Style for Extra Title Information

Additional information on an Album or Track that is not part of its MainTitle (but required to make it distinguishable from different albums or tracks with the same MainTitle) must be entered in parentheses after the MainTitle.

This ExtraTitleInformation must be put in lower case, except for those cases where it represents a proper name (f.e. the titles of a (re)mix, the names of places or persons, etc.).

Note, that this does not apply to sub-titles as explained in SubTitleStyle, which are handled as parts of the MainTitle.

Status: Basically this is an OfficialStyleGuideline, but since the content of this page needs some review, I would still consider it a ProposedStyleGuideline concerning specific details.

Details

The specific cases of ExtraTitleInformation are dealt with in a page of their own. Note, however, that unifiying the following guidelines is still under way:

Special Notes

  • We generally do not retain information such as "(album version)" as this is considered incidental. If the release is a single, of course one of the tracks is going to be the "album version"; "album version" is not part of the title, and is extraneous ExtraTitleInformation.

Examples

Blue (extended mix)

Talking All That Jazz (Torti's Old School Mix of Edits dub)

Bear Witness (Automator's 2 Turntables and a Razor Blade re-edit)

Disciple (demo)

Discussion

For example I think "(excerpt)" and "(highlights)" should be in that ExtraInformationStyle: in brackets and lowercase and note it's not a track only matter. --ClutchEr2

The following additions to this guideline were discussed on the mailing list on 2004-11-18:

  • Extra title information should always be in English, except for volume identifiers which are considered part of the title and should be consistent with the language used in the title.
  • Expand all abbreviations within extra title information unless they are part of a title, ie: RMX or MX can sometimes be considered part of a remix title and so should not be blanketly expanded. Featuring is the only accepted abbreviation (as "feat."), all similar abbreviations should be expanded.

It is currently not possible to store all information about releases that people might be interested in. Rather than clutter release/track titles with too much information, the following details should be left out:

  • Country of release or designation as an import
  • Record label
  • Designation as a "bonus track"
  • Any other information not discussed in the OfficialStyleGuidelines.

You can, however, add this information to the AlbumAnnotation.
