The Next Generation Schema (NGS, in short) is a name that has covered many loads (Dutch figure of speech?) over the years. In se it's just like any other change to the server. There have always been a bunch of perceived shortcomings to the MusicBrainz database. The NGS, it was hoped, would be a fix or solution to all of these. And for a long time it always seemed 'just around the corner'.

NGS Specific Terminology

Since the NGS involved changes and additions to the database (fields), MusicBrainz entities have been added or changed in meaning.
