ListenBrainz Community Manager Tasks

ListenBrainz, like our other projects have trouble users and spammers. Here are the two tools we have for dealing with them right now:

Users submitting questionable listens

There are sites that prey and artists and promise for a small fee to push an artist's music higher up in rankings. One element of this is promising to enter a shit-ton of listens for that artist into LB. Sigh. These accounts tend to play the same tracks over and over again, sometimes 10s of thousands of times and sometimes with more than one account. The top similar users page at https://listenbrainz.org/explore/similar-users/ is one way to examine these users. The accounts who float to the top here are people who legit users who have the same listens in two separate accounts. Not sure why, but sometimes this is due to testing things and they import a listen history from last.fm into two separate accounts. Other users are spammers who play the same tracks over and over again, as part of a promise to promote the music of their clients.

To investigate a pair of users:

1. Look at the listens of both users. Do they look identical, but not repetitive and focused on one user? Probably not a spammer -- it would be good to contact both users and ask what is going on. Due to storage reasons and gaming the overall stats for the whole site, it would be good to remove duplicate accounts. Not sure what to do if we get no response from the users. Thoughts?

2. If the listens appear to be continually playing the same tracks over and over, then this is likely a spammer. We should contact the user and tell them that if they don't clean up these accounts, we'll delete them. If we get no response within a week, delete them. If it looks like the user is particularly egregious, delete them right away.

We should look at this page once a week, ideally.

Reported Users

On https://listenbrainz.org/admin/reported_users_model/ we can see the users that have been reported by other ListenBrainz users.

Ideally we should check this list daily.
