==Discussion==

Is it worth adding ordinals? Even in english they can bear little resemblance to cardinal numbers, and it only gets worse in some languages, where there's multiple cases and genders to be dealt with. -- [[User:KrazyKiwi|KrazyKiwi]]

This is for a very rough project in the beginning stages...

Essentially, to build up a table of CSG-used text in various languages - not libretto text, etc, but "in"/"a"/"from"/etc, keys, instruments, and other words needed to be able to take any:

  • Symphony No. 41 in C major, K. 551 "Jupiter": I. Allegro vivace

and output:

  • Sinfonie No. 41 in C dur, K. 551 "Jupiter": I. Allegro vivace
  • Sinfonia No. 41 en Do mayor, K. 551 "Jupiter": I. Allegro vivace
  • etc.

so we can then work on translating from any source language to any desired language for classical.

Basic short words (definite articles, etc)

  1. masculine/feminine
  2. masculine/feminine/plural
  3. depends on the context
  4. note this is the ordinal masculine indicator (ordm), and not the degree symbol (°).
  5. det may be pronounced dom, and although not properly written that way it does turn up in idiomatic usage.

Note: CSG-based context for each (ie, this should be the only situation(s) for which we'd be trying to translate that word):

  1. Following the words "to", "from", or "of":
    • "Movement to a Sonata"
    • "Sketches of a Ballet"
    • "Beginning of a Fugue"

B. Linking work type to subject:

    • "Cantata on the Holy Grave of Christ"

C. Linking work type to subject:

    • "Sketches of a Ballet"
    • "Beginning of a Fugue"
    • "Reduction for Piano of Contredanse for Orchestra"

D. Only in key identification:

    • "in C minor"

    • "Andante for Piano"
    • "Reduction for Piano of Contredanse for Orchestra"

F. Either linking two worktypes or two instruments:

    • "Recitative and Aria"
    • "2 Violins, 2 Horns and Bass"

G. Opus, work or opera number:

    • "12 German Dances for Orchestra in E-flat major, K. 567 No. 7"
    • "Symphony No. 14 in A major"
    • "Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 9 in C major"
    • "Apollo et Hyacinthus, K. 38: Act I No. 3 Aria 'Iam pastor Apollo'"

H. Linking work type modifications to work types:

    • "Final Movement to a Sonata"
    • "Sketch to a Symphony Movement"

  1. Following the words "to", "from", or "of":
    • "Theme from an Unidentified"

J. Linking work type to subject:

    • "Cantata on the Holy Grave of Christ"
    • "Variations on Chr. E. Graaf: "Laat ons juichen, Batavieren!""

K. Linking work to basis:

    • "Concerto... ..., after J.C. Bach: Keyboard Sonata, Opus 5. No. 2 in D major: I. Allegro"

(*) note that in French, Ut is the old denomination for Do. Both are correct. Ut is still used in technical or theoretical terms.

  • If a work were to be machine translated from English to French, which would be more correct? Ut or Do? -- BrianSchweitzer 08:59, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
    • I don't think having an automatic translation for that is feasible, and either may be more correct depending on the context, but please ask davitof opinion about that. -- dmppanda 12:40, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

For these next few, not only how would they translate, but how would they combine with any of the above (or would they stay as two separate words)?
