Accents are very important to Italian. 'sì' and 'si' are two different words; 'è' means '(she) is', 'e' means 'and'. Sometimes accents are incorrectly written as a apostrophes after a vowel. [[MusicBrainz]] titles must not contain apostrophes used as accents.

This page outlines the capitalization rules for the Italian language. It forms part of the MusicBrainz CapitalizationStandard.

In English

Capitalization rules

For non-Italian speakers, those who can't understand the meaning of sentences, rules are short. These rules applies to Artist, Album and Tracks.

  • Do not capitalize any word except for:
    • the first letter of the text
    • the first letter of a sentence after . ! ? /
    • the first letter of proper and geographical names (persons, cities, nations etc.)

This should be a standard also for Latin and for classical notation such as "Allegro con brio".

Such capitalization can be achieved using the "Sentence Mode" in the GuessCase options menu.

Rules and examples

  • Capitalize the first letter of a sentence
    • Correct: "L'amore rubato"
    • Wrong: "L'Amore Rubato", "l'Amore rubato"
    • Correct: "1 ora di fuoco"
    • Wrong: "1 Ora di fuoco"
  • Capitalize the first letter of a sentence after . ! ? / but not not after , ; :
    • Correct: "Mi ami? No!"
    • Wrong: "Mi ami? no!"
    • (there are few rare exceptions, ask before voting down an edit)
  • Capitalize the first letter of proper and geographical names
    • Correct: "La canzone di Marinella"
    • Wrong: "La canzone di marinella"
  • Some bands, especially those from the '60 and the '70, must have both the article and the name capitalized
    • Correct: "I Gufi"
    • Wrong: "i Gufi", "I gufi"

Punctuation

Italian punctuation rules is similar to English punctuation rules.

Rules and examples

  • No spaces before and after most apostrophes
    • Correct: "T'ho cercato"
    • Wrong: "T' ho cercato"
  • No spaces before periods, question and exclamation marks, commas (,), semicommas (;) and colons (:). One space after them.
    • Correct: "Mi ami? No"
    • Wrong: "Mi ami ? No", "Mi ami?No"
    • Correct: "Ora: piccole rivoluzioni"
    • Wrong: "Ora : piccole rivoluzioni"
  • No spaces inside brackets, one space outside
    • Correct: "La ballata dell'amore cieco (o della vanità)"
    • Wrong: "La ballata dell'amore cieco ( o della vanità )"
  • Always use double quotes. Straight double quotation marks ("ciao") are ok, curly quotation marks (“ciao”) are better but not required
    • Correct: "Quella chiamata “Anna”"
    • Wrong: "Quella chiamata 'Anna'"

Accents

Accents are very important to Italian. 'sì' and 'si' are two different words; 'è' means '(she) is', 'e' means 'and'. Sometimes accents are incorrectly written as a apostrophes after a vowel. MusicBrainz titles must not contain apostrophes used as accents.

Please note that when 'è' is the first letter of a sentence, it must be capitalized in 'È', not E' (capital E + apostrophe).

Some common mistakes

  • perché
    • mistaken as: perche', perchè
  • poiché
    • mistaken as: poiche', poichè
  • sarà
    • mistaken as: sara' (not to be confused with Sara, proper name)
  • è or é
    • mistaken as: e'
    • mistaken as: si'
    • sometimes sì (yes) is mistaken as si (a reflexive particle). Be careful when entering titles containing 'si'.

Apostrophes

Apostrophes are relatively rare in Italian. They are used to shorten some articles like in "una amica" -> "un'amica". Except for po' , apostrophes are almost never found at the end of a word. If you find an apostrophe at the end of a word, nine times out of ten you found an improperly accented word.

Note for editors of classical music: Some aria titles contain shortened words ending with apostrophe. Do not remove them.

In Italiano

Il seguente standard vale sia per Artista che per Album e Brano, definiti da qui in avanti "testo".

  • Valgono le regole dell'ortografia italiana. [Non ho però trovato un documento appropriato che le elencasse dunque vengono qui sintetizzate]
    • La prima lettera del testo è sempre maiuscola.
    • La prima lettera dopo .  !  ? / è maiuscola.
    • I nomi propri e geografici (nomi di persona, città, nazioni) iniziano sempre con la maiuscola. I giorni e i mesi no.
    • Usare le accentate (àèìòù) e non l'apostrofo, anche per la "e" maiuscola accentata. [Qual è la "e" accentata giusta? Si spera "è" e non "é", quella con lo shift.].
  • La "e" accentata è aperta (accento grave rivolto in alto a sinistra: "è") quando si tratta di un verbo; è chiusa (accento acuto rivolto in alto a destra: "é") nel caso di parole come "perché", "poiché", "bidé" (ma che razza di musica ascoltate?). :D

Un buon riferimento è <<> http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accento_(ortografia)>

  • Esempi:
    • "L'Amore rubato" --> No
    • "l'Amore rubato" --> No
    • "L'amore rubato" --> Sì
    • "Il parto delle nuvole pesanti" Sì "le regole valgono anche per gli Artisti"
    • "È stata tua la colpa"
      • "Every Day, Every Night (A Kiev ero un professore)"

--ClutchEr2
