A Release Annotation is user contributed text attached to a specific [[Release]].
<small>[[Release]] | [[Annotation]] > Release annotation </small>

==Overview==
This allows information about that particular release, its additional information and the tracks on it to be explained in further detail.

A '''Release annotation''' is user contributed text attached to a specific release entry.
The content of a Release Annotation can be edited by any [[MusicBrainz]] user. Like the rest of the database, if something is incorrect or incomplete you can fix it. All changes are recorded and if someone deletes or defaces the Annotation, you can easily restore a previous copy.

<small>{i} You may consult either the [[Annotation]] or [[Release]] page for general informations about them. </small>

The Release Annotation can hold information about a release that does not fit into the fields of the database, or which is not allowed to be in the [[Release Title|ReleaseTitle]] or Tracktitles according to the [[Official Style Guideline|OfficialStyleGuideline]]<code><nowiki></nowiki></code>s. For example:
* There are tracks that are 'bonus tracks'.
* Whether a release was a vinyl or cassette release (and furthermore, where the sides went, A, B, etc.)
* Additional information about a release, links and alternative names for the release or tracks, etc.

Overview

A Release annotation is user contributed text attached to a specific release entry.

{i} You may consult either the Annotation or Release page for general informations about them.

Release annotation content

Idea.png A release annotation may hold any information about a release that does not fit into the fields of the database, or which is not allowed to be in the ReleaseTitle or TrackTitles according to the OfficialStyleGuidelines. The following uses are suggested:

  • Checkmark.png Trivia: sells, awards...
  • Checkmark.png Historical facts related to the conditions or recording and/or production of the release
  • Checkmark.png Disambiguation: notes that help differentiate this release from another (possibly identically named different release, or different edition), indications about bonus tracks...
  • Checkmark.png Miscellaneous editing warnings or informations: notes specifically warning users about some uncommon aspect of the release, that shouldn't be changed (capitalization, spelling, ...)
  • Checkmark.png Additional comment about the state of the informations: things to fix, to research
  • Checkmark.png Alternate release title or other edition indications
  • Checkmark.png Data that can't fit in the fields of the database, but should, due to a current technical limitation
  • Checkmark.png This list is not exhaustive: you may use a label annotation for pretty much anything you can think of - as long as it matches the purpose of Annotations, and relates to the release entry to which it's attached.

{X} You mustn't add copyrighted content copied from other resources, be they online or printed. More generally, you really shouldn't copy/paste any kind of content, unless it's purely factual.

Release annotation style

For translated/transliterated releases, the following wording is suggested:

  • For the original release use:
  • "Please do not change the capitalization of this release, it is exactly the way it should be as this is a japanese release, for the transliterated [resp. translated] version go here [link]. These releases must not be merged."
  • For the transliterated/translated version:
  • "This is a transliterated [resp. translated] version of [link to original]. These releases must not be merged."

Release annotation (glorious) history

Prior to the introduction of the label system in MusicBrainz, release annotations were used extensively by brave moderators (the former name of editors) to store release data, possibly thanks to TeleGUISE's head-bashing, errrrr suggestions. This led to several revisions of the not-really-followed-but-could-have-been-official, Shepard's turbulent child: ReleaseAnnotationStyle, and a lot of nitpicking to decide if we were to use "cat #:", "catalog #:", "catalogue #:", and other super-duper important style reflexions, like whether or not we should use bold and italics wiki formatting...

While mainly of historical interest, you should read this document for self-edification, or for some interesting thoughts about how different editions relate to each other and how this pertains (or not) to NadelnderBambus.

For the record, here is such a piece-of-old-school annotation:

  • Label: Rhino/Atlantic - EAN: 0 8122-72398-2 4 - ID: qAP3jE5wr0pPd0iMj4Tof.SiHG8- - ASIN: B000026GV5 - Rel: 1998 FR - Note: Red stripe on left border, part of the Atlantic Original Sound collection
  • Label: Atlantic? - Catalog #: AMCY-1171 - ASIN: B0000089IS - Rel: 1998 JP - Note: 20kbit Japanese limited edition
