A Frogs' Brigade Editing Party

What?

On 2006/09/04, the french MusicBrainz editors decided to take the control back over the french part of the database, by organising a joint tidying effort during the month of September, in order to drastically enhance the quality of all our (beloved :p) french artists.

You can find the original annoucement and details in the mailing list.

During the time of this event, this page helps them maintaining a list of done/ongoing tidying efforts.

It will certainly be moved back to the FrenchArtists page when we'll be done.

Notes

Transversal editing suggestion:

  • oeil for œil
  • coeur for cœur
  • soeur for sœur
  • moeurs for mœurs
  • There are a lot of duos/trios/grouped artists names that are either incomplete or simply mangled (search the VA albums)
  • tracks titles containings "(avec " or "(en duo avec" are indeed "feats"

Abbreviations:

  • D = Discogs, W = Wikipedia, M = Myspace, O = Official website, F = Fan site, I = IMDB, MM = MusicMoz

Have been searched exhaustively, up to (including) letter A of the TODO list:

  • Discogs & Wikipedia (artist entries)
  • Discogs & Wikipedia.fr (release entries), but Air, Adamo and Jacques Brel
  • Aliases
  • Discids
  • Collabs ARs have been set
  • Artist dates

Investigate and report:

Aliases to verify:

  • Les Ondes d'Ombres

Dubious discids:

Stuff for which we still miss label/catalog data:

Nats to verify:

  • Air

Ultimate quality

This is somewhat fictitious... Anyhow, it's the same as good (see below), plus:

  • all sort of ARs goodies :)
  • artist has a short biographic annotation
  • TRM/Pweed are all correct

Good quality

Criteria:

  • All releases (including all VA releases):
    • have spelling verified
    • have good capitalization (with or without the debated "exceptions")
    • have language and status verified and set
    • have a release event
    • have been searched on Amazon
    • have been searched on discogs
    • have at least a label name in annotation (means the release is not bogus/dubious), and ideally cat number + EAN
    • no bogus discid
  • Artist:
    • artist name and sortname verified
    • no bogus "ghost" for the artist in the db
    • artist aliases have been verified
    • artist birthdate/death date have been researched
    • "collabs artists" has all his collab ARs set
    • discogs and wikipedia pages have been searched/added (favor the fr wikipedia domain)
    • no bogus NAT
  • Radiate:
    • all french artists from VA comp where this artist is present are present in this page
    • all french artists having collaborated with this artist are present in this page
  • Maintain:
    • you're subscribed to the artist and plan on watching the incoming flow

Note: some of the releases may not match the requested quality criteria. Still, the presence of the artist here means some time has been spent *researching* the information, even if the label/cat information is still missing.

    • There are several different Delphine, and we need to keep an eye on that to prevent messy misattribution

Decent

Criteria:

  • all releases have language/script set

(note that some artists actually in this category are actually better than "decent", but we still need to verify that)

Discussion

Are not french artists

... though they ended up in this list for some reason we might need to guess before removing them definitely

  • Tina Arena ended up in french artists because she sometimes sings in french, which is the definition of this list. To remove her (as Joan Baez and others...), we must decide if this list is about artists who have at least some titles in french, or about artists who sing mostly in french
    • a (really quick) look at her releases gives me the feeling she sang very few french songs (but this need to be verified). Now, I'm suggesting the following criteria: "Is to be included in the main list an artist with at least one release with language set to french. Artists with no such release, but with a few french tracks should be included in a secondary list we could possibly maintain below".
      • I would draw the limit elsewhere... or add another category. Christopher Young did a release in french, and I am sure there must be other esoteric examples!
