The Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) is a universal number system for identifying products. It was developed by the GS1 (a merger of EAN International, Uniform Code Council (UCC, the guys behind the UPCs) and Electronic Commerce Council of Canada (ECCC)) to have a general term for the numbers like EAN and UPC which appear as BarCodes on products all over the world.

MusicBrainz allows to store GTINs with ReleaseEvents, called barcode there. Before that was possible, they were commonly put in ReleaseAnnotations, using the unofficial ReleaseAnnotationStyle.
