The People Behind MusicBrainz


The following are short biographies of some of the people behind MusicBrainz. There are developers who write the software for the web site and client applications, system administrators who keep the servers running, style editors who edit the style guidelines, and editors who add to and improve the accuracy of the data itself, but all of them contribute their efforts to help make MusicBrainz work better for everyone.

Robert is the founder and lead developer for MusicBrainz, and President and Executive Director of the MetaBrainz Foundation, the non-profit organization that pays the bills for MusicBrainz. Read more...

Dave is the primary maintainer of the MusicBrainz servers (stats) and makes sure that they run smoothly. Since Q4/2005, he stepped down from the position of the server main developer, but continues to make major contributions to the MusicBrainz service. Read more...

Christoph, better known to brainzers as DonRedman, is MusicBrainz' resident expert on social issues and organizational development. He has contributed a lot of work to the MusicBrainz Wiki, and to the WikiDocs project. He is also currently the secretary of the StyleCouncil. Though he is not doing much there, having helped the Council to somehow kind of run by itself (finally!). Read more...

Matthias Friedrich has worked on several of the MusicBrainz subprojects. His latest contributions include the design of the new REST-based web service (which rendered his position as the local RDF and Semantic Web guru obsolete) as well as the official python client library, PythonMusicBrainz2. Alex organized the MusicBrainz StyleCouncil, responsible for editing the style guidelines used by editors when entering and updating the data in MusicBrainz. He led an effort to correct the many foreign language entries that were misencoded, and largely as a result is one of our top editors. Although there is no official top-20 list for this, Alex is the editor with the most subscribed artists (> 2100) (the vast majority being InternationalArtists). Read more...

The MusicBrainz Community

MusicBrainz wouldn't be the same without its user community. See the top editors list for a list of people who've contributed the most number of edits. Most of these users are AutoEditors, too. Of course, this is not the only way, others who contributed less edits may have shared their knowledge about specific artists in the database, or helped building the community, etc. Quite a number of users who have made contributions to the wiki have created their own Wiki page. See a list the pages which have the, and if you haven't created one of your own, don't hesitate to do so...

Stefan Kestenholz (Keschte, or g0llum before 05/2006), was one of the major contributors to the MusicBrainz Server, and has found his way from improving the JavaScript parts of the server (He is the one responsible for the GuessCase script, and the EditSuite) to create new features of the mb_server.   • .. Since 2000, when MusicBrainz was created, lots of people came, and left the project again. Therefore, the list of people which were mentioned on previous versions of this page was moved to MusicBrainzContributors. Since it is impossible to keep this list up-to-date, we don't even try...
