This page outlines the capitalization rules for the Turkish language. It forms part of the MusicBrainz CapitalizationStandard. This is a ProposedStyleGuideline.

Türkçe

Kitap, dergi, gazete ve sanat eserlerinin (tablo, heykel, müzik) her kelimesi büyük harfle başlar: Nutuk, Safahat, Kendi Gök Kubbemiz, Anadolu Notları, Sinekli Bakkal; Türk Dili, Türk Kültürü, Varlık; Resmî Gazete, Hürriyet, Milliyet, Türkiye, Yeni Yüzyıl, Yeni Asır; Saraydan Kız Kaçırma, Onuncu Yıl Marşı.

Büyük Harf: A (Â) B C Ç D E F G Ğ H I (Î) İ J K L M N O Ö P R S Ş T U (Û) Ü V Y Z
Küçük Harf: a (â) b c ç d e f g ğ h ı (î) i j k l m n o ö p r s ş t u (û) ü v y z

Çoğu dilin aksine Türkçe'de "I" harfi "i" harfinin büyük karşılığı değildir. MusicBrainz sitesindeki GuessCase betiği "i" harfini "I" harfi ile değiştirmektedir ve bu bir hatadır. Lütfen bu konuda özel dikkat gösteriniz.

UYARI: Türkçe'de düzeltme işareti (^) hâlâ kullanılmaktadır.

NOT: Bu metin neredeyse tamamlanmıştır, fakat hâlâ bazı kurallar ve istisnaların eklenmesi gerekmektedir.

In English

Every words of book, magazine, newspaper and artistic production (painting, sculpture, music) titles are capitalized: Nutuk, Safahat, Kendi Gök Kubbemiz, Anadolu Notları, Sinekli Bakkal; Türk Dili, Türk Kültürü, Varlık; Resmi Gazete, Hürriyet, Milliyet, Türkiye, Yeni Yüzyıl, Yeni Asır; Saraydan Kız Kaçırma, Onuncu Yıl Marşı.

WARNING: If the title includes connectives such as 've', 'ile', 'ya', 'veya', 'yahut', 'ki', 'da', 'de' and question-suffixes (which are also written as a separate word and indicates a question sentence, thus should end with a question mark, but sometimes on titles the question mark can be omitted) such as 'mı', 'mi', 'mu', 'mü' then these words are not capitalized: Mai ve Siyah, Suç ve Ceza, Leyla ile Mecnun, Turfanda mı, Turfa mı? Diyorlar ki, Dünyaya İkinci Geliş yahut Sır İçinde Esrar, Ya Devlet Başa ya Kuzgun Leşe, Ben de Yazdım, "Düğün ve Cenaze", "Şıkıdım (Hepsi Senin mi?)", "Aşkları da Vururlar", "Ben de İsterem"...

WARNING: The suffixes can also appear in different forms depending on the Turkish grammar rules. The ones given above is the core question-suffixes only. These core question-suffixes can also take different suffixes. Some of the question-suffixes for this rule can be: 'mısın', 'musun', 'mudur', 'mıdır', 'midir', 'miyim', 'misin', 'mısın', 'misiniz', 'mısınız', 'müsün', 'müyüm', 'müsünüz'... And some real examples are: "İster misin?", "Ağlıyor musun?", "Ben İnsan Değil miyim?", "Anlamsız mıyım?", "Gül Koklar mıyım", "Uykuda mısın Sevgili Yarim", "Yüzüne Baktığım Kâr Değil midir?"...

(Taken from 14th rule of ("Turkish Language Society" "writing guideline")

Also it should be noted that there are 29 letters on Turkish alphabet:

Capital: A (Â) B C Ç D E F G Ğ H I (Î) İ J K L M N O Ö P R S Ş T U (Û) Ü V Y Z
Small: a (â) b c ç d e f g ğ h ı (î) i j k l m n o ö p r s ş t u (û) ü v y z

It can be easily seen that, unlike in most languages, letter "I" is not capital form of letter "i". There is a bug in MusicBrainz GuessCase capitalization scripts, which replaces "i" with "I", which is NOT true for Turkish language. Please pay special attention to this issue.

WARNING: The accent circonflexe (circumflex) (^) can be seen above the Turkish letters (a, u and ı) on some conditions and this is the only accent sign that can be seen on the Turkish language. The reason of putting circumflex sign depends on some rules which can be understood by only knowing the Turkish meaning of the word. This sign effects only the pronunciation, it extends (and sometimes also softens) the sound length of the letter (example: hala sounds like hala but hâlâ sounds like haalaa). So that's why they are not included in the Turkish alphabet and on most of the times they are omitted (but omitting this sign known to be a grammar error). Also please note that the Turkish alphabet has the letters 'ç', 'ğ', 'ş', 'ü', 'i', 'ö' which seems like accented forms of the letters 'c', 'g', 's', 'u', 'ı', 'o' respectively, but these forms does not denote only accented forms but totally different letters.

NOTE: This guideline is almost complete, but there are still some rules and exceptions that should be added to this guideline.
