Instrument List

From MusicBrainz Wiki
Jump to navigationJump to search

The instrument tree is the list of instruments that may be used with relationship types which use the instrument relationship attribute. As the list is very large, it is not included here. You can see the full list on the server.

You could refer to Musical Terms Translations or Credit Translations if you're searching translation of common musical terms.

New Instruments

If you can't find an instrument, please search the full list page first. Many instruments have multiple names but the instrument search doesn't currently support aliases.

If you still can't find the instrument you are looking for, new instruments are suggested and discussed in our issue tracker. An instrument will normally be added once five releases have been found. In cases where the instrument is documented as a clearly distinct instrument, we may decide to add instruments after only one release has been found. [1]

Please also add an annotation to the recordings or releases stating which relationships need fixing and what the instrument should really be, so that they can be fixed later once the instrument has been added (see Sub Optimal Credits for more information).

added, reosarevok can fix this:

how to add an instrument request:

first, make sure that it doesn't already exists with a different name, if it doesn't, then: go to https://tickets.metabrainz.org/ chose "create" and select "INST"

About: write out everything you can about the instrument, try to be as pragmatic as possible, link to wikipedia, pictures, other sites. a good example is: https://tickets.metabrainz.org/browse/INST-44 a bad example is:

the details: the Assignee should be autofilled, Issue types (from most to least likely): for a new instrument, Issue type is "New Feature" for something that needs improvement, like adding alias or updating description, Issue type is "Improvement" for something badly wrong, Issue type is "Bug" for more extensive research that'll span several instruments, Issue type is "Task" finally select component(s), wind, electronic, strings, or percussion; multiple can be selected if it's a grey area. no other fields need filling.

don't be afraid to ask if you're unsure about anything!

remember that the more information you provide, the easier it is for the instrument inserter to do the job :D
