When submitting an application to the MetaBrainz Foundation, please make sure to use the template below as the basis of your application. Please read the questions very carefully and then answer them completely.

Contact information
Nickname:

IRC nick/Matrix handle:

Email:

Please add any public profiles (GitHub, Bluesky, Mastodon, Twitter/X…) that you think we might find interesting.

Proposed project
Tell us more about your proposed project. Where can we find any diagrams or other things that will help us understand your proposal better? (If these things are already covered in the main application, its safe to skip this question.)

As part of applying for SoC we require that you take your idea and write a post for our MetaBrainz community site with the tag gsoc-applications so that we can help you review your idea before you dive deep into writing your application.

Please propose the idea and then respond to any questions that may arise. Improve your proposal based on the feedback you receive from the community. If you cannot get the community to support your idea your chances for getting your proposal accepted are very slim. If you fail to get community feedback for your project idea, we will not accept your project!

Community affinities
What type of music do you listen to? (please list a series of MBIDs as examples)

What aspects of MusicBrainz/ListenBrainz/BookBrainz/Picard interest you the most?

Have you ever used MusicBrainz Picard to tag your files or used any of our projects in the past?

Programming precedents
When did you first start programming?

Have you contributed to other open source projects? If so, which projects and can we see some of your code?

If you have not contributed to open source projects, do you have other code we can look at?

What sorts of programming projects have you done on your own time?

Practical requirements
What computer(s) do you have available for working on your SoC project?

How much time do you have available per week, and how would you plan to use it? Please note that you're not allowed to have a job or be attending university while working on Summer of Code. It always ends badly for everyone and if we find out that you have another job or university courses that impair your project, we're likely to fail you.
RobertKayehttps://wiki.musicbrainz.org/Development/Summer_of_Code/2024/MetaBrainzDevelopment/Summer of Code/2024/MetaBrainz2024-01-29T21:10:56Z
RobertKaye:

Getting started
Ideas
MetaBrainz-wide notifications system
Proposed mentors: lucifer/mayhem

Languages/skills: Python/Flask/Postgres

Estimated Project Length: 350 hours.

Difficulty: Hard

Expected Outcomes: A system to show notifications to users on-site and in emails

Right now we have no means of letting users know when something happened in their MeB community (read: all projects). For example, just in ListenBrainz we have the following use cases. In order to keep people interested in the project, we should be sending notifications to users when things happen:

* They have a new follower
* A track was recommended to them personally.
* When a playlist was created for them.
* A YIM, monthly YIM or monthly stats are ready for a user.

There are probably more things for which we need to sending notifications, but you get the idea. Ideally such a system would set reasonable defaults for new users and then allow them to customize the settings to their own needs. Ideally the user could choose if they wish a certain notification to be sent at all and if so, if it should be sent immediately or in a digest. The user should also choose the digest frequency: None, daily, weekly.

We have sketched more detailed requirements and implementation plans in the past. You should join our IRC channel to start discussion on this project.

Note: This is a very hard project and we're only going to select candidates who are very proficient with Python/Flask and Postgres.

Matrix Room chatlogger
Proposed mentors: lucifer

Languages/skills: Python/Flask/Postgres or Node/Typescript/Postgres

Estimated Project Length: 350 hours.

Difficulty: Easy

Expected Outcomes: A chatlogger for our matrix rooms

We have recently decided to migrate from IRC to matrix for communication. We have BrainzBot (a fork of BotBotMe), an IRC based bot that reads all the messages and logs them to a Postgres database. These logs are displayed on chatlogs.metabrainz.org. We have a functioning IRC-matrix bridge so BrainzBot chatlogging continues to work fine, but it would be preferred to have a matrix-based version of the bot eventually. Since we self host our matrix homeserver where a lot of the room related data is stored, it would also be interesting to explore if we can directly serve chatlogs using its existing database. In addition to chatlogging, BrainzBot has a few other commands that would need to be accommodated in this new bot.
Luciferhttps://wiki.musicbrainz.org/MusicBrainz_Summit/24MusicBrainz Summit/242024-01-22T22:23:14Z
Aerozol: typo

Upgrading MB Solr dependencies
Goal
Ultimately, we want to upgrade our Solr version from 7.7.2 (which is EOL for a long time already) to 9.x.

