I don't really know why but I have a fondness for unicode characters. I think it's somehow the greatest improvement in computers of these last years. So it's maybe for this reason that I like it to replace those french mistakes like coeur to cœur. I made a special windows keyboard driver (J2_FR) to type all the french special characters because, unfortunately, only canadian keyboards have them.
I think I came to a point where I wonder what is MB really useful for. The MetaBrainz Foundation Annual Report 2006 made me wonder what so much money were really spent for. I came here to catalog my CDs somehow and to maybe one day tag some mp3, but I just realized that if that's what I want, I won't be very satisfied with this or that (2 personal vain attempts in my opinion). I just can make my html page somewhere or why even cataloging my CD in the first place ? As for tagging mp3, I realize I still tag them by hand.

It may be the same passion for accuracy and cool characters, and above all, to improve my vietnamese, that I like to add missing accents on vietnamese song titles and artist names.
SO, now I come here to fix some common french mistakes and to input some vietnamese when I can.

I learn japanese also, so it's like an additional practice to work here too.

Well if each editor has a personal motivation, however strange, but it makes the MusicBrainz move on forward — even just a little — I think it's OK. I'm now making small steps forward trying not to make any backwards.

AutoEditor
I had the surprise to be proposed as an AutoEditor by Kerensky97.

I had already thought about whether I would like to be one or not and I came to the conclusion that I was too much capricious, stubborn and that I had very personal point of views too often to be a good AutoEditor. So thank you Kerensky97 and mudcrow and Editor:jellyfish who seconded his proposal. Thank you very much for your trust.

I fear I am too partial to be an autoeditor. I might irritate some people. And I have little time also.

dmppanda just made me discover a discussion about the vote here 6856731.

Capitalisation
Capitalisation
Would be nice like this:
What
As dmppanda said, I don't Like This Odd and Funny Capitalization system (6608599). I wonder where it comes from in the beginning (From English language habits?). The version of Picard I have doesn't allow to override the uppercase/lowercase scheme so the way titles are named would impact me if I used MusicBrainz to tag files. It impacts everyone using MusicBrainz to tag in fact, having them to apply an Action in mp3tag afterwards for example.

Why
It makes reading uncomfortable, unpleasant, slower and it's aesthetically questionable.

Where
As long as this comes up only in english language I don't have my word to say because I am totally unaware of rules that are usually used in there. But when I see French With Those FunNy thIngs (CapitalizationStandardFrench), that makes me wonder… I am french and never used nor read this often except from people who are used to name their MP3 like this and they don't know why. I think it's even worse for romanised Japanese as Uppercase and Lowercase is something that doesn't exist in Japanese (CapitalizationStandardJapanese). I could at most understand Uppercase for カタカナ and lower case for the rest (ひらがな、漢字) or uppercase only for first letter of proper nouns and first letter of title.

What I advocate
Keep it simple (KISS).
Keep it simple (KISS).
Line 221: Line 188:
* Use lowercase for every character except
* Use lowercase for every character except
** カタカナ is in UPPERCASE
** カタカナ is in UPPERCASE

Who
I respect everyone's point of view (I am myself, a real pain), I just put here this list to remember everyone's :) It's a personal interpretation of editors intention based on one or more edits or statements I came across so I may be all wrong (thanks Editor:murdos for making me realize this ;) ).

