When a user is nominated (i.e., a new candidate is proposed), if/when two seconders are found and the election starts, and when voting closes, the system will send an email to the [[Mailing_List#Auto-Editors_Mailing_List|Auto-Editors mailing list]]. The email will describe the election's status and also provide relevant web links. This mailing list should also be used for discussion of the nomination. |

The Auto-Editor Elections happen on the main server and are available for anyone to review, however, you must be an existing Auto-Editor to vote on an election.
When viewing election details, a vote tally and the election results will be visible for a closed election, individual users' votes are always hidden. The election details goes back as far as 2004 which is when the current election system was implemented.
Becoming an Auto-Editor
In order to become an Auto-Editor, you must first be nominated by an existing Auto-Editor. Once nominated, all existing Auto-Editors will have an opportunity to vote on your nomination.
Rules/Regulations/Formalities
- Any Auto-Editor can nominate any user to become an Auto-Editor.
- A nominated user must be seconded by two other Auto-Editors.
- Once seconded twice, other Auto-Editors have one week to vote on the election.
Any Auto-Editor who nominates or seconds a candidate cannot vote in the election itself.
Process
- A new election is started by clicking "Nominate for Auto-Editor" on the profile page of the candidate.
- While it is not required, it is then customary for the proposer to send an email to the Auto-Editors mailing list to personally announce their nomination and give others a brief introduction to the candidate and why they should be elected.
- Two other users second the nomination by going to the candidate's election page and click the "Second" button.
- The election is then voted on by going to the candidate's election page. Possible choices are "Yes", "No", and "Abstain". A simple majority is required to pass the election.
Note: All the above actions can only be performed by an existing Auto-Editor.
Communication
The Auto-Editors mailing list, like all of MusicBrainz' mailing lists, is a publicly readable list and is used to discuss nominations.
Additionally, once a candidate is elected they will be automatically subscribed to the mailing list; this is a mandatory subscription for all Auto-Editors.