That requires to upgrade the JDK version from 8 to 11 at least, or even 17 if possible. Those are all LTS versions.

Upgrading the JDK version can be or not be done independently as a first step, as long as it works.

About JAXB
JAXB (Architecture for XML Binding) 2 is used by both
mmd-schema
and
mb-solr
.

Its specification is part of Jakarta EE
which is part of EE4J (Eclipse Enterprise for Java)
and is the new name for the former Java EE platform.
It is basically the same thing transfered by Oracle to the Eclipse Foundation in 2017:
The new API namespace is
jakarta

(instead of
javax
which is a trademark owned by Oracle).
At the same time, Java EE has been removed from the JDK.
It was provided in JDK 8, it is no longer provided in JDK 11.
Most of our issues have been due to this change in the JDK.

The open source implementation of Jakarta EE (formerly Java EE)
is named GlassFish
and is also part of EE4J nowadays.

* Jakarta EE 9.1 supports JDK 11 (and JDK 8)
* Jakarta EE 10 supports JDK 17 (and JDK 11)

Relatedly, JAXB Maven Plugin
is used by
mmd-schema
to integrate the Maven build system.

Last, the pull request mb-solr#49
has been trying to address the issue of loading JAXB implementation,
even though it was partly based on obsolete information,
it has the merit of looking into pre-existing issues.

About this page
We had a Solr 9 instance running on JDK 17 during Summit 22, but we haven’t been able to make it work again since then.
Many things are being updated at the same time, some depending on the others, so it is easy to get lost on the way.
That’s why this page exists: Keep track of what is being tried to discard dead ends and to find a solution in the end.

Issues can be found at
mb-solr
build time (in build logs), and at run time (in server logs)
using musicbrainz-docker.

From Architecture, our repository mb-solr
internally depends on our repositories mbsssss
and mmd-schema.
Since the two last repositories are git submodules of the first repository,
we identify below each combination of these three repositories
just by the git reference to
mb-solr
.
Many other tries have been done in the meantime; See git log.

The tables in below sections are listing the most relevant dependencies and build plug-ins
required through the file
pom.xml
for each repository.

For below tries, the background color of a cell
means that it is new or that its value changed in the try compared to the current v3.4.2.

ListenBrainz Year in Music 2023: Playlists
The MetaBrainz team values transparency and we lament that many online services lack transparency around the many services they provide.

As ListenBrainz starts to generate more computer generated playlists we're dedicated to providing detailed documentation along with the playlists and recommendations. While all of this transparency infrastructure isn't quite finished yet, we're documenting ListenBrainz Year in Music playlists here on MusicBrainz.

Top Discoveries
This playlist contains your top most listened tracks that you first started listening to in 2023.

To create this playlist we took your listening history for 2023 and found the top most listened tracks and then filtered out any tracks that you didn't first listen to in 2023. Up to 50 of these tracks have been presented in this playlist. Please keep in mind that if you listened to a track before you started recording your listening history with ListenBrainz, we can't know about it, so there is a distinct chance that such a track might end up in this list.

This playlist is a "comfortable" retrospective playlist that should not contain any surprises and should not require a lot of attention to listen to. Go revel in the best of 2023!

If you wish to inspect that code that creates this playlist, take a look at top-discoveries-for-year.py in our Troi recommendation toolkit and top_discoveries.py in ListenBrainz.

Top Missed
This playlist is generated by the taking the top tracks of the three most similar users to yourself and then removing all the tracks that you listened to in 2023. This is a discovery playlist that aims to introduce you to new music that other similar users enjoyed this year. It may require more active listening and may contain tracks that are not to your taste.