Editors who use Funny Capitalization (I mean no offense)
* Editor:dmppanda uses it for everything while he doesn't like it
<ul><li style="list-style-type:none">Hey there. Funny to find my name here, on top of the bad boys list :)-. I don't actually mind you freely interpret and represent what I think and do about Capitalization questions - be it "true" or not to what I actually think and do - as long as you don't mind keeping this note here, as readers may want to have a different truth, straight from the horse's mouth - errrrr panda's mouth: CapitalizationStandardFrench has nothing to do with CapitalizationStandardEnglish. There's no "it": each language has its own set of rules. So, I suggest you keep the issues separated (actually, I don't have any kind of opinion about romanized japanese capitalization). Neither english or french cap are derived from "people's habits who are used to name their MP3 like this and they don't know why" ("not knowing why" being more your own situation as you stated above) - but, as clearly indicated (from the CapitalizationStandardFrench), they are derived from typographic conventions and current usage at Wikipedia, who can hardly be regarded as people doing fUnNy thINgs. Both supporters and detractors of the current (french) SG have publicly admitted that typographic conventions are rich, have a lot of variants, and are not universally followed either way. If you take a look at a bookshelf, you will definitely find examples - so I guess your statement that you've never seen anything like that is... clearly an exageration :p - unless you're french and illiterate, which I'm sure you're not (illiterate that is :-)). As for your questions about their origin, I hope I addressed it just above (if not enough, hopefully, you can research things yourself now, and read typography related articles, at Wikipedia for example). During this summer discussion, it was suggested that we should follow the common practice in libraries. There, you will find one of the origin of some french capitalization rules: sorting. Now, about the supposed complexity of the rules, both the supporters and detractors admitted they were not complex (including some non-native)... I'm somewhat confused that we finally found someone thinking they are... Indeed, they are way simpler than english cap for example. Last, a slightly unrelated note: your "voting policy" doesn't mention that you first (before anything else) check if a release is there or not... I'm sure you do, and you possibly want to state that in your policy, don't you? -- dmppanda 21:10, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
<ul><li style="list-style-type:none">You're welcome here Panda! Thanks! For the duplicate check : No I did not do that. In fact I never thought someone could think of inserting a duplicate release, I realise it could happen not sooner than today with the 6606479. Thanks for pointing this out :) – Well yes you found someone who thinks 15 lines of rules and exceptions were more complex than the simple 3 lines rule I wrote above :) – No I'm not illiterate :) In fact, I checked my books for the first time right now and I found very few FuNNy CaPPeD ones... I even found 2 books in the same serie that use different system (same collection same everything) « Les fourmis » and « Le Jour des fourmis »... Why « Jour » (2nd book) and not « Fourmis » (1st book)... By the way, I'm so relieved that my favourite book is printed the perfect way « La main gauche de la nuit » ;) – ♡jesus2099- 2007.3.28 0:36
<ul><li style="list-style-type:none">Probably because the (cheap) publisher hired two different typographers and/or couldn't be bothered to be consistent. Fortunately, libraries and serious online resources like Wikipedia, use a standardized capitalization. Look at: [ this] is your favorite book... which sure appears as this on Wikipedia... La Main gauche de la nuit. Funny, hey? :-) . -- dmppanda 08:22, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
<ul><li style="list-style-type:none">I think I sound like a stuborn but most of my book titles are good looking, like « La main… ». BTW I don't know of foreigners who can spot a substantif or a qualificatif in a french title… Well I know what to do for the moment : I stick to Vietnamese releases and some Japanese where there is not yet El33t STyLe titling — Yes I love pestering you with this FunNy cApS 7h|Ng ;) ♡jesus2099- 2007.3.28 14:49 (France)
<ul><li style="list-style-type:none">Ok... so you have the "Livre de poche" edition, right? So, would you actually trust the publisher catalog? (as we all know "covers" are not consistent between different editions, especially covers with fancy fonts) - then here you go: "La Main gauche de la nuit", on the publisher website... -- dmppanda 13:12, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

I absolutely fail to understand how any of these edits you link to (both Editor:mll and Editor:murdos edits) demonstrate a dislike/like of CapitalizationStandardFrench... -- dmppanda 11:43, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
<ul><li style="list-style-type:none">Because both 6603788 and 6541497 are simplifications which are similar to my 3 line simple CAP rule. I can be of some help in :

I really do have to tidy this big mess of a page which slowly transforms into a TEARFUL personal homepage

I'll filter out the few useful and productive bits as soon as I have a little time to do so, sorry.

About

I don't really know why but I have a fondness for unicode characters. I think it's somehow the greatest improvement in computers of these last years. So it's maybe for this reason that I like it to replace those french mistakes like coeur to cœur. I made a special windows keyboard driver (J2_FR) to type all the french special characters because, unfortunately, only canadian keyboards have them.

It may be the same passion for accuracy and cool characters, and above all, to improve my vietnamese, that I like to add missing accents on vietnamese song titles and artist names.

I learn japanese also, so it's like an additional practice to work here too.

Well if each editor has a personal motivation, however strange, but it makes the MusicBrainz move on forward — even just a little — I think it's OK. I'm now making small steps forward trying not to make any backwards.

You can ignore everything below this line. I let these because I use them sometimes but I would like to do some sorting to delete what became useless and space wasting.

FauxFaux's great reports. But I think they maybe now in the new edits suggestions…

Capitalisation

Would be nice like this:

Keep it simple (KISS).

CapitalizationStandardFrench

  • Use lowercase for every character except
    • First letter of the title is in UPPERCASE
    • First letter of proper nouns is in UPPERCASE

CapitalizationStandardJapanese

Same as CapitalizationStandardFrench or even simpler :) :

  • Use lowercase for every character except
    • カタカナ is in UPPERCASE

Edits of note

  • There is only one thing that is not wanted, and it is approximative editing, try-and-guess label creation, and random assumptions about label status, name and existence. Such editing behavior will always meet resistance (at least) from me, and is very likely to generate no votes and comments. Anything else will get happy yes votes. Pretending you're meeting undue resistance to try hide the fact your edits are less than accurate is IMHO just lame and clearly disrespectful. Please note that your last sentence ("Now avoid creating any, just use random existing similar label name instead") will grant you additional no votes as well, and will badly hurt your credibility as an editor: if this is your new leitmotiv (and this sounds like something I already heard from you), fair enough - but don't expect sympathy. As you mentioned in one of the edit notes, it's bad for you that MusicBrainz is actually causing you troubles in your professional life. That doesn't mean your fellow editors have to suffer your bad mood. Now, you have the choice to be a good editor (and you'll receive all the help and support that can be). You also have the choice to be a pain and a sloppy editor (and no acid notes like this one will help in hiding that). Take your pick. I sincerely hope it will be the first choice. -- dmppanda 08:41, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
