Table of Contents

Purpose

The purpose of this page is to maintain a list of soul compositions that have been recorded many times - with at least 10 entries to the MusicBrainz database - that present either numerous spelling variants, or some specific spelling and/or capitalization difficulty.

Track titles should be harmonized according to the composition title variants that have been chosen.

By "chosen", we mean the following:

  • a proposed composition title first enters this page in the "To be discussed" or "Compositions: Proposed" lists
  • after it is discussed, eventually changed and approved by soul oriented moderators and native english speakers concerned by style and spelling, it enters the main list

Note that this page is not an official styleguide, it's nothing more than an "ongoing tidying effort memo".

This page & project was inspired by Jazz/Compositions, you might want to check if you can contribute anything there too.

Guidelines

  • Identify the title, composers & first release
  • Find it at ASCAP/BMI (favour the main entry over variants)
  • Check AllMusicGuide, serious discography resources, cover scans...
  • Decide and propose a title
  • Wait one week or two for discussion, proposed changes, approval
  • Harmonize all the occurences of your title
  • Report your harmonization, including date (and possibly number of occurences)

Compositions list: Completed

Listed in alphabetical order.

See the end of the page for details.

Compositions list: Proposed

Use the following format to propose a composition:

  • Proposed variant
    • Composer: Composer(s) name
    • ASCAP/BMI
    • Other sources (AMG/discogs/etc)
    • Variants: list of known variants, mispelling, improper capitalization
    • Performers: add some known performers
    • Approved by: Creap (<- your nickname), (others will add their name here if they agree)
    • Discussion: if needed, your own additional comments, and of course the following discussion
    • Proposed/Clean-up status: Date

  • Reach Out I'll Be There
    • Composer: Holland-Dozier-Holland
    • BMI - REACH OUT I LL BE THERE
    • AMG - Reach Out (I'll Be There)
    • Variants: Reach Out, I'll Be There, Reach Out (I'll Be There), Reach Out
    • Performers: Four Tops, Gloria Gaynor, etc
    • Approved by: Creap
    • Discussion: I can find no instances with paranthesis on an actual cover through a google image search. Some 7"'s has a comma, but no actual covers that I can find. AMG is using paranthesis. BMI doesn't really matter on this, since they never list punctuation marks.

  • Gonna Get Along Without You/Ya Now
    • Composer: Milton Kellem
    • ASCAP - GONNA GET ALONG WITHOUT YA NOW
    • [[[Image:willsviola-gonnaetalong.jpg]] Wills cover 1], [[[Image:willsviola-gonnaget-us12.jpg]] 2], [[[Image:viola_wills-gonna_get_along_without_you_now_s_1.jpg]] 3].
    • Variants: Get Along Without You Now, Gonna Get Along Without You, Gonna Get Along (Without Ya Now) ...
    • Performers: Teresa Brewer, Viola Wills, The Vibrations
    • Approved by: Creap
    • Discussion: Seems like it was first released by Brewer as Gonna Get Along Without Ya Now, although I can't find any cover scans for that release. The Viola Wills release clearly uses "You" though, and most Vibrations discographies use this version too. So I propose using Ya for Brewer releases and You for Wills & Vibrations.
