My project to clean up everything related to Frank Sinatra. Documenting progress, research and what not here as I'm very familiar with wikis and it allows others to see and collaborate.

Phase 1: Recording duplications

The first stage is to clean up the mess that is recordings. There are over 11,000 recordings in MusicBrainz for Frank at the moment, which contains an awful lot of duplications.

Quick estimates say there should be around:

  • 2,000 studio recordings - closer to 2,500 if we include the remasters people have entered and edits
  • 200 radio recordings - More in circulation, but from experience most releases only stick to a select group so most are probably not in the database yet
  • 50 television recordings - More exist, but not many make it on CD so I doubt more than this are in the database
  • 500 concert recordings - Much more in circulation, but unless there's a lot of bootleg releases in the database which I haven't noticed I doubt we have instances of them on MusicBrainz yet

So this number of recordings should be much smaller.

The first phase is to go through these recordings and match like-recordings together. All individual recordings will also receive disambiguation comments which allow easy identification. For example:

  • original studio master
  • 1957 original studio master - if recorded more than once
  • "The Capitol Years" remaster
  • alternate take
  • June 9, 1957 live recording
  • February 23, 1944 radio recording

A master list of song titles and their recordings in the database can be found at User:Cook879/Sinatra/Recordings

Phase 2: Recording data

Phase 2 is to give these recordings more information, including relating to works, arrangers, conductors, musicians and recording date

Phase 3: Releases

Phase 3 is the hardest one, which is adding releases.
