The only difference to the current guidelines is the exclusion of cases like '(disc A)' and '(page 1)'. I believe that's already a sort of consensus. --Zout
It is possible that a series of discs is called (disc A), (disc B) specifically, in that case, it's ok to keep that "numbering", as the albums will be ordered the same way as they were named 1,2 (see modid #2023851) --g0llum

I find the use of 'serial' confusing in the first bit. I thought it meant a catalogue number at first, which really threw me. It might be correct english, but perhaps it should be reworded to help idiots like me :) --Gecks
There are other exceptions to the style, e.g. 4hero "Two Pages (page 1)" and the other disc of this double album "Two Pages (page 2)" for that case, the same exception can be applied. (see http://www.musicbrainz.org/showalbum.html?albumid=109833 for reference) --g0llum

I'm not convinced by the two exceptions above. Disc numbers are obviously not part of the title and hopefully at some point in the future an actual DiscNumber field will be added to the database. It seems likely that at that point a script will convert the current standard format (disc x) and (disc y: discname) but will choke on other random variations. I would suggest the two examples above should stick to that format e.g. simply (disc 1) or (disc 1: Page 1). Note that two part cassette, minidisc etc. sets are currently called (disc x). -- bawjaws

Style for Disc Numbers, Multiple Discs with Individual Names, Singles with Disc Numbers & Bonus Discs

  • Discs without a name
  • When a disc is part of a multi disc set and has no DiscName, indicate the disc number by appending " (disc x)"[1] to the ReleaseTitle, with 'x' indicating the sequential number without zero padding, letters etc. Also, if other words than 'disc' are specifically used on the release (e.g. 'page'), still use 'disc'.
  • Discs with a name
  • An extension to the case above: when a disc also has a DiscName, that name must be included as follows: " (disc x: Disc Name)"
  • Bonus disc without a name
  • Bonus disc with a name

Note that a DiscNumber is not the same as a VolumeNumber.

DiscNumbers for singles are also added, even when they're sold separately. It is common practice in many countries, for example the UK, to number these singles. They're usually released on the same dates in the same countries. Only add a DiscNumber to the ReleaseTitle if it is actually written on the sleeve!

Examples

  • "The Wall (disc 2)"
  • "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (disc 2: Twilight to Starlight)"
  • "Beautiful Freak (bonus disc)"
  • "Greatest Hits (bonus disc: Acoustic Hits)"

Discussion

The only difference to the current guidelines is the exclusion of cases like '(disc A)' and '(page 1)'. I believe that's already a sort of consensus. --Zout

I find the use of 'serial' confusing in the first bit. I thought it meant a catalogue number at first, which really threw me. It might be correct english, but perhaps it should be reworded to help idiots like me :) --Gecks

  • I looked up the a Dutch word for which I didn't know the correct English translation. Turns out I didn't use the correct one :( Please make this correct English. --Zout
    • Is this better? I only have the loosest grasp on my own language but it makes sense to me :P --Gecks
  1. Yes, there is a space before the paranthesis. The ReleaseTitle should be separated from the DiscNumber in parantheses by a space.
