The IMDb of Music: Introducing MusicBrainz

Abstract

When CDDB was purchased and closed down by Gracenote, a few projects tried to step in. One of these were MusicBrainz, today considered the leader when it comes to open data about music, used by such diverse entities as streaming services (Spotify, Last.fm, 7digital, ...), universities (Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona), Queen Mary University of London), music labels (Universal Music UK, Music Kickup), news/public service organs (The BBC, The Guardian), and many others (incl. Google, Amazon, AOL, VideoLAN Client, ...).

But what is MusicBrainz? Why was it started, who's behind it? How can you help them? And, possibly the most important question: How can you use their awesome data??
