History:Next Generation Schema/Track Relationships Conversion
Primer
This page describes the automatic conversions that will take place for ARs on update to NGS. This only applies to these updates – some of these may also end up having other acceptable entity pairings for new relationships created after NGS; that's not to be covered here. The last section is an initial list of Work-Work ARs to be created, some of them to replace/correct ARs in the preceding lists.
The goal at this time is to resolve any outstanding issues that remain.

Compilation Relationship Type | Track-Track | Recording-Recording | Designates that a single entity (i.e. not more than one recording/work) draws from multiple entities. Thus: a specific Recording from several Recordings; it won't be Works in this case, because that would be a Medley (at least for conversion to NGS). In converting data, will be converted to a Recording-Recording AR, since Work-Work is more likely to be Medley. |
Cover Relationship Type | Track-Track | Recording-Recording | See discussion below |
DJ Mix Relationship Type | Track-Track | Recording-Recording
Earliest Release Relationship Type | Track-Track | Recording-Recording | Deprecated AR Type: such recordings should be merged (an automatic merge is attempted during NGS conversion) |
Karaoke Relationship Type | Track-Track | Recording-Recording
Mash-up Relationship Type | Track-Track | Recording-Recording
Medley Relationship Type | Track-Track | Work-Work | See discussion below |
Other Version Relationship Type | Track-Track | Work-Work | Should now just mean "same Work"; should be merged - deprecated. Many of these situations will need to make new Work-Work ARs (see section below)
Note: merge should be manual, not automatic during NGS conversion because this AR type is a bit fuzzy. |
Remaster Relationship Type | Track-Track | Recording-Recording
Remix Relationship Type | Track-Track | Recording-Recording
Samples Relationship Type | Track-Track | Recording-Recording | Sampling refers to actual audio data, hence recording for the source. The choice of specific recording to sample from wouldn't change the work (i.e. two Recordings which each sample a different Recording could still be the same Work; hence Recording for the sampling entity. |
Cover Relationship Type Discussion
I don't really agree with Cover Relationship Type being kept as recording-recording. I would rather see it as a recording-work or work-work (depending of our final decision about the nature of a work). Murdos 23:11, 30 August 2010 (UTC)
Medley Relationship Type Discussion
Medley requires a new performance, according to Mix Terminology, so the audio data is not the same -- hence should be Work-level.
- Ok, but do we consider that a medley is a new work? If we don't, this AR can become a Recording-Work AR linking the medley recording to each performed Work. Murdos 22:37, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
- That bit confused me in the chat, someone mentioned that medleys are performances of existing works, but then decided that a work-work relationship makes more sense. I wouldn't personally consider the ones I've heard as new works, so a recording-work relationship would make sense to me. --Nikki 11:27, 26 August 2010 (UTC)
- For some reason I didn't go over that option in my head -- perhaps there was a reason for this that I've forgotten, but it seems to me that you're right and this should be Recording-Work, differentiating it from Compilation isamuch as Compilation is Recording-Recording. --Ianmcorvidae 18:08, 26 August 2010 (UTC)
- Most of the time when I hear of a medley, it's a new arrangement of the incorporated songs, e.g. a Piano medley of pop songs, or like Power of Flower / あしたのわたし / Steppin' / 100点満点なんかじゃない!, an orchestral arrangement. In particular, the songs are often transposed into matching key and have bridges added between sections. I would consider this to be a new work (in most cases). --Kepstin 19:25, 27 August 2010 (UTC)
- Some interesting cases to consider:
- In traditional (Irish, New England, etc.) folk music, medleys are closer to the rule than the exception. The level of creative thought applied to the arranging can range from "Hey, let's play this tune, then that one" (typical of jam sessions, e.g., which could be recorded) to the truly masterful (e.g. Melting) where how the tunes are combined is more integral to the piece than any individual tune.
- Kumikyoku Nico Nico Douga (not in MB) is a medley which has been covered at least 100 times (see http://kumikyoku.rintaun.net/). These covers are very specifically covers of the medley as a unit, not simply other people playing the same set of songs, and indicate that people see the medley as an independent composition.
- In my opinion, then, medleys run the spectrum from mostly just a recording to clearly a new work. Rather than try to find a place in the spectrum to draw the line, it's less ambiguous to call them all new works. --Dolphinling 05:04, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

Re-arranged version | For a re-arranged version of the same Work. See http://test.musicbrainz.org/work/5aab016c-f3e8-48aa-86e0-abd221c7b501/relationships versus http://test.musicbrainz.org/work/5aaff0c1-73d0-4593-9e14-dacb925c6532/relationships for our example of this |
The other example I thought of in the chat of other version being used where the works wouldn't be merged was translated versions, e.g. http://test.musicbrainz.org/work/d96b100b-86bd-4e6c-a950-5283be973d7e/relationships and http://test.musicbrainz.org/work/028d72eb-3c52-4683-a5c6-932663245c58/relationships --Nikki 11:27, 26 August 2010 (UTC)
