The idea of this proposal is to reduce the number of recordings that should be linked to individual Prose works, by splitting the recording relationships among chapter works (which are also classified as Prose).

The proposal updates the Works section of the current Audiobook Style guideline to the following:

Proposal

Works

A work should be created for the book itself, with the work title as the name of the book in the narration language of the audiobook. For audiobooks containing chapters, a work should be created for each chapter and related to the book work with the "has part" relationship. The titles for the chapter works should follow the same pattern as for Track Titles, although no part numbers should be included.

The author of the book should be credited on all works using the "writer" relationship. If the audiobook is translated, relate the new works to the works for the original book if they exist, and add relationships to any translators where this information is known.

If the audiobook is split into chapters, relate each recording on the release to the works for the chapters that appear in it, using the "recording of" relationship type. Where a chapter is split into multiple parts, use the "partial" attribute of the relationship.

For example:

  • The first three recordings from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone should be related to a work called "Chapter 1: “The Boy Who Lived”", which itself should be related to a work "Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone". J. K. Rowling should be related to all works as the writer.
  • The 6 recordings used on tracks 2 to 7 of Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen should be linked to a work called "Kapitel 1: „Ein Junge überlebt“", which should be related to "Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen". Klaus Fritz should be related to the works as the translator, and J. K. Rowling should be related as the writer.
  • The 20 recordings used on tracks 2 to 21 of The Hobbit Unabridged should be linked to a work called "Chapter 1: “An Unexpected Party”", which itself should be related to a work "The Hobbit", with J.R.R. Tolkien as the writer.
