Status: This is an official style guideline. |
Dutch is spoken in the Netherlands (Nederland) and Flanders (Vlaanderen), which is the northern part of Belgium (België). Frisian is spoken in Friesland, a province of the Netherlands.
Bijvoorbeeld Een blauwe maandag of Regen in november.
In English
Capitalize only the first word of a title, and additionally names of people, cities, countries, etc. The rest of the title should be in lower case. Use normal Dutch capitalization rules for the rest of the title.
Exceptions:
- a title that starts with a contraction apostrophe. In this case, only the second word is capitalized. e.g. 'n Beetje verliefd
- a title starts with a number. In this case if the first letter is not the name of a person, city, country etc. than no capitalization is applied. e.g. 15 milioen mensen
Names of days and months are written without capitalization. For example Een blauwe maandag or Regen in november.
Beware: the string IJ is considered one letter. When a title or names of people, cities, countries, etc. start with this string both letters need to be capitalized. e.g. Op de sluizen van IJmuiden
Names of artists follow capitalization as seen on their releases. Only if there is no one clear style for the artist name than they follow normal Dutch spelling conventions, meaning that nouns, preposition and articles other that the first word are spelled lower case. A name not consisting of a normal Dutch word is still upper case.
