Description

The label comment is a field in the database used to help distinguish labels with identical names or LabelCode. It's structurally identical, and has the same purpose as the artist comment field.

The label comment will appear in the search results next to each name: the comment should be kept fairly short. A few words is normally enough, just enough that someone reading it will recognize the Label they're looking for. The label comment field is not a place to store general background information: that kind of information should go in the LabelAnnotation.

You will be prompted to enter a comment any time you enter a new Label which shares its name with an existing Label, but you'll not be prompted to enter a comment for the "old" one. To enhance the search results, you should ideally provide a comment for the old Label as well, by editing it on its EditLabelPage.

Editing trick

The comment field only appears if there are two labels with the same name. But sometimes, it might be useful to add a comment to a label, though there is no other identically named label. There is an easy trick to achieve this in one edit:

  • Start to edit the label name, and change the label name to an existing label name.
  • The server will notice the existing label has the same name, and will providing the comment field (and a confirmation checkbox to make sure you know what you're doing).
  • Now you can enter the label comment, and change the label name back to its original, correct name; even though now the names aren't identical, the server will still record the comment when you click Submit. That's it!
