The Classical Style Guidelines

Track Titles

Classical track titles should be entered as they are on the liner, following normal MusicBrainz style guidelines.

If each track's title is presented in multiple languages, only one should be used, and whichever one is chosen should be used consistently for all tracks.

Tracks should be titled so as to be as informative as possible, per what is on the liner, without over-normalizing the titles such that they no longer represent what is on the liner.

Example:

If the liner presents this:

Concerto for Piano and Orchestra
No. 9 in E flat major K 271
"Jeunehomme"
1. Allegro
2. Andante
3. Rondo: Presto

Then the track titles should be entered as:

1. Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 9 in E-flat major K 271 "Jeunehomme": Allegro
2. Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 9 in E-flat major K 271 "Jeunehomme": Andante
3. Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 9 in E-flat major K 271 "Jeunehomme": Rondo: Presto

and NOT as:

1. Allegro
2. Andante
3. Rondo: Presto

Please note that it is quite common for the outside cover to only include limited identification information due to space limitations. Please check inside the booklet to ensure that you are providing as informative a track title as possible.

Capitalization

Capitalization should follow standard capitalization for the language, with these exceptions:

  • "major" or "minor" should always be lowercased, regardless of what language is used.
  • "No." and "Op." should always have the first letter capitalized, regardless of what language is used.
  • Keys should be properly capitalized for the language. A table with all the keys and their correct capitalization in commonly used languages can be found at the bottom of this page.
  • Opera libretto titles should always follow sentence style, no matter the language.

Abbreviations

AbbreviationStyle should be followed. However, the following should remain abbreviated:

  • No.
  • Nr.
  • Op.

Punctuation

Standard ASCII punctuation should always be used for the space , the full-colon :, the semi-colon ;, the hyphen-minus -, single quotation marks ' ', double quotation marks " ", parenthesis ( ), square braces [ ], commas ,, periods ., and all other punctuation.

If French CSG is being used, the additional punctuation spacing rules of CapitalizationStandardFrench also apply.

Ornamentation Information in Titles:

If your liner includes ornamentation information (Eingänge, Cadenzas, Ornamentations, or Cadences) for a recording, it should follow this form when entered:

Title of track ( Ornamentation Composer : Title of ornamentation" )

If only one ornamentation work is used, simply append it to the end of the track title. Examples:

  • Concerto for Piano No. 12 in A major, K. 385p / K3 386a / KV 414: II. Andante (Cadenza: K. 626aI/31)
  • Concerto for Piano No. 20 in D minor, K. 466: III. Rondo. Allegro assai (Cadence: Ludwig van Beethoven, WoO 58 No. 2)

When applying ornamentation to a track title, omit redundant information. Thus, note in the above example, "Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart" was omitted, as he was also the composer of the work being ornamented, while "Ludwig van Beethoven" was retained, as he was not the composer of the work being ornamented.

To list multiple ornamentation works for the same track, append them as Ornamentation, Cadenza, Eingänge, and separate them with a semi-colon separated on each side by one ASCII space ( ; ). Again, omit redundant information. Examples:

  • Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 1 in B-flat major, K. 207: I. Allegro moderato (Cadenzas: Jean-Delphin Alard; Martin Wulfhorst; Eingänge: Jean-Delphin Alard; Martin Wulfhorst)
  • Concerto for French Horn No. 2 in E-flat major, K. 417: II. Andante (Eingänge: Timothy Brown; Dominic Nunns)
  • Concerto for Piano No. 18 in B-flat major, K. 456 "Paradis": I. Allegro vivace (Cadenzas: K. 626aI/52 / KV deest, Version A; K. 626aI/54 / KV 624/27, Version C; Eingänge: K. 626aI/55)

All tracks which contain ornamentation by composers other than the composer of the ornamented work ought to also be added to the listing in TracksWithMultipleArtists.
