Matthias still studies computer science in Munich, Germany. He doesn't play any instrument and tries to compensate this with his music collection. His interests are broad and include german hiphop, swing, straight rock, sophisticated pop and some obscurities you don't want to be bothered with. He doesn't play any important role in the MusicBrainz community. To set it straight: He's a bloody noob.

Good to know

  • This is great but not advertised on the MusicBrainz webpage.
  • Fight the spelling balcanization!
  • With a little help from my friends ... la la la

Open questions:

  • What to do if a release is in the database but with a different title?
  • This did apply to two of my Djang Reinhardt discs and to some of my cheap samplers.
    • First verify that the other title is not bogus and really correspond to an existing alternative edition. If it does, you'll have to decide on a case by case basis if it's worth creating another identical release (but the title). Some discussion about this is found at the bottom of the Jazz page. -- dmppanda 17:20, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
  • How do I handle a mixed single artist/various artists disc?
  • Examples: The last track of The Police - Reunion Concert 1986 is performed by The Amnesty Allstars. Tracks 5-12 of The Willy DeVille Acoustic Trio - In Berlin (2) are performed by Mink DeVille.
    • Not too sure I've an answer for the generic case, but in some cases, if appropriate, just click on the "Show Artists" link (on the "Edit" line) on the release page, and change the performer for one track or two ;) -- dmppanda 22:11, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
  • How can edits be protected?
  • Sometimes the spelling is special, some annotations are non-trivial. Is there a way to subscribe to releases instead of artists?
    • At that time, there's only two ways to "protect" stuff: (a) write a big fat warning in the release annotation and/or (b) subscribe to the artists, and vote/watch the changes. Now, there's some discussion on a "new" system for locking: ReleaseLocking and ReleaseLockingDiscussion -- dmppanda 22:11, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
  • Is there a better way to handle collaborations?
  • Currently the database contains a lot of entries of the form Artist A & Artist B. There must be a better world somewhere.
    • Right now, no there isn't :D. I guess you might want to read NextGenerationSchema (sort of a MusicBrainz Next Gen), and if this point is not already covered there, bring up the issue. -- dmppanda 22:11, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
  • When does an artist feature a track, resulting in (feat. artist)?
  • Obvious case: The track listing says: 'title (feat. artist)'. But how to tell apart the feature-style from the collaboration style? Is Tom Jones on the Reload album featured by the other artists or is it a various artists release by Tom Jones and ...? And when is an artist important enough to be mentioned as a featuring artist? Ash Sood is mentioned as guest on tracks 1, 7, and 14 of Sheryl Crows album Live From Central Park. Ray Charles sings on Track 5 of the album Victim of Love by Dee Dee Bridgewater.
  • Oh my, Big Joe ...
