Recordings

Recording/work association

Goal

Make sure that each recording has an associated work.

You will need

  • bitmap’s “performance of” userscript.

Process

  • Go to your chosen artist’s recordings page.
  • Using the script, filter out recordings which already have associated works, and all recordings with pending edits.
  • For each recording listed:
  • open the recording in a new tab.
  • choose 'edit'
  • choose 'add relationship' and select 'work'.
  • Find and choose the correct work.
  • Enter an edit comment if desired.
Picking a work

For pop music this is usually pretty easy.

For classical music, it can be helpful to reference one or more of the artist’s catalogs. For example, Mozart has the Köchel number (K. # or KV #) and Richard Strauss has 'TrV' numbers. Most classical artists have opus numbers ('op.'). Many artists will have work listings on Wikipedia or IMSLP.

Musicbrainz has the 'Series' entity, which should at some point serve as a reference for the above, but at the time of writing, it is not complete enough to be useful for this.

Some recordings should not have corresponding works. For example 'data track' and 'silence', as well as certain spokenword recordings.

If the work you need does not yet exist, you should obviously create one. This is a good time to connect the work to the appropriate composer and catalog series entity as well.

Long run of missing works

Sometimes you might run into a long series of recordings which have no works linked to them. For example, an entire opera may not be in Musicbrainz, or may be missing the requisite parts. In this case, it is best to open the associated release. Choose 'edit relationships', check all the recordings, and 'batch-create new works'. Then add the composer/librettist for all works, and make them all 'part of' a main new work (follow opera style if appropriate).

Merge matching AcoustIDs

Goal

Make sure that different instances of the same recording are merged.

You will need

  • Extra AcoustID integration userscript.
  • bitmap’s “performance of” userscript.

Process

  • Go to your chosen artist’s recordings page.
  • Many recordings should have AcoustIDs associated with them.
  • For each recording, open the acoustID-icon link in a new tab.
  • Open each acoustID link in a new tab.
  • Unlink any wrongly-linked recordings.
  • Reload your chosen recording.
  • If it has only one remaining AcoustID, open that AcoustID link in a new tab.
  • Open each still-linked recording in a new tab, and close the acoustID tab.
  • On each of those recording tabs, switch to the fingerprints view.
  • Cycle through the tabs; if any of them have multiple AcoustIDs, repeat the process of eliminating wrongly-linked recordings from those AcoustIDs. Then reload the tab and see if it still has multiple AcoustIDs. If it does, close the tab.
  • You should end up with a set of tabs, each open to the fingerprint view of recordings which have the same AcoustID on each.
  • Start to merge all of those recordings. If you find any questionable merges (unlikely artist, title, duration, ISRC), eliminate those from the merge.
  • Enter an edit note explaining that all recordings have the same AcoustID, and that it is the only AcoustID on those recordings.
  • Repeat for all recordings which have an AcoustID.