Your three most similar users that contributed to these playlists are listed in your playlist description, including links to their accounts so that you may explore their music tastes in more detail.

If you wish to inspect that code that creates this playlist, take a look at top-missed-recordings-for-year.py in our Troi recommendation toolkit and top_missed_recordings.py in ListenBrainz.

This is a project to document and clean up as much of the Fats Waller catalog as possible. Fortunately there are a number of dedicated Waller discographers. Stephen Taylor's book Fats Waller on the Air, and subsequent editions of his "Fats Waller Ultimate Discography" in PDF format, are extremely valuable resources. I have been unable to contact Taylor, whose website fatswaller.org is no longer online, but I was able to find a version of his discography dated 2021-8-10.
Releases that could use attention:

* The JSP "Complete Recorded Works" boxed set volume 2 needs cover art added to fully document recording dates and matrix numbers. I have the other 5 volumes and those all have relevant cover art and disc IDs now.

*Music Maestro Please (Weton-Wesgram LATA075) has a disc ID but no cover art.
*Ain't Misbehavin' is a 10 track US release dated 2003, with no label information. Any details would be useful.
*Ain't Misbehavin' (Australia, SPCD 1036) has a disc ID but no cover art, or release details beyond the country and catalog number.
*Fats Waller and His Rhythm (disc 1) (Australia, CEL Entertainment CEL 111/3) only has 1 of 2 discs.
*The Essential Collection (Avid AVC 878) has cover art with recording dates, but lacks matrix numbers to distinguish alternate takes and vocal vs instrumental versions.
*Lounging at the Waldorf (ABM ABMMCD 1220) has only front cover art, no dates or matrix numbers.
*Ain't Misbehavin' (SMS 20) has cover art sourced from discogs and ebay but no disc ID. You may have noticed that this is a popular title for Waller compilations.
*Ain't Misbehavin' (Rockin' Chair) has disc ID and cover art. According to Taylor's discography, it contains the alternate take 1 of Carolina Shout. However, by length it is closer to the master take 2. Taylor also lists it as containing the April 1937 recording of Honeysuckle Rose; it doesn't match the full length of that track (although it might match the length of the 10" edit) but shares acoustids with the March 1937 "Jam Session at Victor" recording.
*The Real Fats Waller (RCA 88985305422) is a recent 3 CD set that has only front cover art and no disc IDs.
*The Indispensable Fats Waller, Volume 9/10 has no cover art nor disc IDs. It has a version of Mamacita listed at 3:10, but the only known recording is roughly 2:43. Could be a typo, or possibly an entirely different song. The length of Melancholy Baby is also suspect.
*The Definitive Fats Waller appears to be a compilation of two Stash CDs. It's listed on Amazon with questionable cover art (very low resolution, but 'Volume 1' is visible).
*Les Génies du Jazz (Atlas JA-CD 2078) has only front cover art, no disc ID.
*Believe in Miracles (History 203003-302) has disc IDs but only front cover art.
*Handful of Keys (Past Perfect Silver Line 204317-203) has disc ID but only front/back cover art sourced from Amazon.
*The Best of Fats Waller: Original Hits (Worten Jazz 221506-205) appears to be a repackaging of the Past Perfect Silver Line release. Has disc ID and front cover.
*The Panic Is On (Le Chant du Monde 274 1377.78) has no disc ID and only front cover art. Several of the tracks appear to be live/broadcast versions.
*This Is So Nice, It Must Be Illegal (Documents 221992-306) has a suspect length for "Gladyse" (disc 1, track 6). A disc ID would confirm if this is a typo.
*That's Fats! (Vogue 600097) is annotated as containing the complete 1935 (solo) transcription session. However, track 1 "B Flat Blues" is listed by Taylor as containing the 1939 (with band) version. By length, it's a closer match to the 1939 version.
*Giants of Jazz: The Guitarists (Time-Life STL J12) has a version of Latch On listed at 2:32. Only known recording is over 3 minutes, so this is either a typo or an edited version.
Highstrung
