History:Cover Art Sites/8 Bit Peoples

From MusicBrainz Wiki
Status: This Page is Glorious History!

The content of this page either is bit-rotted, or has lost its reason to exist due to some new features having been implemented in MusicBrainz, or maybe just described something that never made it in (or made it in a different way), or possibly is meant to store information and memories about our Glorious Past. We still keep this page to honor the brave editors who, during the prehistoric times (prehistoric for you, newcomer!), struggled hard to build a better present and dreamed of an even better future. We also keep it for archival purposes because possibly it still contains crazy thoughts and ideas that may be reused someday. If you're not into looking at either the past or the future, you should just disregard entirely this page content and look for an up to date documentation page elsewhere.

On 2007-09-21 I sent the following email to the admins of 8BitPeoples:

I "work" (in my free time) at a open music database called MusicBrainz. The goal of MusicBrainz is to be a incredibly accurate and complete music database, a main goal being music identification with audio finger prints and file tagging and metadata storage.

The reason I am sending you this mail is to ask if it would be alright to link to the cover art for any 8BP releases on your web page.
A current example, linked to CDBaby, can be seen here:
http://musicbrainz.org/release/76d2db0d-4fae-4279-99e7-62d4f47ade45.html

For an example with 8BP, an editor at MusicBrainz would go to, for instance, Anamanaguchi's "Power Supply":
http://musicbrainz.org/release/005bc8e2-295a-4499-ad97-a1f83099cbe4.html

and "relate" it to the cover art on your site:

Then, if a user were to click on the image, it would take you to:
http://www.8bitpeoples.com/discography_gfx.php?artist=Anamanaguchi#8BP065
showing the 8BP page for the album.

The image would show as a small, 130x130 (I believe) image on our page.
I am a big fan of what you are doing and would be delighted if 8BP was to give us permission to use their cover art on our site.
Thanks for your time!

And on 2007-10-2 I received the following response, granting permission and giving guidelines:

Hi Sen,

Thanks a lot for your interest. I would be totally happy to give you
guys permission to pull the 8bp album art from 8bitpeoples.com

I've set up this directory of images for you to use specifically:
http://www.8bitpeoples.com/_images/discog/front/

Please relate it to images in this new "front" directory, and not the
ones located in the "jewel" or "printable" subdirectories of "discog"

Also, when clicking an image, please have it take the user to:

http://www.8bitpeoples.com/discography_gfx.php#8BP000

where 000 is the appropriate catalog number. Please do not issue the
"?artist=" query to filter the discography.

Thanks very much. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Obviously this may take some extra work to get it implemented as such. I will be in contact with ruaok or another programmer to get this taken care of. --SenRepus

  • That directory on their site hasn't been updated for new art since 2007-10-02, and I notice some releases, namely this one, this one, this one, this one, and this one are not included. Any indications as to how we are to add these? -- BrianSchweitzer 04:57, 01 January 2008 (UTC)
    • One might also note that this was not handled properly due to Ru not understanding me when I tried to explain it. I think it best to scrap this entirely, seeing that our DB isnt supporting it and that Nullsleep and 8BP did not provide us with what is needed to keep this working for us. --SenRepus
