Current Work Items for MusicBrainz Development

This page lists everything that is currently being worked on in MusicBrainzDevelopment.

• Please limit this to topics that are in progress. These could be FeaturesCurrentlyInDevelopment but also FeaturesThatNeedToBeDescribedInMoreDetail.
• As opposed to NewFeatureSuggestions, SuggestionsToCurrentFeatures, SmallNewFeatures and LargerNewFeatures which should be listed on FutureWork.
• And then when a feature has been implemented or dismissed, it should move to FinishedWork.
• We now also have a section DormantWork, for things that did not (yet) get implemented or are superceded by something else (e.g. SurvivalOfTheFittest might be superceded by suggestions in AlbumLockingDiscussion in the short run). But it would be stupid to delete SurvivalOfTheFittest from the Wiki. Who knows whether we might need it again in two years?

Please do not just add a link, instead use TextInsteadOfLists and describe the feature in two sentences. See also TurningYourIdeasIntoReality for how to do that. Please also put the newest entry on top and add date stamps to new entries as "current" is somewhat time-sensitive.

XMLWebService

• 2006-01:

• The old RDF web service is predates most web service systems and thus does not follow best practices. The granularity of the calls to the existing web service and the use of RDF restrict its usefulness. The XMLWebService will be based on XML and make use of the vast body of knowledge gathererd about web services in the last few years.

New data models

• 2005-11:

• DonRedman and Shepard started a collaborative brainstorming process on an ObjectModel and an AspectModel which try to find out what objects MusicBrainz has to deal with and what different aspects of the users expectations they represent. If this leads to an acceptable result, the NextGenerationSchema of the database can be derived from this and also a complete redesign of the website which takes into account the different aspects of the data.

Debian Server Package

• 2005-08:

• TimOlsen and MatthewExon are creating a DebianServerPackage that will automate the installation of a MusicBrainz server.

Next Generation Tagger and Lucene

• 2005-07:

• RobertKaye has taken up work on the PicardTagger again -- the next generation tagging application which will implement many of the MBTaggerImprovements. A new beta release is upcoming soon!

There was a first alpha release around 2004-10 in which Robert was playing with possibilities for adding full-text indexing search capabilities to the PicardTagger using PyLucene.

ArtistPageRedesign

• 2005-06:

• MatthiasFriedrich and G0llum have picked up the ArtistPageRedesign again. The W.I.P can be found on http://g0llum.dyndns.org/artistpageredesign/

Guess Case

• 2005-05:

• The GuessCase javascript function has been completely re-written. If you encounter any bugs, enter them on GuessCaseBugs

WikiDocs

• 2005-04:

• The documentation on the main site will be massively restructured using the WikiDocs. There is a first serious WikiDocsConcept. but there remain quite some details to be fleshed out.

• JohnCarter has written a script for WikiMigration that will port the wiki from UseMod to MoinMoin. This is the first step of the WikiDocsSchedule.
