''Mainstage''' instead of '''Main Stage''' because it is the primary stage, the stage itself is not called "Main"
A lot of the early releases contain one hour of Armin van Buuren's set followed by a live set, guest mix, or some other non-standard mix. Whatever the case this is still reflected in the release and release group name like:
* '''Preparty''' and not '''Pre-party'''. It is a descriptive term for the set that appear either a day before or immediately before the official sets. This is sometimes be used a closed (invite only) party at a smaller location or live in the studio.
* [http://musicbrainz.org/release/2b68b5af-0535-4120-9994-00bf70f488ce.html 2003-09-04: A State of Trance 113: Guest Lange]
* '''Takeover''' instead of '''TakeOver''' or '''Take Over'''. These more recent episodes have had another DJ host and provide the mix, such as Ferry Corsten.
* '''Who's Afraid of 138?!''' with the '''?''' before the '''!'''. This is sometimes abbreviated as WAO138 or similar. Unless the name says to use WAO138 specifically (like it's on a poster) you should use the fully expanded name.
* '''Yearmix''' instead of '''Year Mix'''. This dates back to 2002 where it was always referred to as one word, only recently have some locations started separating it as two words.

== Anti-patterns & Cleanup ==
Some broadcasts have live and guest mixes (this is not the same as an event like ASOT 500). In which case the release group name is stacked with all that apply:
* [http://musicbrainz.org/release-group/cf4e0cdf-136e-4f82-a220-c9bb239ce507.html 2003-06-05: A State of Trance 100: Bloomingale, The Netherlands: Guests Jon O Bir, Marco V. & Lemon 8]

=== Continuous Mixes ===
= Tracks =
The previous version of this style guideline requests for the Single MP3 or Multiple MP3 Parts to use "Continuous Mix" in the title. These should be removed.
Many of the studio (and some live) episodes have an intro and outro in the form of "[intro] - [no artist]" and "[outro] - [no artist]". There are a few releases that need this corrected.

=== Guest Mixes in Titles ===
= Special Feature Tracks =
As mentioned above, any guest mixes are not part of the named title of the episode. The respective artists should be moved to the artist credits and removed from the title.
Each episode usually contains three special tracks; '''Tune of the Week''', '''Future Favorite''' and '''ASOT Radio Classic'''. Theses are tagged with square brackets at the end of the track title:
* If It Ain't Broke [Tune of the Week] (http://musicbrainz.org/track/74500b50-948b-4eb8-917e-43bf50948704.html)
* Another World (Shogun remix) [Future Favorite] (http://musicbrainz.org/track/58045b1c-0c95-4781-9442-4bd2e0e0b1ae.html)
* Dark Side of the Moon [ASOT Radio Classic] (http://musicbrainz.org/track/1c0a4335-032a-4c03-8866-1334dabfa651.html)

== Other Notes ==
Less frequently are other special tracks:
* Right Back [Tune of the Year] (http://musicbrainz.org/track/51f09c9b-e098-4118-9642-cbaacc45dd42.html)

# Spotify was the earliest streaming service to host episodes starting 2012-09-09. The first episode was [[mb:release-group/7027081b-7771-4d22-86c3-2e886484fcf5|2012-09-13: A State of Trance #578, "Universal Religion Chapter Six Release Special"]]. So no release dates can exist before this.
= Labels =
# Streaming releases (older and newer) often have a totally different track list from the Bootleg version, and the releases can differ on each streaming platform. For example #1123 on [https://open.spotify.com/album/4Szw1LMu0G3tgiDxEc6yJu Spotify is 43 tracks] vs [https://music.apple.com/us/album/asot-1123-a-state-of-trance-episode-1123-dj-mix/1690395465 Apple Music is 28 tracks].
Often raw tracks imported from astateoftrance.com or other source will have the label for that particular track attached, like:
# In the first three episodes, the show was called "Into Trance". From Episode 4 onwards, it was called "A State Of Trance". Since "Into Trance" is never seen anywhere, we use the new show name for all episodes.
* Mat Zo – Default (Anjunabeats)
# On 1 June 2001 (a Friday), #1 was broadcast through ID&T Radio, and continuing its broadcast weekly until #182 that was the last to air on ID&T Radio. The show was canceled unexpectedly after the station decided to change its music policy.
Once a "published" track-label relationship is added the " (Anjunabeats)" can be removed.
# #183 was aired a month later, through the Internet radio station ETN.fm and from #185 onward, the show went from ETN.fm to DI.FM and began to synchronize on many national radio stations.
# To better adapt to an international audience, Armin went from presenting in Dutch to presenting in English starting #183.
# Since #500, "A State of Trance's" annual episodic celebrations have effectively replaced Trance Energy (later simply called Energy, focusing on electro house instead of trance) as the main trance event in the Netherlands, where every year the biggest of these celebrations takes place.
# From #800 Part 2, the show began to broadcast in video through YouTube from a new studio in Amsterdam. In addition, the Dutch DJ and producer Ruben de Ronde began to co-host the program with Armin van Buuren.
# For most episodes beginning with #922 different DJs are invited to mix during parts of the show. Armin is absent from some episode occasionally and other DJs, such as Ferry Corsten, present those episodes.
# In #972, Ferry Corsten's monthly residency on the show is announced.
# The label A State of Trance was formed in 2003 as a sub-label to its Dutch parent company Armada Music.
# ASOT is broadcast as a 2-hour livestream with some stations re-airing the entire stream. However, several of its radio affiliates omit the second hour, and other stations format the show into two 58-minute segments to make time for local advertising and station branding.
# Each regular broadcast features five songs selected as:
## The Tune of the Week is selected by Armin van Buuren as his personal choice of best new tune in the show.
## The Future Favorite is voted for by listeners from a list of new tunes from the previous week's show. This section began in #90. The poll takes place at [https://www.astateoftrance.com/futurefavorite/ Future Favorite].
## For Service for Dreamers, Armin asks the listeners of A State of Trance to submit original suggestions for a trance track that has had a meaningful impact in their lives. During #248 and #769, when it was known as ASOT Radio Classic (and between #770 and #799 as Armin's Oldskool Classic), Armin would select a track from past years and briefly describe what made the track a classic. Armin also played a classic track on each of the first 16 episodes in the early days of the radio show. These tracks were productions from the 1990s and showcased some of the very earliest pioneers of the Trance genre.
## The Trending Track is the most discussed track from last week's show. This section began in #706.
## The Progressive Pick is a segment for a featured new progressive trance track. This segment began in #717.

