A fictitious [[Artist|artist]] is a person (or group) that does not exist in the real world but is in one way or the other of discographic relevance - e.g. characters from a movie - and therefore exists as a valid artist in the database. The actor, voice actor, or creator that exists in real life isn't directly credited to the releases or track but is linked to the fictional artist through a [[rt:dd9886f2-1dfe-4270-97db-283f6839a666|Performance Name]] or a [[rt:e259a3f5-ce8e-45c1-9ef7-90ff7d0c7589|Voice Actor]] relationship.


This could lead to a chain of characters such as with the members of Spın̈al Tap: [[Artist:828e6704-4c0e-4406-b211-afbb654ddc20|Christopher Guest]] performs as [[Artist:b1d3723a-1546-46f7-8593-2429eadcc530|Nigel Tufnel]] who is a member of [[Artist:d0a0b3a2-ea58-4a7a-b18c-849d589bfac7|Spın̈al Tap]]. As stated in [[Don't Make Relationship Clusters]], and to avoid potential problems, make sure the chain is linear and doesn't take shortcuts: for example, Christopher Guest is not a member of Spın̈al Tap.

How about artists that use different performance names for one album? Are those considered fictitious artists then or just performance names? (Not so important now of course as we don't have any special guidelines) Two similar examples: [http://musicbrainz.org/album/f3e459eb-e17a-4ea9-a8bc-4936301b8c43.html Mick's Tape (Mixed by Cassetteboy)], filled with aliases by Cassetteboy. Or take [http://musicbrainz.org/album/06b0b11b-7e0d-4a67-8092-5f4eece0c9e7.html Sleepingroom, Volume 1] by Schiller. I did not yet convert it to [[Various Artists|VariousArtists]] because I'm not sure about this one. [http://www.schillerfan.de/disco/sleepingroom1.htm The cover] lists this as VA with different [[Track Artist|TrackArtist]]<code><nowiki></nowiki></code>s actually but the tracks are likely to be all done by the same person (I guess to promote his label). --[[User:Shepard|Shepard]]

A fictitious artist is a person (or group) that does not exist in the real world but is in one way or the other of discographic relevance - e.g. characters from a movie - and therefore exists as a valid artist in the database. The actor, voice actor, or creator that exists in real life isn't directly credited to the releases or track but is linked to the fictional artist through a Performance Name or a Voice Actor relationship.

This could lead to a chain of characters such as with the members of Spın̈al Tap: Christopher Guest performs as Nigel Tufnel who is a member of Spın̈al Tap. As stated in Don't Make Relationship Clusters, and to avoid potential problems, make sure the chain is linear and doesn't take shortcuts: for example, Christopher Guest is not a member of Spın̈al Tap.
