Performance Name of a Person
A Performance Name is an alias used by a musician, for either marketing or other reasons. A particular person may have several Performance Names, and might also release material under their LegalName.
For this reason, it's sometimes necessary to create multiple separate artist entries for the same person in the database.
How to relate these names?
Performance names may be linked to LegalNames using the PerformanceNameRelationshipType, relating both artist entries together.
Style
StyleGuidelines for performance names are kept under PerformanceNameStyle.
Examples
- Elvis Costello is the Performance Name of Declan Patrick MacManus. Bono is the Performance Name of Paul David Hewson. Aphex Twin, AFX and Caustic Window are all Performance Names of Richard David James.
Issues
- There is some discussions about whether to duplicate the artist birth date and artist death date in both PerformanceName
s and LegalName
s (see DateOfBirthStyle).
- It's not clear what we should do when an artist has more than one legal name - that is, how should they be related together, and how should they relate to performance names. One proposal is at LinkingDifferentArtistNames.
