Adding a classical release should be reasonably close to how you enter any other release in MB.
Start with "Editing->Add release", and we'll look at "Release information".
I'm going to enter my copy of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, you can see the cover here.
Title & Release Group
The title is in all caps on the cover, but we normally standardise capitalisation unless there is a strong reason to believe that the musicians
(as opposed to the cover designer) intended to appear that way. So I enter "Symphonie Fantastique" instead of "SYMPHONIE FANTASTIQUE".
I have checked that the release group isn't already in MB, so I enter the same title for the Release Group as for the release title. Also, there are no other titles available on the cover.
Next, we add artists from the cover, in the order of prominence. Berlioz got the biggest font here, so I start with him.
To add more artists, click on the ">>" button & then on the green cross after "Add artist credits":
Next in line is the conductor (next biggest font). His name in MB is the local version:
So I enter what's printed on cover in the field "Artist as credited". The "Join phrase" should be " / " (space slash space).
Repeat this step for the orchestra.
Often for classical releases, you can choose one of 3-4 different languages tracklists & then you set the language field to that particular language.
This tracklist however is only available in one version so I'll use "English" here. See the guidelines for more examples of how to deal with multiple languages.
The other fields in this section is just as for any other release.
This section is very important! Please attempt to add a release event to any classical release which you add or edit. Many classical releases feature the same compositions. Occasionally the same performers will release an entirely new recording of the same compositions which they previously recorded and released. Without a release event, even if advanced relationships are present, it can be difficult or impossible to determine what recording is actually represented by such an "empty" release.
I'm entering recording location from the booklet in the annotation:

I can use the dates later, when adding Advanced Relationships, but not the location. We have no field for recording location in MB yet.
If I was in a hurry and didn't have time to enter Advanced Relationships between the performers & the recordings, I'd put in performer information in the annotation too, to help identify the release.
Click "Next" or on the "Tracklist" tab to get to the tracklist editor.
This will be exactly as with any other release in MB. Just remember that tracktitles in classical are often subtitles, and we will need to add the main title to the beginning of each track.
Choose the advanced editor, or we won't be able to change track artists.
Start with selecting the format "CD". Don't enter anything in the "title" field, it's for medium titles (useful for some boxsets). Input the number of tracks (6 in this case) in "Add _ track(s)" and click on the green cross. And then just enter the titles as on liner, inserting colons between lines (subtitlestyle which is only for releasetitles, I'm afraid)
- Don't touch "Guess case" when entering classical, it will mess up your titles! Yes, even the "Classical" setting!
Now we have to fix track artists. Check the "track artist" checkbox and click on "credits" on the first track.
Remove everything exept the composer (Berlioz in this case) by clicking the red X.
To enter track lengths manually, just edit the lenght-fields.
We're finished with this tab, click "Next" or the "Recordings" tab.
The default mode is to add a new recording for each track, so we will just leave this tab.
If the same recording (audio) is already in MB, we'd click on "Change" to search for it.
Now, click "Next" or "Edit note"
Here we can review our edit. Take some time to check everything, go back and fix stuff that went wrong. And, enter a clear, descriptive edit note! Extremely important, if you want someone to vote yes for your edit. I've found a good URL from the label pages, so I'm adding that along with a review page from gramophone.net (we can add a review page-AR later). Amazon search didn't turn up anything really useful this time.
When you're sure everything's all right, click "Enter edit" to finish, and we'll move on to connecting recordings to performers.
For any given classical release, it is quite likely that there are several other releases containing the same works in the same order; if these basic ARs are not set, the release is essentially a 'blank' listing. Such unidentified 'blank' listings have a bad tendency to become full of PUIDs, TRMs, CD TOCs, and other data from a range of unrelated releases. Setting these basic identifying ARs allows the users of the database to identify that the releaser you are adding is not, in fact, the one that they want, both avoiding inaccurate data being added, and potentially leading to more releases being added, both of which benefit the data-health of the database.
Recordings <-> Performers
Performers should only be linked to recordings. Don't relate performers to the release (or the work).
To relate to all recordings on the release , first search for the artist:
On the artist's page, click "Use in a relationship".
Go back to the release. (refresh the page if you use the back button in the browser)
Click "Relate [artist] to recordings"
On the "Create Relationship"-page, first choose the type of relationship. "Conductor"
Now we could choose which recordings to relate to by clicking the appropriate checkboxes. This is useful for example for releases with vocal soloists, or releases where say different orchestras play different works and so on. But we can click the checkbox for all tracks.
After the list of recordings, we come to the Attributes section. Regarding classical recordings and attributes:
NEVER use the "Additional" or "Guest" attributes for a classical performer - recording AR. Period.
If you chose to add an instrument AR above, there will be a box for choosing instrument here.
- Caution if you use the search function: don't use "violins", the correct AR is "violin".
For the conductor AR, there's no box.
Date of performance
If we happen to know what date/year the performance took place, we can enter this in the begin & end-fields. In the booklet I found "Recorded in Stockholm Concert Hall on 4-9 November 1991" (what I entered in the annotation above).
Caution: if there are several dates involved, check carefully what tracks corresponds to what dates.
- For a single date/year, enter the same data for both beginning & end.
As always, enter an edit note, with reference URLs if possible. It's so important, I'm showing another screenshot:
- Note that to add a new AR after this, it seems that first you must return to the artist's page (Rozhdestvensky) and choose "Cancel Relationship with [artist]". Then you can start searching for the next artist.
Note that the composer relationship should be at work level. Don't relate composers to recordings or relases. To say that an artist composed a release is not the same as setting relationships to say that an artist composed each track on a release.
- For common classical works, this AR is likely to already exist.
- Editing works is considered "advanced" editing, best left to experienced editors and outside the scope of this tutorial.
