MusicBrainz Mailing Lists

The MusicBrainz mailing lists (sometimes called groups) are one of the most important communication forums of the project. All users of the MailingList are expected to follow the CodeOfConduct.

Multi-Purpose Mailing Lists

There are three multi-purpose mailing lists. You can post about almost any MusicBrainz related topic. The lists differ in the degree of involvement of their subscribers:

  • General discussions about MusicBrainz for all users. These include questions about the exact interpretation of the StyleGuidelines. When the term "MailingList" is used, this usually means the UsersMailingList is meant.
    Subscribe View archives
  • Discussions about the development of MusicBrainz for experienced users, who have some experience with the structure, culture, and history of MusicBrainz.
    Subscribe View archives

Specialized Mailing Lists

Then there are some more specialized lists which evolve around a specific topic:

  • This list is an automated notification of CVS commits. Whenever someone checks in code into CVS for any of the MusicBrainz projects, a mail will be sent to this list. This list is handy for keeping track of changes to the codebase.
    Subscribe View archives
  • For discussion and announcements relating to the MusicBrainz live datafeed. Low traffic.
    Subscribe View archives
  • Discussion about creating a new portable playlist format that is open and portable. This list is not directly related to MusicBrainz, it is only hosted here.
    Subscribe View archives

Searching the archives

There is a combined archive where you can read the past discussions on most of the mailings lists (hosted by Nabble). It is also possible to search the archives there.

You can also search the archives by selecting "Search the MusicBrainz mailing lists" on the Site Search. This is the same as adding site:lists.musicbrainz.org to a query for a Google search.

Further Information

There is a MailingListTemplate to create new MailingList pages.

There is some old MailingListDiscussion available.