Latest revision as of 19:04, 3 September 2023

Scope

These unofficial guidelines cover the A State of Trance series of radio broadcasts.

This page is intended to be expressed in the same way as the official guidelines for Broadcast programs but with specific examples related to A State of Trance.

Guidelines

Release group type

The release group type should be set to "Broadcast" and "DJ-mix". If the show was recorded in front of a live audience[1], add "Live".

Release name

Follow this format: YYYY-MM-DD: A State of Trance #1234[, "Program Title"][: Location]

Only include Location if it is a live recording, or if the location of the recording changes often and is mentioned in the program or on the program's website. Don't add the location for most studio recordings. Location is of this syntax: [Venue, ]City, [State, ]Country

General Notes:

  • Some episodes - especially those that are live yearly concerts - can be split into multiple parts, these are denoted like #500.5.
  • The episode number may not be unique to the release group if the event has multiple stages.
  • The Program Title should only be used for episode that have a known title such as "Top 20 of 2001" and not be used to annotate guest mixes "Airwave Guest Mix".
  • Avoid using UTF-8 double quotes (angled) for the Program Title, use regular double quotes (").
  • Do not include "XXL" in the Program Title as this is descriptive but not actually part of the title.

Examples:

Artist credit

The artist credit should always include Armin van Buuren, along with any artists that have provided guest mixes.

Examples:

Track listings

Episodes can be distributed in a several forms, each version should be a different release within the release group.

Single MP3 (Bootleg)

In most cases this will be the full 2 hours, however, there are some cases where it may less or more (1 or 3 hours). It should contain a single track that is the same name as the release group:

This is a Bootleg and should not contain a release event, label or catalog number.

Multiple MP3 Parts (Bootleg)

Some older episodes are split into the episode sections. Each track should have the title of the section.

This is a Bootleg and should not contain a release event, label or catalog number.

Split/Individual Tracks (Bootleg)

This is the original episode split into tracks:

This is a Bootleg and should not contain a release event, label or catalog number.

Some tracks include an annotation like "Tune of the Week", "Future Favorite", "ASOT Classic", etc but these can be included in the track title but should not be included in the recording title.

Streaming Release (Official)

Episodes are now released on streaming platforms such as Spotify or Apple Music. These follow the standard guidelines for official releases.

Spotify has almost all episodes dating back to #0. However, it's worth noting that many episodes have a different track list because some tracks have been removed (perhaps because of licensing issues). Furthermore, the same recent release on Spotify vs Apple Music can also have very different track lists.

Label

Bootleg versions are easily available for download from many sources. However, they were never available for download through any official or label-endorsed website so they should not be attributed to any label.

Streaming releases are official and follow the standard guidelines for labels.

Release date

Bootleg versions were never officially endorsed or released by any label, so they should never contain a release date.

According to this official blog post the episodes were available on Spotify from 2012-09-09 which would be 2012-09-13: A State of Trance #578, "Universal Religion Chapter Six Release Special" and beyond (which is also the episode shown on the same page). So I'll focus on all the episodes up there.

Cover art

There have been many fan-created artworks over the years. Some are included in the Bootleg releases. However, the Bootleg releases should never include artwork, even if the artwork was later present on streaming services.

Terminology

There are some words or phrases that popup a lot, but are generally not consistent or might be ambiguous:

  • b2b means back-to-back when 2 (or more) DJs will take turns selecting songs for the mix. Use the lower case b2b (not B2B) in artist names.
  • Mainstage instead of Main Stage because it is the primary stage, the stage itself is not called "Main"
  • Preparty and not Pre-party. It is a descriptive term for the set that appear either a day before or immediately before the official sets. This is sometimes be used a closed (invite only) party at a smaller location or live in the studio.
  • Takeover instead of TakeOver or Take Over. These more recent episodes have had another DJ host and provide the mix, such as Ferry Corsten.
  • Who's Afraid of 138?! with the ? before the !. This is sometimes abbreviated as WAO138 or similar. Unless the name says to use WAO138 specifically (like it's on a poster) you should use the fully expanded name.
  • Yearmix instead of Year Mix. This dates back to 2002 where it was always referred to as one word, only recently have some locations started separating it as two words.

Anti-patterns & Cleanup

Continuous Mixes

The previous version of this style guideline requests for the Single MP3 or Multiple MP3 Parts to use "Continuous Mix" in the title. These should be removed.

Guest Mixes in Titles

As mentioned above, any guest mixes are not part of the named title of the episode. The respective artists should be moved to the artist credits and removed from the title.

Other Notes

  1. Spotify was the earliest streaming service to host episodes starting 2012-09-09. The first episode was 2012-09-13: A State of Trance #578, "Universal Religion Chapter Six Release Special". So no release dates can exist before this.
