Principle: Encourage Volunteers

One of the main MusicBrainzPrinciples is to encourage volunteers. This means to create an evironment in which people who want to spend their free time to work on MusicBrainz - either as developers or in other ways - get all the support they need from the community. Developers even get liberties to make decisions.

In some cases volunteers might need someone working as their "shield" (for developers this is the IdeaChampion) who provides special support for them and assumes all the communication between the volunteer and the community.

  • We might want to think about specifying some details for encouraging volunteers who want to add huge bunches of valuable data to the database without having the time to familiarise themselves with the system and our rules and guidelines. I'm thinking about artists adding their own releases, collectors, people "sitting at the source". In some cases it might be worth letting them add the data without any hassle and cleaning up after them - so they get a "shield"/co-worker as well. -- Shepard 23:41, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
