: Hi, is that a merge-list or a no-merge-list ? — a remastered release is same recordings ? PUID are not the same for the most (remasters) but ISRC are the same. It’s the same recording in the sense that it is not a re-recording. But is it the same MB recording ? I’d like it to be the same IMO. [[User:Jesus2099|Jesus2099]] 14:34, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

When are two recordings the same

It would be good to mention when it's appropriate to merge recordings.

The following cases seem like they might need to be mentioned:

  • Same audio data, but silence at beginning or end of recording
  • Same audio data except for but fade in/out at beginning or end of recording
  • Same audio data except for crossfade from another recording at beginning or end of recording
  • Same audio data except for other stuff (e.g. talking) at beginning or end of recording
  • Same audio data except for small part (e.g. fade) removed at beginning or end to shorten one
  • Same audio data except for part removed from the middle to shorten one
  • Same audio data except for short parts replaced with silence or another tone (e.g. a "clean" version of a song)
  • Volume change but otherwise identical audio data
  • Audio data remastered in a way that's a simple transformation from one recording to the other (e.g. re-equalized)
  • Degradation of audio data in an analog copy of a recording (compare this to above)
  • Audio data remastered in a way that requires access to more information (e.g. a particular instrument made louder)
  • others?

Some discussion of this has already occurred on the mailing list, but it should be written up in documentation form and added to this wiki page. Dolphinling 06:32, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
