This guideline applies to the title of a bootleg release group. For the title of a live recording, see live recordings. For the title of a release, see the track and release titles guideline. If the release is untitled, use the release group title as determined below.

This guideline applies to live releases, release groups, and recordings.
Guidelines
Guidelines
The following rules apply when titling a live bootleg release group:

Titles for live entities should generally follow the normal style guidelines, with the below exceptions.
# Live bootlegs without a title must be named by concatenating its date and location information.
#* Syntax: "YYYY-MM-DD: Location".
# Live bootlegs with a single, unique release title should extend the title of the release group with date and location information as follows:
#* Syntax: "[YYYY-MM-DD: ]Title[: Location]". Note that this only applies to the release group and not to the release itself.
#* If there is alternative dividing punctuation mark at the end of the title such as the question mark (?) or exclamation point (!), use that mark instead of the colon.
# The location must be formatted using the city and country, and may include a venue and/or state.
#* Syntax: "[Venue, ]City, [State, ]Country".

Notes
Releases
* The parts in square brackets are optional.
* YYYY-MM-DD is the date of the recording including the year (YYYY), month (MM) and day of month (DD).
* Venue is the name of the location where the concert took place (name of the hotel, stadium, hall, etc.).
* City can be the city, town or village.
* State is to further distinguish cities with identical names (such as Pasadena, TX in Texas vs Pasadena, CA in California) and may be referred to as a province in some countries. See State Abbreviations.
* Country is the country.

Releases with a title, such as most live CDs, should use their own title per the general titles guide. Live releases without titles, such as audience recordings and untitled official live releases, should follow the Release Group rules below for the release title.
Additional Notes
Release Groups
For live concerts that have multiple bootleg releases with different titles, the release group title should use only the date and location as detailed above, without any additional titles. Each release should then be listed under its own title. Releases without a title should use the same title as the release group. If there are multiple releases from different sources, these should be distinguished in the release's disambiguation note.
Grouping
Multiple live releases of the same concert should be grouped in the same Release Group. For example:
* 1993-10-05: First Avenue, Minneapolis, MN, USA (Release group) contains the following releases:
** 1993-10-05: First Avenue, Minneapolis, MN, USA (untitled bootleg release)
** Feeling Like a Smashed Pumpkin (bootleg with title)
* 2008-12-07: Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, IL, USA (Release group) contains the following releases:
** 2008-12-07: Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, IL, USA (untitled official CD release)
** 2008-12-07: Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, IL, USA (untitled official digital release)
** 2008-12-07: Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, IL, USA (untitled bootleg release)

Titling
This guideline must not be used for live bootleg compilations, which are releases that collect tracks from different live sessions, e.g. A Highway of Diamonds, Volume 1: The Never Ending Tour.
Live Release Groups, and untitled live Releases, should be named by concatenating the date and location, including as much information as is known and appropriate, following the format below.

Syntax: "YYYY-MM-DD: [Title: ][Event, ][Venue, ]City, [State, ]Country".
This guideline can be applied to release groups which feature a complete live session and additional bonus tracks (those can be live tracks from other concerts or studio recordings), e.g. 2002-05-02: Ahoy, Rotterdam, Netherlands.
*YYYY-MM-DD is the date, formatted year-month-day. Month and day should be zero-padded, e.g. 2001-05-07 for May 7, 2001. If the month and/or day are unknown, they may be omitted (e.g. 1975, 2003-08).

*Title is included if the release group/concert contains either a single, unique release title, or an official, titled release. If there is an alternative dividing punctuation mark at the end of the title, such as the question mark (?) or exclamation point (!), use that mark instead of the colon. If there are multiple bootleg titles for the same concert (and no official release title), this field should be omitted.
If a live bootleg release is recorded in the Netherlands, put just "Netherlands" as the country as per the listing on the Release Country page.
*Event is the name of the festival (e.g. Lollapalooza, Woodstock, etc.) or TV/radio program (e.g. Saturday Night Live, Grammy Awards), which may be included if applicable, particularly if the event/program name is more significant than the venue. It should not be used for tour names or generic event descriptions such as "in-store event"- this information should go in the annotation.

*Venue is the name of the location (hotel, hall, stadium, etc.) where the concert took place. This may be blank if unknown, if the location doesn't have a name (such as some festival sites), or if the event name by itself is unambiguous.
Rationale
* City can be the city, town or village where the concert was held.

* State may be referred to as province, prefecture, etc. depending on the country, and should be included where commonly used (e.g. USA, Canada), or when needed to distinguish between cities of the same name in the same country (e.g. Sakura, Chiba, Japan vs Sakura, Tochigi, Japan, or Perth, TAS, Australia vs Perth, WA, Australia).
In a lot of cases the most important information for live bootlegs is the date and location when the concert took place. Hiding this information for bootlegs where the person who compiled the release added a title means that it is harder to find a special recording of a live session, because live bootlegs often don't have a release date. Adding the venue is useful for finding all concerts an artist performed in one city over the years or all concerts that took place in a special location by using the search interface.
* Country is the country.

Initial Discussion

JIRA ticket STYLE-228

Application

This guideline applies to live releases, release groups, and recordings.

Guidelines

Titles for live entities should generally follow the normal style guidelines, with the below exceptions.

Releases

Releases with a title, such as most live CDs, should use their own title per the general titles guide. Live releases without titles, such as audience recordings and untitled official live releases, should follow the Release Group rules below for the release title.

Release Groups

Grouping

Multiple live releases of the same concert should be grouped in the same Release Group. For example:

Titling

Live Release Groups, and untitled live Releases, should be named by concatenating the date and location, including as much information as is known and appropriate, following the format below.

Syntax: "YYYY-MM-DD: [Title: ][Event, ][Venue, ]City, [State, ]Country".

 • YYYY-MM-DD is the date, formatted year-month-day. Month and day should be zero-padded, e.g. 2001-05-07 for May 7, 2001. If the month and/or day are unknown, they may be omitted (e.g. 1975, 2003-08).
 • Title is included if the release group/concert contains either a single, unique release title, or an official, titled release. If there is an alternative dividing punctuation mark at the end of the title, such as the question mark (?) or exclamation point (!), use that mark instead of the colon. If there are multiple bootleg titles for the same concert (and no official release title), this field should be omitted.
 • Event is the name of the festival (e.g.
 • Venue is the name of the location (hotel, hall, stadium, etc.) where the concert took place. This may be blank if unknown, if the location doesn't have a name (such as some festival sites), or if the event name by itself is unambiguous.
 • City can be the city, town or village where the concert was held.
 • State may be referred to as province, prefecture, etc. depending on the country, and should be included where commonly used (e.g. USA, Canada), or when needed to distinguish between cities of the same name in the same country (e.g. Sakura, Chiba, Japan vs Sakura, Tochigi, Japan, or Perth, TAS, Australia vs Perth, WA, Australia).
 • Country is the country.

Examples:

Additional Notes

This guideline can be applied to release groups which feature a complete live session and additional bonus tracks (those can be live tracks from other concerts or studio recordings), e.g. 2002-05-02: Ahoy, Rotterdam, Netherlands. It does not apply to live compilations, which are releases that collect tracks from different live sessions.

Examples:

Recordings

For live recordings, enter the song name as the recording title and "live" as the recording disambiguation comment. If the date and/or location is known, this should also be added to the disambiguation comment following the same format as above, under Release Groups.
