Capitalization Standard for Spanish
Status: This page outlines the capitalization rules for the Spanish language. It forms part of the MusicBrainz CapitalizationStandard. It is however a proposal and not yet made official by the StyleCouncil.
En Español
De acuerdo a la Real Academia de la Lengua Española se escribirán con letra inicial mayúscula:
- La primera palabra de una frase y la que vaya después de punto.
- Todo nombre propio; v. gr.: Dios, Jehová, Jesús, Luzbel, Platón, Pedro, María, Alvarez, Pantoja, Apolo, Calíope, Amadís de Gaula; Europa, España, Castilla, Toledo, Madrid, Plaza Mayor; Cáucaso, Himalaya, Adriático, Támesis, Bahamas; Bucéfalo, Babieca, Rocinante.
- Los atributos divinos, como Creador y Redentor.
- Los títulos nobiliarios y nombres de dignidades, como Sumo Pontífice, Duquesa de Alva, Marqués de Osuna;
- Los nombres y apodos de personas, como el Gran Capitán, Alfonso el Sabio.
- Los sustantivos y adjetivos que compongan el nombre de una institución, de un cuerpo o establecimiento: Real Academia de Música, Colegio Naval, Museo de Bellas Artes.
- Cargos importantes, como Rey, Presidente, Jefe.
- Los números romanos, como I, X, MCMXC (que equivale a 1990)
- La primera letra que siga a los signos de interrogación o de exclamación, como ¿Dónde? Ahí, ¡Bien hecho! Ahora sigamos
Reglas complementarias:
- Los nombres de los días de la semana o de los meses deben ser escritos en minúsculas.
- Las letras mayúsculas deben ser siempre acentuadas, cuando así sea necesario segun las reglas mencionadas, por ejemplo Álvaro.
- En las palabras que comiencen con las letras Ch y Ll, sólo la primera debe ser mayúscula. CHile o LLorente están incorrectas. Debe ser Chile y Llorente.
