==Compatibility Guidelines==

==Use of special characters==
These guidelines exist to minimize unnecessary compatibility problems with clients that don't fully support Unicode.

Use of basic ASCII punctuation characters such as ' and " is allowed, but typographically-correct punctuation (such as ’ for the English apostrophe) is preferred. The [[Style/Classical|Classical Style Guide]] has its own rules about punctuation in titles; please follow that guideline where it applies. Use normal Latin letters for Roman numerals: their Unicode versions exist only for compatibility purposes and its use is [http://www.unicode.org/versions/Unicode7.0.0/ch22.pdf discouraged by the standard (p.754)].
===Use of Quotation Marks (" and ')===

As always, [[Style/Principle/Artist intent|Artist intent]] overrides this guideline.
* Use standard ASCII single and double quotes " and ' rather than the enhanced versions.
* Use " (one double quote) for inch.
* Use ' (one single quote) for feet.

==“Top something” Playlists==
===Use of Ellipsis Mark (...)===

Bootleg torrents that are compilations based on playlists of charts authorities (like Billboard’s) should not be stored in MusicBrainz as releases. These playlists are often copyrighted by their issuers.
* Use "..." (3 full stops) for an ellipsis rather than the special ellipsis character "…".
** This was discussed on the mailing list [http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.audio.musicbrainz.user/8524 here].

Status: This is an official style guideline.

This page is for small guidelines that don’t need their own wiki page.

Use of special characters

Use of basic ASCII punctuation characters such as ' and " is allowed, but typographically-correct punctuation (such as ’ for the English apostrophe) is preferred. The Classical Style Guide has its own rules about punctuation in titles; please follow that guideline where it applies. Use normal Latin letters for Roman numerals: their Unicode versions exist only for compatibility purposes and its use is discouraged by the standard (p.754).

As always, Artist intent overrides this guideline.

“Top something” Playlists

Bootleg torrents that are compilations based on playlists of charts authorities (like Billboard’s) should not be stored in MusicBrainz as releases. These playlists are often copyrighted by their issuers.
